Good Tech: Can Technology Tackle Wicked Problems?
As digital transformation and tech progress accelerates, it has never been easier to leveraging tech to solve complexe problems: from digital circular fabrication, to low-cost open source prosthetics, drone-based industrial reforestation or artificial intelligence to tackle unemployment. In this keynote, I presented a few areas where tech could help us build a better world, while suggesting some design principles to ensure long-term sustainability, mission alignment, fair value distribution.

Whuffie Workshop at Best Buy
Tara Hunt held a workshop on applying the concept of "whuffie", which is a measure of social capital and reputation within online communities. The workshop consisted of 3 sections: an introduction to whuffie and social media trends, a discussion of how whuffie works, and an exercise session where participants developed strategies for applying whuffie principles to their business. Some key ideas discussed were focusing on qualitative over quantitative metrics, embracing chaos to be more open, making deposits to build social capital through generosity and helping others, and creating experiences that deliver notable value to core customers.

The companies have entered into a merger agreement to create a premier alternative fuel vehicle and engine company. The transaction will result in a combined equity value of $351 million based on the closing trading prices for the shares of both companies on August 31, 2015 and combined annual revenues ranging from $380 to $405 million projected for 2015. scientific problems are solved, software

government is run.
People are social animals, and as Shirky
notes, we now have tools that are
flexible enough to match our in-built
social capabilities. Things can get
done that weren't possible before
because the right expertise, the missing
information, or a large enough group of
people can now be gathered together at
low cost.
These developments open a number of
interesting questions for NSF and CISE.
What are the key research problems? How
should these developments change how
research is conducted? How can the
intersection of social science and
technology research be aided or
improved? And how should this effect
how NSF researchers get involved with
relevant government efforts, including
transparent government, emergency
response, and citizen science?
In this talk I attempt to summarize
and put some structure around some of
these developments.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
