Analytical methods can vary in nature from detailed regulatory methods to more summary in nature. Regulatory method documents can include details of analytes which can be studied, supported matrices, reagents, methodological details, statistical performance, interlaboratory validation and other details. Summary methods provide a general overview of reagents, instrumentation and commonly a short list of analytes. Regulatory bodies including the US Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), US Geological Survey (USGS), US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and others provide detailed analytical methods and collections of summary methods from the agrochemical industry, such as the US-EPA Environmental Chemistry Methods (https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-analytical-methods/environmental-chemistry-methods-ecm). Instrument vendors also provide access to many hundreds of application notes which can be considered as summary methods. We have developed a cheminformatically enabled database of methods whereby chemicals have been extracted from the methods, with the identifiers (names and/or chemical abstracts registry numbers) mapped to chemical structures. The resulting database of almost 3000 methods can be searched by chemical name, CASRN, structure and similarity of chemical structure. The resulting database has been integrated into a web-based application and includes integration to public domain mass spectral data and filtering of the methods based on analyte, chemical class, method source and other related metadata. This abstract does not necessarily represent the views or policies of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
ChemSpider is one of the internet’s primary resources for chemists. ChemSpider is a structure-centric platform and hosts over 26 million unique chemical entities sourced from over 400 different data sources and delivers information including commercial availability, associated publications, patents, analytical data, experimental and predicted properties. ChemSpider serves a rather unique role to the community in that any chemist has the ability to deposit, curate and annotate data. In this manner they can contribute their skills, and data, to any chemist using the system. A number of parallel projects have been developed from the initial platform including ChemSpider SyntheticPages, a community generated database of reaction syntheses, and the Learn Chemistry wiki, an educational wiki for secondary school students.
This presentation will provide an overview of the project in terms of our success in engaging scientists to contribute to crowdsouring chemistry. We will also discuss some of our plans to encourage future participation and engagement in this and related projects.

Diversity and Depth: Implementing AI across many long tail domainsPaul Groth
Presentation at the IJCAI 2018 Industry Day
Elsevier serves researchers, doctors, and nurses. They have come to expect the same AI based services that they use in everyday life in their work environment, e.g.: recommendations, answer driven search, and summarized information. However, providing these sorts of services over the plethora of low resource domains that characterize science and medicine is a challenging proposition. (For example, most of the shelf NLP components are trained on newspaper corpora and exhibit much worse performance on scientific text). Furthermore, the level of precision expected in these domains is quite high. In this talk, we overview our efforts to overcome this challenge through the application of four techniques: 1) unsupervised learning; 2) leveraging of highly skilled but low volume expert annotators; 2) designing annotation tasks for non-experts in expert domains; and 4) transfer learning. We conclude with a series of open issues for the AI community stemming from our experience.

The purpose of this chart is to provide some general information about several top point-of-care resources in the medical field. This information should not be considered complete. I do not endorse any particular POC resources. The information gathered here by a literature review. Those articles published by medical expert which used bibliometric analysis are included. The articles which their methodology were solely based on user-centred analysis (i.e. medical community survey about the popularity of particular tools) are excluded to minimize risk of bias. If information about particular aspect of a POC was not obtained from the literature review, the editorial policy from their perspective website was cited. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

13. Abstract
" A promising strategy for drug abuse treatment is to accelerate the drug
metabolism by administration of a drug-metabolizing enzyme. The
question is how effectively an enzyme can actually prevent the drug from
entering brain and producing physiological effects. In the present study,
we have developed a pharmacokinetic model through a combined use of in
vitro kinetic parameters and positron emission tomography data in human
to examine the effects of a cocaine-metabolizing enzyme in plasma on the
time course of cocaine in plasma and brain of human. …It has been
demonstrated that administration of a cocaine hydrolase/esterase
(CocH/CocE) can considerably decrease the cocaine half-lives in both brain
and plasma, ….The estimated maximum cocaine plasma concentration
which a given concentration of drug-metabolizing enzyme can effectively
prevent from entering brain and producing physiological effects can be
used to guide future preclinical/clinical studies on cocaine-metabolizing
enzymes. ….”

19. Synonyms, related terms, variant
spellings, truncation and wildcards
When designing a search strategy, in order to be as
comprehensive as possible, it is necessary to
include a wide range of keyword terms for each of
the concepts selected. For example:
synonyms:
related terms:
variant spellings:
truncation and wildcards:
truncation: random* (for random or randomised
or randomized or randomly, etc); and
wildcard: behavio?r (for behaviour or behavior).
21. Databases
• Search syntax varies across interfaces.
• Subject heading varies across databases.
– Subject heading = MeSH= Descriptors = Control
vocabulary = ...
• Search strategy has to be tailored for each database.
– *Tip: For further details refer to the “Help” files
for the database in question.
Developing a search strategy is an iterative process!
