organisations for
popularsing science
z
 Popularization of science is nothing else than an Endeavour to image
scientific ideas in such a way that everyone can grasp the fundamental
concepts and have an idea what science in essence is of course no
one really knows what science is not even the scientists themselves .
 Philosopher trying to describe what the scientific method should be
found out that there is nothing like the one and only scientific approach.
 The impossibility to give as distinct and unique definition follows.
Nevertheless ,the phenomenon ‘science and its results do exist.
 Although nobody can tell exactly what ‘science ‘is all about everyone
should have an idea anyway.
z
Government organisation for
popularising science
 Kishore Vaigyanik Protrahan Yojana (KYVP)
 Science Olympiad
 Science Olympiad foundation
 Shastra poshini scheme
 Talent search examination
z
 The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a
program started in 1999 by the Department of Science
and Technology (DST), Government of India.
 it encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences
to take up research career in Science.
 The aim of the program is to identify and encourage
talented and motivated students to pursue career in
research.
Kishore Vaigyanik protsahan yojana
(KVPY)
z
Aim
 to assist the students to realize their potential.
 Generous fellowship and contingency grant are
provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre
Ph.D. level.
 In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are
organized in prestigious research and educational
institutions in the country.
z
 Selection of the students is made from those studying
in XI standard to 1st year of any undergraduate
Program in Basic Sciences namely
B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology having
aptitude for scientific research.
 Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-
listed students are called for an interview which is the
final stage of the selection procedure.
 For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and
interview marks are considered.
 Generous fellowships are provided up to the pre-Ph.D.
level to the selected KVPY Fellows.
z Science Olympiad
 Science Olympiad is an American team competition in which students
compete in 23 events pertaining to various scientific disciplines, including
earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. .
 Over 7,800 middle school and high school teams from 50 U.S. states
compete each years.
 There are multiple levels of competition: invitational, regional, state, and
national.
 Invitational tournaments, run by high schools and universities, are unofficial
tournaments and serve as practice for regional and state competitions
 Teamss that excel at regional competitions advance to the state level
 onee or two teams from each state (depending on the state) then advance
the national level.
z
Divisions
 There are three divisions in the hierarchy of Science
Olympiad:
 Division A for elementary school (grades K-6)
 Division B for middle school (grades 6-9)
 Division C for high school (grades 9-12)
 However, the national tournament and generally state and
regional tournaments are only for divisions B and C.
z Science Olympiad Foundation
 The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is an educational
foundation and a nonprofit organisation, established in 1996,
based in New Delhi, India .
 which promotes science, mathematics, general knowledge,
introductory computer education and English language skills
among school children in India through various Olympiad
examinations.
 It helps students in their studies by providing a higher level of
education through their books, sample papers and olympiads.
z
 SOF organizes six olympiads each year, namely IEO, NSO, NCO, ICO,
IGKO and IMO.
 International General Knowledge Olympiad (IGKO)
 International English Olympiad (IEO)
 National Science Olympiad (NSO)
 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)
 International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO)
 National Cyber Olympiad (NCO)
z
SHASTRA POSHINI
 Sastraposhini is a scheme planned by the Kerala State Council for Science,
Technology and Environment for strengthening science education among the High
Schools of the State.
 This program plans strengthening of the High School science laboratories of the
State and an effective interaction among the students and teachers.
 Sastraposhini, a program envisaged by the Kerala State Council for Science,
Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) aims towards strengthening science
education in schools of Kerala.
 The program will be implemented by setting up model laboratories for conducting
science experiments in selected schools of the State.
z
 To stimulate interest in science at the school level by the
performance of experiments in Physics, Chemistry and
Biology by students .
 To provide hand on experiments to students for
observation, inference, interaction and self-designing of
experiments.
 To organize training programmes for the teachers for
demonstrating scientific experiments.
 To evolve low cost laboratory kit based on readily
available material for the performing of a range of
experiments
z
National Talent Search Examination
(NTSE)
 (NTSE) is a National Level scholarship program in India to
identify and nurture talented students.
 It honours and helps talented students by providing financial
assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship for the entire
Academic Career.
 Students studying in Class X are eligible to appear for the
selection process.
 As it is organized by an official body (NCERT)
z
 Selection procedure
 Identification of talent comprises a two-stage selection process.
 Stage-I : State level examination
 The first level exam is the state level examination, which has two parts for
nominating the required number of candidates for the second level test to
be conducted by the DSERT.
 Part-I: Mental Ability Test (MAT), and
 Part-II:Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)(with questions on History, Civics,
Geography, Economics, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.)
z
 Stage – II : National level examination . The national level
examination has two parts for nominating the required number of
candidates for the interviews to be conducted by the NCERT in
May:
