The global perspectives in the future of health promotion. Interventions in health promotion on adolescent physical activity. University of Eastern Finland, lecture 19th March 2020
Differences in physical activity between adolescent males and females with an...Kwok Ng
This study examined differences in physical activity levels between adolescent males and females with and without disabilities using data from the 2017 Finnish School Health Promotion Study. The study found that males were more likely to meet physical activity recommendations compared to females. Among inactive youth, females reported participating in more physical activity than males. Additionally, adolescents with certain disabilities like seeing or hearing difficulties did not necessarily have lower physical activity levels than peers without disabilities. The study provides insight into targeting physical activity interventions for specific subgroups.

Identifying undernutrition and obesity on students and propose public policies of health are urgent issues. This paper presents a study with weight and stature from students collected by physical education teachers (PEF) in schools of a city near São Paulo. The PEF collected the data and they were inserted in a program especially developed for each school Department (AENE Project). The datas were analyzed by software and evaluation done based on a World Health Organization (WHO_2007) table, that develops health programs worldwide. The results evaluations were used to raise the students and family, teachers and responsibles for treatment search (when required).
There has been an impassioned debate about children’s wellbeing in Britain since a 2007 UNICEF report on the subject put the UK at the bottom of a list of 21 rich countries.
In our report, we use data from the 2005 Families and Children Study (FACS) to look at England, Scotland and Wales, and compare income and wellbeing indicators in all three countries.
Adjusted incomes (for what families can buy with it) are slightly smaller for Child poverty is greater in England than in Scotland and Wales, and low incomepoorer families tend to have slightly lower purchasing power, and child poverty is greater in England than in Scotland and Wales, but England fares better than its smaller neighbours when it comes to key wellbeing indicators, such as health, housing and child behaviour.
We argue that, when comparing different countries on the British mainland, income by itself is not the best measure of children's wellbeing.
ABSTRACT- The rising incidence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents has become a cause of concern for India. Overweight/Obesity is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) but it needs to be addressed seriously. Research has shown that modifiable and environmental factors along with genetics triggers the risk of cardiovascular diseases quite early in childhood threatening the health prospects of adults. It is crucial to address the causes of overweight/obesity like physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, lack of knowledge and awareness and impact of media and advertising. Clustering of cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, abdominal obesity, high triglycerides in children and adolescents is an alarming sign. In order to dodge this serious public health crisis in near future we need to curb the prevailing risk factors of overweight/obesity. A holistic approach to tackle the obesity epidemic with an array of activities from policy making to program implementation, community education to individual knowledge and skill development is required. We need to promote healthy eating and lifestyle modifications in childhood and adolescents to prevent CVD risk in adulthood. Key-words- Adolescents, Obesity, Overweight, Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract—Obesity is the major global nutrition concern. Modernisation and urbanisation have led to changes in dietary and lifestyle factors which are contributing to the increased prevalence of overweight and obesity.
Objective: To find out various life style risk factors for obesity among school children of affluent families aged 10-18 years in Jaipur city.
Methods: A cross-sectional study in ten randomly selected schools of Jaipur city with tuition fee > 18000 ₹/year was conducted from July 2012 to April 2013. 1610 students of class V to XII were included and their detailed life style history with anthropometric measurements was recorded after their informed written consent. Indian Academy of Pediatrics' growth Monitoring Guidelines for children from birth to 18 years was followed for defining and classifying obesity.
Result: 364 (22.61%) participants were found obese/overweight. Watching television during meals, frequency of main meals outside home per month, frequency of snacks outside home per week and duration of television/ computer watching per day were found significant predictors of overweight/ obesity on binary multivariate logistic regression method.
Conclusion: The present study highlights childhood overweight/obesity is an emerging health problem (22.61%) and lifestyle factors are important risk for it.

