Alondra created a children's book, lesson plan, and activity to promote adopting animals from shelters instead of buying from breeders. She wrote and illustrated a book about a boy who wants to adopt from a shelter. She then developed a lesson plan and matching game to accompany the book. To complete the project, Alondra kept a log of over 15 hours spent developing the products. Creating the digital portfolio and ensuring all elements worked together was challenging but provided learning experiences in website design and project organization. The e-portfolio contains all documentation of her work.

The Goal The first thing that comes to mind when thinki.docxrtodd194
The Goal
The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the word
“goal” to me is a soccer game. I was born in San Salvador, El Salvador and the
National sport there is soccer or as we say in Spanish is “Futbol. The point of
the game is to score a goal or more goals than your opponent. The interesting
thing about this is that as I can see the game has a purpose, because is not
just to kick the ball around and have fun, but to score goals and win the game.
It is the same concept when managing a successful business, the business
needs to have a clear goal to succeed.
The first thing I learned from reading the Goal, is that many
companies don’t have the proper business analytics that helps them get
results. Starting from chapter one Alex’s plant was disorganized, they really
had things confused by believing some robots that manufacture items faster
would help them produce more, first by being more efficient and second by
maximizing throughput. This is what happens with many of us even in the
smallest of assignments, we focus on things that are not really the goal, and
this in consequence makes the finish product delayed to the point it feels like
it never comes. For example, I am going to school to finish my bachelor’s
degree, along the way there are many classes I must take. My goal is not
really to pass every class with an A letter grade, even though this is a great
accomplishment.
My goal is to graduate but if I focus on getting a A letter grade on each
class I would probably feel unaccomplished if this didn’t happen or maybe I
would take the class again to make sure I get the grade I want. All in all, this
would make obtaining my bachelor’s degree a longer process. Now going
back to the plant, the reason I say Alex’s plant did not have the proper
business analytics is because Alex had a lot of inventories, a lot of expenses
and low sales. The Plant was very efficient in a sense that people and
machine were producing a certain part to the component and not the whole
product. That is why efficiency can’t be measured by the number of parts that
are produced but by the sale of the whole component meaning throughput.
The second thing I learned from reading the goal was the insight that
Jonah provides to Alex, which shows how educated Jonah is in dealing with
this type of plant. Jonah had a set of measurements that would let him know
right of the bat the issue without even actually physically being at the plant.
The insight I am talking about are the dependent events and statistical
fluctuations. When Alex was at the hike with the boys he found the
dependent events and statistical fluctuations on the line. I personally found
this very interesting because as a General Manager or a CEO I would have to
have critical thinking to find these issues in my operations.
It made me realize that this is something I must possess to be a
successful leader one day, be.

At the 10/15/2014 Parent Ed talk, Principal Heather Swanson Johnson gave a fascinating presentation about Catharine Blaine's Writer's Workshop. Her talk reminded me how fortunate we are to have passionate educators like her and Ms. Lily in our children's lives.
Even if you missed Heather's dynamic delivery of this PPT, you'll see her main takeaways from her talk about Writer's Workshop. Hope to see you at the next Parent Ed night!

Graduation Project Product Reflection
1. Explain how the product is an appropriate outgrowth or extension of the issue- based topic.
My junior year I wrote a paper on the treatment of animals in animal shelters. The following
year I chose to write a children’s book and make an activity and lesson plan to go along with
my book. My book was about a young boy who noticed his friend had gotten a really great dog
from the local animal shelter, so he goes home and asks him mom if they could get a dog too.
His mom is quick to say that she knows of a breeder, but the boy says he wants one from the
shelter instead. I did that in hopes to promote and encourage kids to adopt animals from a
shelter instead of getting one from a breeder, cause as I learned in my research paper there are
millions of homeless dogs.
2. Explain the steps required to develop and complete the final product.
The first thing I had to do in completing my product was to write and illustrate a children’s
book that went along with my research paper. After finishing my book, I then had to come up
with a lesson plan for the class I would be teaching. I had to include things such as objectives
and activities. Later I came up with a little matching game that would further add on to the end
of my book. I left off with the mother and son going to the pet shop, so the game is about ‘what
are some things they should get from the pet store and what are some things they should not
get or stay away from’. Finally I made a story worksheet. When given the worksheet the
children will think of another alternate ending to the story I read previously and then draw a
picture of their story.
3. Describe what evidence is available to show 15 or more hours completed.
To show my 15 completed hours I was given a mentor log and filled it out every day that I
worked on the graduation project. In the log I described what I did that day to be granted my
hours and also what I was planning on doing the next day.
4. Explain the learning stretch.
This senior project has many different learning stretches. One of them is becoming a teacher for
the duration of the project, for example making a lesson plan activity and worksheet was a little
harder than it looks. I had to make sure they would all go together and follow the book I’m
going to read. I also had to make sure it wasn’t too difficult for 2nd graders but not too easy
either. Another lesson is making the yola website. I’ve never really made a website before and it
is a lot of pressure knowing this is my portfolio for my senior project. Making sure this website
is perfect and professional, was a big learning stretch. Also I pretty much learned how to
become a wiz at making websites.

5. Demonstrate the application of knowledge, and explain the use of problem solving.
Problem solving came up a lot during the product development. Mostly though, while making
my e-portfolio I ran into the most problems. This year our portfolio for our product is online, so
we had to make everything digital. It seems easy enough but sometimes electronics do not like
to cooperate with you. It was most difficult to make sure everything was perfect and trying to
incorporate it all together to make it run smoothly. For example trying to but the children’s
book I made onto the website was a challenge. It wouldn’t just go on there so I had to make a
screencast of it and record myself reading it so we could put it on the e-portfolio. Also having to
rearrange everything in an acceptable manner, so it would look professional and presentable,
was hard.
6. Describe what documentation is available to provide evidence.
Well, my document of evidence is pretty much my e-portfolio I made online. It consists of
everything I have done for my project, my product, my junior paper, and a lot of writings. It’s
like my graduation project bible.
