The video for "Feel so close" by Calvin Harris is a narrative-based pop video that features Harris singing throughout in cut scenes, following conventions of the genre. It uses simple editing techniques like cuts and fades. The colors are dull at the start but brighten as the song progresses. Close-ups of Harris are included as required by record labels. The video amplifies the lyrics of happiness and feeling close by showing characters with friends and loved ones.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A key fact of pop videos is that they are largely
performance or narrative based and thus, include
the artist singing throughout, either in cut scenes
or throughout the entire video. The video I'm
analysing ‘feel so close’ by Clavin Harris is
narrative based and features Clalvin Harris
singing in cut scenes throughout the video
Another key convention in pop music videos is
that the editing is very simple in that it is usually

close’ as the video starts with no effect, it just
appears. it then goes to the straight video title and
then immediately introduces Clavin Harris. This
reinforces the artist and immediately inserts

Cut Cut
3. The video uses a very dull colour range at the start of the video, this is fairly typical of narrative based pop
videos, the couloirs then brighten up as the tempo increases throughout the video, this demonstrates that
the happiness in the video increases and everybody is having more fun while the main part of the song is
playing
The setting for the video is largely in American style estates, the colder scheme is the neutral greys, dull
greens and beige. This may connote that there is brightness everywhere in the right situation.
Colourful clothing
(shows enjoyment and

Dull estate (sows an
otherwise dull and
boring situation)

In this music video there is certainly a link between the lyrics of the song and the visuals in the video, thus
making the video illustrative/ amplifing. Calvin Harris is singing about happiness and ‘feeling close’ this is
illustrated by the actors in the video as they are either with friends or loved ones having fun. There isn't
much depth to the lyrics or the visuals as with a lot of pop music videos and songs.
The video presents multiple groups of people all held together by the happiness they are feeling, which
matches what the the lyrics are saying, it gives an insight into various different groups and amplifies the
message that happiness is transferable to many situations and doesn't require specifics.

The music starts off quite slow, and the video at that point features slow editing and dull actions from the
actors. As well as the dull colours present in these sections of the video.
As the music starts to speed up and becomes more pop like the actors brighten up and the editing
becomes faster paced and the colours start to apper.
5. nclude the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which re
In pop music, record labels requre close ups of the artist in order to put across their image and in order to
bring the audience closer to the artist. In ‘feel so close’ there are a significant amount of close ups of
Calvin Harris singing. This complies with the requirement and brings Calvin Harris closer to the audience of
the video. It also allows him to put across emotions (however his style is rather emotionless) and for the
audience to get more of a feel for the lyrics.
The record labels are usually keen for artists to have specific
styles that are retained throughout and consistently in all of
their performances, this is true for ‘feel so close’ as calvin
harris stays in the same situation no matter where in the
song and doesn't change his expression. This provides
some continuity in an otherwise jumpy video.
6. o notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristi
This element of convention is largely untrue on this video as there isn't much looking that occurs during the
video, instead it rather focuses on the ‘right here right now’ approach and does away with screens and
mirrors. This could be purposeful and to accentuate the fact that modern videos rely too much on screens
and other such prompts.
As for the treatment of the female body, it is largely used as a viewing opportunity for the male gaze, sue
to the mise en scene used in the video.
However having said that, the video doesn't tend to focus on the women too much, so the camera is only
voyeuristic on a moderate level as it doesn't focus on the breasts and bottoms if the women. Instead
focusing on the larger picture.
7. The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a visual style)
As said before, the record labels are usually keen for artists to have specific styles that are retained
throughout and consistently in all of their performances, this is true for Clavin Harris as he adopts a
similar style in all of his work. He is usually present throughout this videos and wears dull coloured
clothing
8. There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).
Whilst there are links between this video and TV and films, there is no obvious intention to link them
with one another. The video is made to stand in its own right and doesn't replicate many if any
concepts presented in TV or films