- Add Health is a longitudinal study that began in 1994 to examine the health and behaviors of adolescents in the United States from adolescence into adulthood. It utilizes a nationally representative sample and collects extensive data through in-home interviews and biological specimens.
- The study collects data on the social, family, school, and neighborhood environments of participants and how these impact health outcomes. It also examines genetic and biological factors. This allows for analysis of gene-environment interactions and pathways from social experiences to health.
- Add Health has completed 4 waves of data collection from adolescence through age 42. It includes measures of physical health, mental health, substance use, relationships, attitudes, and more. This provides a valuable resource for understanding
This document provides a critique of government strategies in the UK and locally in Sunderland to reduce childhood obesity over the last decade. It begins with an introduction describing rates of childhood obesity nationally and in Sunderland. It then examines potential causes of obesity and discusses national and local strategies related to nutrition, physical activity, and food in schools. The document compares these strategies and evaluates their effectiveness in reducing childhood obesity.

Nearly a quarter of adolescent girls aged 15-19 in Honduras have been pregnant at least once according to national surveys from 2005 and 2011-2012. The adolescent pregnancy rate increases with each year of age from 5.4% at age 15 to 40.2% at age 19 based on 2005-2007 data. Adolescent pregnancy rates are higher in rural areas than urban areas and increase with lower levels of educational attainment. The high adolescent pregnancy rates in Honduras indicate a need for advocacy to promote and protect the sexual and reproductive rights and health of adolescents in the country.

This document discusses how access to healthcare and preventive health services impacts children's health and development. It notes that while North Carolina has made progress in enrolling children in health insurance, allowing access to services, about 1 in 20 children remain uninsured. Expanding Medicaid eligibility to include more parents would help promote family health and children's development by helping parents access healthcare and be better caregivers. The document advocates for policy changes and enrollment strategies to reach more eligible children and parents with health coverage.
1) The document explores the relationship between energy balance and weight status in adolescents using data from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
2) An energy balance composite score was created from survey items related to energy intake (food and drink) and energy expenditure (physical activity and sedentary behavior).
3) Results found the energy balance composite and energy expenditure scores varied significantly based on weight category, with healthier weight adolescents having lower energy intake, higher energy expenditure, and lower composite scores.
4) Racial/ethnic differences were also observed in energy balance scores, with weight category more strongly associated with scores across ethnic groups.

Reproductive Health (RH) is among the most fundamental aspects of life. Yet they often receive little attention in public policy discussions because of cultural and political sensitivities. In Sri Lanka, traditional religious and family values, designed to protect adolescents, can restrict RH education for youth. Some Sri Lankan parents assume that adolescents do not need to know about RH issues until they are married. This idea is rooted in traditional values and long-standing taboos surrounding sexuality that need to be examined in light of protecting health. This study examines the knowledge and perception regarding reproductive health and opinion toward reproductive health education among adolescents in Sri Lanka. The Main outcome measures were adolescent’s knowledge of reproductive health concepts, pregnancy and abortion.

Health and nutritional status are two crucial and interlinked aspects of human development, which in to interact with demographic variables Malnutrition a condition that occurs due to intake of inadequate amount of nutrients leading to insufficient nourishment continues to be a problem of considerable magnitude in most of the developing countries in the world. Preschool children are one of the most nutritionally vulnerable segments of the population. Nutrition during the first 5 years has not only an impact on growth and morbidity during childhood, but also acts as a determinant of nutritional status in adolescent and adult life. Global comparative data indicate that contrary to common perception, prevalence of under nutrition is highest in South Asian children. India has the highest occurrence of childhood malnutrition in the world. Malnutrition is responsible for 55 percent of all deaths of children younger than 5 years of age globally. Malnutrition makes a child susceptible to infections and delayed recovery, thus increasing mortality and morbidity. It is therefore logical to direct attention to the quality of life of the survivors Bose and Das, 2010 . Children tend to think of the last decades of life—when they think of such things at all—as a time of physical limitations rather than a time of active, vibrant and full participation in life. Yet as average longevity increases worldwide and medical progress enables longer healthy lives, a shift in that view is in order.
With this as background, The Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by Merck, undertook a study of five nations—representing both wealthy and middle-income countries—to determine the degree to which good health practices are being taught in schools and fostered in the home and in the community.
Where relevant, the research also considers whether health education is being provided in the context of the long-term benefits—that is, with the aim of achieving longer healthy life years. The five countries surveyed are Germany, South Africa, India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

