In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. тАЬLinguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,тАЭ they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Doden and Downtown Indy
Eric Doden's campaign for Governor
is off to somewhat of a rocky start. On
Monday, he announced a plan to
"revitalize and secure" Downtown
Indianapolis: send Indiana State Police
to secure the area, establish a
Prosecutor Review Board, and create a
state-operated Capital Zone to take
responsibility for infrastructure.
News that Doden planned to use
statewide resources to fund new
infrastructure for Downtown Indy was
met with immediate backlash from
Republicans outside of the Indy
bubble. We don't expect Republicans
in South Bend, New Albany, Terre
Haute, and Evansville to get excited
about using their tax dollars for
Doden's Indy-focused policy.
However, we spoke to Doden in an
interview that will run on Indy Politics
this weekend. He told us that
lawmakers should not be concerned
and that there is plenty of money in the
budget to accomplish his goals for
Indianapolis. Stay tuned on this one.

A Few Other Items Worth
Mentioning
ThereтАЩs an issue with the State of
Indiana/City of Indianapolis
"squabble" over no-turn-on-red
legislation, which the State banned the
council from doing. However, there's
a question as to whether the bill
applies to the entire city or just the
downtown area. If it applies to the
whole city, that could be a major issue
that will have to be fixed next session.
Todd Rokita is at it again, this time on
two fronts. HeтАЩs urging Governor Eric
Holcomb to send national guard
troops to help secure the border. Note
Rokita spent more than $2000 last year
on a "border" trip. The Governor's
office reportedly says, "Thanks, but no
thanks" There are already a couple of
dozen troops there. Also, we're
hearing that former Wayne Township
Trustee and "security" chief Andy
Harris was recently fired from the
office. The rumor is Rokita wanted to
attend a Lincoln Day dinner at the last

minute and wanted Harris to go with
him. Harris couldnтАЩt do it because of a
schedule conflict, so Rokita reportedly
fired him.
Diego Morales is at it again. There
are another couple of scandals out
there, we're told. One we're trying to
pin down. The other we heard was the
reported inappropriate firing of a staff
member, who, we are told, the Chief of
Staff had to call personally and hire
back. We hear the staff member got a
nice raise out of the deal.
Center Township Constable Denise
Paul Hatch will find out Monday
whether she will be held in contempt
of court for allegedly interfering with
an eviction. A hearing was held on
Thursday in Center Township small
claims court. WhatтАЩs interesting is
Judge Brenda Roper has been asked
to recuse herself because of a dispute
between the judge and the constable.
Hatch's attorney, Roberta Ross, says
there is a letter out there from Roper to
Hatch basically saying she would not
use Hatch for service of process and
court security, which is the function of
the township constable. And
therefore, Roper should have recused
herself. Once again, stay tuned.
тАЬConservative activistтАЭ, and we use
the term very loosely, Gabriel
Whitley is running for Congress
against Larry Buschon in the 8th
District. There are a couple of
interesting tidbits about this. First,
Whitley doesn't live in the District
anymore and lives in Indianapolis. He
moved here recently from Evansville.
We think it's odd, too, that he would
move a couple of hundred miles and is
now running for an office that he would
have to move back should he be lucky
(and we use that term loosely, too) to
win. Secondly, although he's alleged
to be a Republican, he sat in for a
Democrat at an Indianapolis Mayoral
forum earlier this year. And what was
even funnier about that one is that he

attacked Michelle Obama at a forum
hosted by a black female sorority.
You can draw your own conclusions.
Monday night Luke Messer was in
New Castle, featured guest at Clay
Morgan's fundraiser for the Mayor of
New Castle. Looked to be well
attended. GOP is running a nearly full
slate of city candidates. They have
only had one Republican mayor since
the 1950s, but it's been learning much
more red in the past few cycles.
Republicans now hold both of the
County Council seats in the city.
TCS hears former Attorney General
Curtis Hill is considering getting into
the race for Governor.
Look for pastor and political activist
Micah Beckwith to announce a run
for Lt. Governor next month.
Former Marion Marion Mayor Wayne
Seybold is throwing his hat in the ring
to replace Ann Vermillion, who
announced after the session that she is
resigning.
Liz Dessauer, chief of staff for
Congresswoman Victoria Spartz, has
informed staff that she is leaving to
take a position with the Susanne
Crouch campaign.
