Governor Glenda?
So all this back and forth lately
between Mike Pence, Glenda Ritz and
the State Board of Education has
some folks in the Glenda camp really
thinking that she should drop her
plans to run for re-election and
instead go straight for Governor in
2016 and take on the incumbent. And
Glenda is helping fuel the speculation.
We are not making this up.
From what TCS hears there is not a lot
of enthusiasm amongst Democrats
about a possible primary fight
between former Speaker John Gregg
and former Congressman Baron Hill.
And in an interview last night on the
“Just Let Me Teach” program on the
Indiana Talks network, Ritz said that
while she was running for re-election
as SPI, circumstances could change
that and she might run for Governor in
2016.
Yep, she sure did.

Now if she did run, the Democrats
would have some challenges. TCS has
told you that the last few polls we’ve
seen have Pence polling north of 60
percent and even a poll done by ISTA
back in November had 50 percent of
Hoosiers thinking the state was going
in the right direction. We also hear
that there’s a poll out there that has
Glenda’s favorable ratings under 30
percent, mostly because most people
don’t know her or have an opinion of
her, despite all the recent news about
ISTEP testing and SBOE dysfunction.
And TCS also hears in Democratic
circles, that there is still a rift between
Ritz and some of the party
establishment. One prominent
Democrat told TCS she would be a
worse candidate than Jill Long
Thompson. Ouch!!! The only way this
dynamic could change was that if
Hilary Clinton did well in Indiana and
that lifted all boats and Glenda was
part of that wave. However, Clinton
isn’t expected to have more than a
token operation in Indiana.
And then there’s the ISTA factor. The
teachers union did not have the best
track record in the last election.
We’re still looking through their
campaign finance reports trying to find
out where the wins were; there were
not a lot of them. And also keep in
mind Ritz did not have a lot of
coattails in the last election either; we
think her record was worse than the
Chicago Cubs. By the way, their
political action committee, I-PACE,

reported having half a million dollars
in the bank according to their last
campaign finance report. Pence was
sitting on $3.5 million.
And yes, Glenda did get more votes
than Pence in 2012, but remember,
Pence had a 3-way race and the
albatross of Richard Mourdock hanging
over his head and not responding fast
enough to Mourdock’s rape remarks
which made his poll numbers start to
fall at the end of the campaign.
It will be definitely interesting to see
how this all breaks out in the next few
months. Enjoy your day.