This document discusses the importance of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education in schools. It argues that PSHE should have statutory status to ensure it is properly prioritized and taught in all schools. It provides evidence that PSHE education improves educational outcomes, reduces risky behaviors, and yields long term social and economic benefits by developing students' life skills. The document recommends making PSHE a core subject within the Ofsted inspection framework and providing consistent training for PSHE teachers.
The document summarizes the methodology of the Irish Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Study 2010. It describes how a nationally representative sample of school-aged children was obtained through a two-stage cluster sampling process involving randomly selecting schools and classes within schools. Data was collected through self-reported questionnaires administered in classrooms. The study aimed to monitor health behaviors and their social context among Irish children aged 9-18 years in line with international HBSC protocols.

This document is a report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood examining the link between movement and positive mental health in children. It provides context on the growing concerns around children's mental health in the UK. The report includes 10 chapters covering topics such as the historical definitions of mental health, wellbeing and movement, the mind-body connection, the impact of digital culture, intervention approaches, addressing inequalities, international models of practice, training needs and recommendations. It aims to inform government policy and strategy to position increasing movement and physical activity as a preventative approach to mental health support for young people.
This document provides an introduction to critical appraisal and its importance in evaluating research. It then reviews a clinical paper on risk factors for overweight and obesity among school children in Bangladesh. The review summarizes the paper's objectives, study design, population, sampling, variables, analysis, findings and conclusions. It concludes that having overweight parents and engaging in sedentary activities over 4 hours per day increased obesity risk, while home exercise reduced risk. The review also lists some limitations of the paper.

ASEFSU23 Background Paper Child Obesity In IndiaNathan Mathis
This document discusses the growing crisis of childhood obesity in India, focusing on Delhi. It finds that childhood obesity levels are increasing, especially in urban areas and among affluent families. This is linked to factors of urbanization like reduced physical activity and increased access to unhealthy, calorie-dense foods. Children in Delhi are 5 times more likely to be overweight than rural children due to different diets and lifestyles. If left unaddressed, childhood obesity can lead to lifelong health issues and economic costs. The document calls for policy measures that consider the urban factors driving obesity and link urban development programs to addressing this issue.
This document summarizes a systematic review of factors associated with childhood overweight and obesity in South Asian countries. The review included 11 studies from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka that used BMI to measure overweight and obesity in children and adolescents. The studies found wide variation in overweight prevalence from 3.1-19.7% and obesity prevalence from 1.2-14.5%. Lack of physical activity was associated with overweight/obesity in most studies, while higher socioeconomic status, urban residence, and consumption of junk food/fast food were also identified as risk factors.
Screening Tool for Developmental Disorders in ChildrenApollo Hospitals
Developmental problems are a diverse group of conditions that affect and limit children and their life-chances. A ready reference for a Paediatrician would be the first six chapters of the latest edition (18th) of the Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics (The Field of Pediatrics, Growth & Development, Psychological Disorders, Social Issues, Children with Special Health Needs and Nutrition and Human Genetics and Metabolic Diseases).
This document provides an introduction to the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) program in India, which aims to screen over 270 million children aged 0-18 for defects, diseases, deficiencies, and developmental delays. It does this through mobile health teams that screen children in anganwadis and schools. Children identified with issues are referred to primary or community health centers, or district early intervention centers for further examination and treatment if needed. The district early intervention centers are located in district hospitals and have medical professionals and facilities to assess children for conditions like hearing, vision, motor and cognitive impairments. The goal of the program is to identify health issues in children early and ensure they receive

Keynote Presentation - IPARC conference - Kwok NgKwok Ng
These are the slides for the IPARC conference, keynote presentation about the Impact of COVID-19 on adolescents physical activity engagement.
IPARC is the Irish Physical Activity Research Collaboration and presentation was held in January 2021.
In this talk, I describe briefly the importance of influencers among adolescents, some findings about PA and changes during COVID-19 and how the results fit into a Socio-Ecological Model. There were barriers and facilitators to physical activity during the Spring 2020 lockdown in Ireland. Schools, sport clubs, and gyms were closed, and people were restricted to move within a few km of their homes.

