Jardiance (Empagliflozin tablets) is used
along with diet and exercise to improve
glycemic control in adults with type 2
diabetes mellitus and to reduce the risk of
cardiovascular death in adult patients with
type 2 diabetes mellitus and established
cardiovascular disease.

➢ The adult oral dose is 10 mg once daily,
administered in the morning, with or without
food. The dose may be increased to 25 mg
once daily, if necessary.
➢Treatment with Jardiance tablets must not
be initiated in case the eGFR is below 45
mL/min/1.73 m2 and must be stopped if eGFR
falls below 45 mL/min/1.73 m2

Jardiance (Empagliflozin tablets) have
to be stored at controlled room
temperature i.e. 25°C (77°F) with
excursions permitted between 15° to
30°C (59° to 86°F).
Keep this as well as all other medicines
away from children and pets.

Jardiance should not be used in patients with
type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of
diabetic ketoacidosis.
Monitor renal function before starting therapy
and at least annually. Cases of hepatic injury
have been reported with Empagliflozin during
clinical trials.
Osmotic diuresis accompanying therapeutic
glucosuria may lead to a modest decrease in blood
pressure.
Therefore, caution should be exercised in patients
with known cardiovascular disease, patients on
anti hypertensive therapy with a history of
hypotension or patients aged 75 years and above.

In case of conditions that may lead to fluid loss
(e.g. gastrointestinal illness), careful monitoring
of volume status and electrolytes is
recommended.
Temporary interruption of treatment with
Jardiance must be considered until the fluid
loss is corrected.
Temporary interruption of Empagliflozin tablets
should be considered in patients with
complicated urinary tract infections.
Experience in New York Heart Association
(NYHA) class I-II is limited, and there is
no experience in clinical studies with
empagliflozin in NYHA class III-IV.

Due to its mechanism of action, patients taking
Jardiance will test positive for glucose in their
urine.
The tablets contain lactose and should not be
used in patients with rare hereditary
problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp
lactase deficiency, or glucose galactose
malabsorption.
Use with diuretics can increase the risk of
dehydration and hypotension.
Insulin and insulin secretagogues may
increase the risk of hypoglycaemia therefore,
a lower dose of insulin or an insulin
secretagogue may be required.

Contraindications
Jardiance is contraindicated in patients with a
hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin or any other
component of this medication.
This medicine is also contraindicated in patients
with type 1 diabetes, high blood or urine ketone
levels (diabetic ketoacidosis), Severe renal
impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis.

13. Empagliflozin Side Effects

➢Jardiance (Empagliflozin tablets) side
effects can include the following:
➢Very common: Hypoglycaemia
(when used with sulphonylurea or
insulin).
➢Common: Vaginal moniliasis,
vulvovaginitis, balanitis and other genital
infections, urinary tract infection, pruritus
(generalised), increased urination.
➢Uncommon: Volume depletion, dysuria.

14. Empagliflozin Overdose

In case of Jardiance (Empagliflozin tablets)
overdose the normal supportive measures
(e.g., remove unabsorbed material from the
gastrointestinal tract, employ clinical
monitoring, and institute supportive
treatment) as required due to the patient's
clinical status.
Removal of Empagliflozin by hemodialysis
has not been studied.

15. Empagliflozin During Pregnancy

Empagliflozin (Jardiance tablets) has been
classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy
Category C.
There are no adequate and well-controlled
studies of Jardiance (Empagliflozin tablets) in
pregnant women. Jardiance must be used
during pregnancy only if the potential benefit
justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Based on results from studies conducted on
animals, Empagliflozin can affect renal
development and maturation. In studies
conducted in rats, Empagliflozin crosses the
placenta and reaches fetal tissues.
