Glycomet tablets contain metformin hydrochloride as the active ingredient. Metformin is used along with diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes by improving glucose tolerance and lowering blood glucose levels. It works by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from food and produced by the liver. Common side effects include headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious potential side effect, especially in patients with kidney or liver problems. Metformin should be used cautiously during pregnancy and is classified as pregnancy category B.
