The Glorious Revolution of 1688 established a constitutional monarchy in Great Britain. King James II, who was Catholic, faced opposition from the Protestant Parliament and people. They invited William and Mary of Orange to become the new monarchs on the condition that they agree to a Bill of Rights that would limit the power of the monarch and increase the power of Parliament. When William and Mary arrived in England with an army, James II fled to France, establishing William and Mary as the new Protestant monarchs of Britain.
