To stay healthy, we need an adequate and varied diet consisting of foods from five food groups: carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, proteins, dairy, and fats/sugars. Carbohydrates like cereals provide energy but some contain gluten which people with celiac disease cannot eat. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals and we should have 5 servings per day. Dairy foods like milk build strong teeth and bones but some have high fat. Proteins like meat help build strong muscles. Fats and sugars should be limited as too much can cause heart disease. A balanced diet following the food pyramid is important for overall health and wellness.
