The document analyzes Goodwin's theory and how it relates to the music videos for "This is What You Came For" by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna and "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. It discusses how each video uses techniques like thought beats, narrative and performance, star image, and relation to visuals to enhance the listening experience and promote the songs and artists. For example, lighting is synced to the beat in "This is What You Came For" and props like a jail cell relate directly to the narrative in "Radioactive".
Goodwin's Theory: Conventions of Music Videolhardt
A short introduction to the theory of Andrew Goodwin. This deals with the key areas of his theory in regards to music videos, including codes and conventions, and the purpose of music videos.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. GOODWIN’S THEORY ANALYSIS
• Thought beats- the structure speed and beat of the song are
represented through the way the frames are laid out and how they
transition, the brand identity of the singer also plays a part in this.
• narrative and performance- the video is essentially an advertisement
of the song so there needs to be a performance element.
• star image- the video is to advertise the star meaning the narrative
may be lost to focus on the star.
• relation to visuals- disjuncture- no relevance to the narrative,
amplify- the meaning is exaggerated through visual means, illustrate-
meaning made clear through the music video.
• technical codes- mise-en-scene, editing, camera angles to portray
the meaning of the song and amplify the music’s effect on the
listener.
3. CALVIN HARRIS- THIS IS WHAT YOU
CAME FOR FT. RIHANNA
Thought beats- this is used in the music video for Calvin Harris’ song in
a variety of ways
The addition of lights in time with the beat creates a flow and amplifies the effect of the
music’s impact on the viewer.
This supports the idea that the music video enhances the
experience of the viewer whilst listening to the music which is shown
in the Goodwin theory. This is further represented by the long take
with no cuts used to signify the chorus to the viewer.
4. CALVIN HARRIS- THIS IS WHAT YOU
CAME FOR FT. RIHANNA
Narrative and performance- this is used in the music video to give the
element of fun and having a good time helping the song to be marketed
as a party anthem as Rihanna is seen dancing in the majority of the
scenes hinting that the viewer should dance to the song.
Acting is used in the video also to help the
video flow and make it easier to watch e.g.
Rihanna pointing at the camera whilst singing
‘she’s looking at you’ directly involving the
viewer and giving the feel that Rihanna is
playing the character of the girl and the viewer
is the other character.
5. CALVIN HARRIS- THIS IS WHAT YOU
CAME FOR FT. RIHANNA
Rihanna is clearly the star in this video as 90% of the shots involve her
and portray her as a star linking in with the ‘star image’ sub-theory,
the use of proliferation of close-ups is also prominent in the video
suggesting that this will help with the profile of Rihanna and increase
her fame and reputation.
Star image- this is used throughout the music video for many reasons.
6. CALVIN HARRIS- THIS IS WHAT YOU
CAME FOR FT. RIHANNA
Relation to visuals- this video uses the amplify approach to relation to
visuals as it uses many visual features to enhance the music
‘This is what you came for’
‘lighting strikes every time you
move’
The use of a subtle point at the camera
when using the word ‘you’ directly
involves the viewer and enhances the
songs visual effect as it makes the
viewer feel involved and gripped
therefore amplifying the sound
The use of the visual aid of lighting in
the background really
7. CALVIN HARRIS- THIS IS WHAT YOU
CAME FOR
Technical codes- Moody lighting is
used in the music video to emphasise
the lightning flashes in the background
and the song has a moody tone so it fits
well.
Fast paced editing makes the scene
flow nicely between dancing and
performance segments, this creates an
element of fun and partying to the
music video.
The array of colours in contrast with the
dark background also creates the
clubbing and partying feel to the music
video.
8. IMAGINE DRAGONS- RADIOACTIVE
• Thought beats- this is used in the imagine dragons video in a variety
of ways.
The head hitting the wall is in time
with the drum beats, this helps the
viewer to picture the impact of
the teddy bear against the wall
this.
The woman walking is in time with
the guitar strums, this helps the
viewer.
9. IMAGINE DRAGONS- RADIOACTIVE
The cover and the cage could
foreshadow the band members in
the underground prison. Furthermore
the covered cage creates a sense
of mystery about what is inside and
is crucial to the narrative making
sense as the plot unfolds.
The narrative and performance are
inter twinned as the actor meets the
band in the end, this makes the
narrative more justified as the
performance element of the song to
advertise it (Goodwin's theory) is
heightened and improved by the
narrative connections.
Narrative and performance
10. RELATION TO VISUALS
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones.
Enough to make my systems blow.
Welcome to the new age, to the new
age.
Welcome to the new age, to the new
age.
Whoa, whoa, radioactive, radioactive.
Whoa, whoa, radioactive, radioactive
As you can see from the lyrics and the clip the they
are completely disjointed which follows along with
Goodwin's concept of disjuncture as the visuals have
no relation to the song lyrics, this emphasises that the
music videos narrative is not meant to send out a
particular message to the audience.
Relation to visuals
11. IMAGINE DRAGONS- RADIOACTIVE
Technical codes
Again the use of moody lighting
with the light focused on the
band member helps to create
star image through the
highlighting of the band member
and the darkness directly relates
to some of the dark undertones
to the song and music video.
The use of a mixture of fast cuts
and long scenes is used to help
build the narrative whilst also
supporting the performance
elements of the music video.
The specific use of props like the
fight arena and the jail cell
directly links to the narrative and
has a direct link to the song.