A key fact of pop videos is that they are largely
performance or narrative based and thus, include
the artist singing throughout, either in cut scenes
or throughout the entire video. The video in this
analysis largely contradicts this convention as it is
mostly concept based as it doesn't follow a
particular narrative line.
Another key convention in pop music videos is
that the editing is very simple in that it is usually
fades or straight cuts. This is partially true for
‘ready for your love’ as the editing largely consists
of fades and cuts, however the overall effect in the
video are more complex as it feature various
visual effects.
Fade Cut
11. This video uses colour heavily to entice viewers and to accentuate the feel of the music. This is a
convention in producing pop music videos, as it fits in with the genre well.
Another convention that this video complies with is that there are a lot of close ups with the lead artists.
Furthermore, most of the actors in the video are seen dancing at some point in the video. Another
interesting factor and one that is a genre characteristic, is that all of the actors and extras are all very
polished or interesting in some way.
Going hand in hand with the colour aspect of the video, another convention that ‘ready for your love’
follows is that most of the video features either brightness or darkness, however usually for short spells of
time
12. between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amp
The visuals are amplifying the song lyrics as they follow the theme they set, this is carried out in various
ways. The first of these is that all the actors are happy and dancing. They are also largely trying to get with
the other people, thus relating to the ‘ready for your love’ line that reoccurs throughout the song.
One other way in which the lyrics are amplified by the visuals present in the video is that the colour
scheme is bright and connotes fun and love, both of which are talked about or referred to in the lyrics
c and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illus
The pace of the editing speeds up as the music increases in tempo, this helps the viewers to become
immersed in the video. The changes in colour also become more sharp as the tempo increases. Overall
the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is again amplifying as there is not a direct narrative
based link.
As the music starts to speed up and becomes more pop like the actors brighten up and the editing
becomes faster paced and the colours start to appear more frequently.
13. nclude the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which re
In pop music, record labels require close ups of the artist in order to put across their image and in order to
bring the audience closer to the artist. In ‘ready for your love’ there are a significant amount of close ups of
MNEK singing. This complies with the requirement and brings MNEK closer to the audience of the video. It

Another aspect of the demands of the record label would be that the artist has to develop certain
characteristics over their videos and other performances to help sell more and build a marketing persona.
In this case the specific style is that he wears outlandish clothing and that creates an element of intrigue
and differentiation. Which ultimately attracts attention.
14. o notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristi
This element of convention is largely untrue on this video as there isn't much looking that occurs during the
video, instead it rather focuses on the ‘live now for now’ approach and does away with screens and
mirrors. This could be purposeful and to accentuate the fact that modern videos rely too much on screens
and other such prompts.
As for the treatment of the female body, it is largely used as a viewing opportunity for the male gaze, due
to the mise en scene used in the video.
However having said that, the video doesn't tend to focus on the women too much, so the camera is only

throughout and consistently in all of their performances, this is true for MNEK as he adopts a similar
style in all of his work. He is usually dressed in outlandish clothes and is seen close up. Gorgon City,
as they are not seen in the video don't have a style but videos for their music carry the identity
instead.

19. This music video features visual effects heavily and to an extent relies upon them to be interesting and
captivation, by definition this is a convention typical of pop/rap performance driven videos as they are
largely based in a studio and in most cases the basic background and floor would not fit the desired effect.
Colour is also relied upon to engage at the audience.
Another element that is present throughout this video is that the female singer ‘Miley Cyrus’ is seen
dresses in a sexually provoking fashion and, this is a convention often featured in videos of this type of
music as it is a genre where this is seen as acceptable and in some cases necessary.
20. between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amp
The visuals are amplifying the song lyrics as they follow the theme they set, this is carried out in various
ways. The first of these is that all the singers are appearing self centred, which is what the lyrics suggest,
the visual effects of the video try to create a sense of falseness and imagination about the video, which
relates to a way in which the lyrics could be read, that being that it is a false illusion of the person that
thinks the things.
c and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illus
The music is a modern and high tempo style music and therefore this is amplified by the visuals as they
too are modern and advanced.

style that is being sung

In this case the specific style follows Will.i.am’s style and that involves impressive modern style graphic
