About IJSO
• The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a
competitive examination open to students of all countries in the
world, primarily studying in secondary schools. All basic subjects
of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) are
given roughly equal representation in the IJSO examination.
The Junior Science Olympiad program will follow the 5 stages.
• Note:- Stage I will be entirely the responsibility of IAPT.
All the remaining stages will be organized by the
HBCSE

Objectives of IJSO
• To stimulate the active interest of students in the
natural sciences.
• To promote their career as scientists.
• To enhance and develop international contacts in the
natural sciences.
• To promote future scientific collaboration.
• To encourage the formation of friendships within the
scientific community.
• To offer the opportunity to compare the syllabi and
educational trends in science education within the
participating countries.

EXAM PATTERN OR STAGES
The Jr. Science olympiad will follow the following 5 stages-
• NSEJS National Standard Examination in Jr. Sc.
• INJSO Indian National Jr. Sc. Olympiad
• OCSC Orientation Cum Selection Camp
• PDT Pre-departure Training Camp
• IJSO International Junior Sc. Olympiad.

Stage – 1
National Standard Examination in Junior
Science Olympiad (NSEJS)
• Organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT).
• Eligibility :All Indian students who are born on or after January
1, 1999 and, in addition, are in Class X, are eligible to appear in
NSEJS 2013 – 2014.
• Date : 4th week of Nov. month
• Time : 3 pm to 5 pm
• Duration : 2 Hours

Stage – 1 Paper PatternStage – 1 Paper Pattern
• The syllabus for NSEJS will be broadly equivalent to the
secondary school level (upto Class X) of CBSE.
• Paper Pattern : Objective
• No. of Questions : 80
• Total Marks : 240
• Subjects : Physics , Chemistry , Maths & Biology
• Negative Marking : -1
• Medium : English
• All students who qualify to appear for INJSO get a certificate
of merit from IAPT.

• Following are the certificates & awards given to stage1
qualified students-
1. Certificates to top 10% students of each center.
2. Merit certificates to statewise top 1% students.
3. Merit certificate to nationwise top 1% students.

Selection criteria for Stage II
• Selection to stage 2 will be based on following scheme-
• A student must score equal or greater score than a minimum
admissible score (MAS) which will be equal to 40% of the
maximum score in that subject.
• Here the students appeared in NSEJS from each State or UT is
considered the baseline. To calculate the no of qualifying
students from centers of State/UT.
• The no of students they select for stage 2 is around 300.
• Formula used to derive the state quota is-
S/T*300 round of to the nearest higher integer.

Stage – II
Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO)
• organized by HBCSE
• Eligibility : 300 Students select from Stage I examination (NSEJS) are eligible to appear
for INJSO.
• Tentative date:- 1st
week of February.
• Duration : 3 Hours
• Syllabus : The syllabus for INJSO will be broadly similar to NSEJS. The syllabus is,
however, only a broad guideline. Question and problems in National Olympiads are usually
non-conventional and of high difficulty level, comparable to International Olympiads.
• No. of Questions : 75
• Total Marks : 300
• Subjects Covered : Physics , Chemistry & Biology (from last 2 year)
• Negative Marking : -1

Stage – III
Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC)
• Organized by HBCSE in April to June for 2-3 weeks.
• Eligibility for OCSC :
• Around 35 students select from the merit list of Stage II (INJSO 2013) will be
eligible for OCSC 2013 in Junior Science.
• The camp will include several theoretical and experimental tests.
• The merit list of OCSC in Junior Science will be prepared on the basis of the
combined theoretical and experimental score aggregated over all the tests in the
camp, with 60% weightage for theory and 40% weightage for experiment.
• Top 6 students were selected as special merit awardees which are given Rs 5000
each in the form of books.
Note:-The 12 special merit awardees in Junior Science given at the end of the
OCSC 2012-2013

Stage – IV
PDT:- Pre-Departure Training
Organized by HBCSE in the month of July.
• Pre-departure Training (PDT) Camp for IJSO
The selected 6 member student team will undergo a rigorous
training program at HBCSE in theory and experiment. Special
laboratories are being developed at HBCSE for the purpose of
experimental training. Resource persons from HBCSE and
different institutions across the country will train the students.

Stage – V
Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad
(IJSO)
• The 6 student member team and 3 teacher leaders
will constitute the delegation to represent India at
the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)
2014 in the month of December.
• The 11th IJSO will be held in Netherlands December
2014.