Introduction to Open Science through educational resources, sources, methodologies, data, access and peer-reviews.
The document discusses the use of Peerwise, an online platform where students create questions and answers to test their understanding of course material. It provides an overview of Peerwise and examples of how it has been implemented in various courses. Studies have found that students who actively used Peerwise by writing questions, answers, and comments performed better than students who did not engage. However, considerations must be made around workload and assessment requirements when deciding how to incorporate Peerwise into a course.

Physical activity behaviours and functional difficulties: Results from the F-...Kwok Ng
Kwok Ng presented findings from the Finnish School-aged Physical Activity (F-SPA) study on the physical activity behaviors of adolescents with functional difficulties. The study found that adolescents with disabilities were less physically active, spent more time on screens, slept less, and participated less in sports clubs compared to peers without disabilities. Differences between disability types were minimal. The results suggest health promotion for adolescents with disabilities needs a biopsychosocial approach to address variations in needs based on disability.
Adapting physical activity survey instruments for Inclusive Education SettingsKwok Ng
This document summarizes research adapting physical activity survey instruments for use in inclusive education settings. The researchers converted existing national surveys to be more accessible for students with disabilities. They tested modified surveys with easier reading levels and images in special education classrooms. Most students were able to complete the adapted surveys in under 30 minutes. Teachers provided feedback that visual aids helped students understand questions better. The study demonstrated the feasibility of collecting comparable physical activity data from students with disabilities for national monitoring.
Inclusive Educational Learning EnvironmentsKwok Ng
This document provides information about Kwok Ng, a postdoctoral researcher from the University of Eastern Finland and University of Limerick. It discusses Ng's research areas such as inclusive educational learning environments and special education. Specific topics covered include the physical, pedagogical, social, and technological environments that impact learning. The document also presents data on disability rates across European countries and an upcoming study Ng will conduct on testing the effectiveness of online learning.
Adapting physical activity survey instruments for children in special educati...Kwok Ng
This document summarizes research adapting physical activity survey instruments for use with children in special education settings. It discusses converting existing surveys to be administered through self-report for this population. A study was conducted to test the intra-rater reliability of a modified Child Functioning Module questionnaire administered to children in special education schools in Finland with a 2-week gap between administrations. The results showed substantial agreement for a vision item but poor agreement for items on self-care, attention, and coping with change, suggesting the need to modify question wording and examples to improve understanding for this group.
This study investigated the use of physical activity tracking devices and mobile apps among Finnish adolescents and the association with daily moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The study found that over half of adolescents had smartphone apps for physical activity monitoring, but few reported actively using devices such as heart rate monitors or sports watches. Adolescents who actively used tracking devices were more likely to meet daily MVPA recommendations compared to those who did not have or actively use devices. The study concluded that while commercial activity trackers have reached many adolescents, more research is needed to understand how their use impacts health behaviors.
Increased Injuries from Sport in adolescents with LTIDKwok Ng
The document examines injuries in adolescents with and without long-term illnesses or disabilities (LTID) in Finland. It finds that adolescents with LTID, especially severe LTID, report more injuries than their non-disabled peers, and the rate increases with age. Sports-related injuries are less common in severe LTID, but sports club members are over 7 times more likely to experience serious sports injuries. The severity of LTID appears to correlate with higher rates of overall injuries.

Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study is an
international survey of adolescent health and health behaviour
in social and developmental context
Every four years HBSC collects data on 11, 13, and 15 year olds’
health and well-being, social environments and health
behaviours.
HBSC uses the findings at national and international levels to:
gain new insight into young people’s health and well-being,
understand the social determinants of health,
and inform policy and practice to improve young people’s lives.
What is HBSC?
@kwokwng
HBSC initiated in 1982 by three countries, shortly
afterwards adopted as a WHO collaborative study
HBSC now includes 49 countries and regions across
Europe and North America.
A collaborative project between national research
teams and in partnership with WHO
Surveys conducted every 4 years using standard
international questionnaire in all countries

The international standard questionnaire produced
for every survey cycle enables the collection of
common data across all participating countries and
thus enables the quantification of patterns of key
health behaviours, health indicators and contextual
variables.
These data allow cross-national comparisons to be
made and, with successive surveys, trend data is
gathered and may be examined at both the national
and cross-national level.
