2. INTRODUCTION
• Coilia dussumieri , the goldspotted grenadier anchovy, is a
species of ray-finned fish in the family Engraulidae.
• It is found in coastal waters and estuaries in the tropical western
Indo-Pacific region.
• They are saline water fish but also able to tolerate lowered
salinity.
4. DISTRIBUTION
• Indian Ocean: India from Bombay to Calcutta, probably
also Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
• Western Central Pacific: Thailand to Java, presumably also
Kalimantan. Valenciennes listed a specimen from Mahe
which lies to the south of Cannanore, India but there is no
such specimen in Paris.
6. FOOD AND FEEDING HABITS-
Carnivorous species
1. Copepods
2. Prawn and fish larvae
3. Stomatopod larvae
4. Mysids
5. Isopods
6. Sagitta
7. • pelagic-neritic
• amphidromous –Refers to fishes that regularly
migrate between freshwater and the sea (in
both directions), but not for the purpose of
breeding, as in anadromous and catadromous
species
• freshwater; Brackish and marine water
• depth range 0 – 50 m

9. ECOLOGICAL ROLE
• The decline no. of anchovies could have
profound implications across the food web,
as anchovies are a primary food source for
sea lions.
• A drop in anchovy populations can affect
sea lion survival rates.
• Anchovies are a “forage fish,” a grouping
of small abundant fish that serve an
important role in the food chain

recorded from Indonesia.
inhabits inlets and coastal waters in schools, often very
abundant; also, a brackish-water population in the rivers
entering the Gippsland Lakes
