Glazing is a process that involves painting a thin layer of glass and minerals onto ceramic pieces. It serves to color, decorate, and waterproof items. There are two main types: underglaze, which can cover the entire piece, and glaze, which is only applied to the outside. Glazes have been used since ancient Egypt and were originally made from powdered glass and minerals. A proper glaze balance is needed between silica, alumina, and flux ingredients. Glazes can be applied through dipping, brushing, or spraying. The glazed pieces then undergo a second firing to transform the glaze into its final appearance.

The physical and chemical properties of the clay minerals determine their utilization in the process industries. The three most commonly used clay bodies are earthenware clay bodies, mid-fire stoneware clay bodies, and high-fire stoneware clay bodies. Pottery and ceramics are made by forming and firing raw materials including clay and pottery stones. They are divided into several categories, such as earthenware and porcelain, depending on such factors as raw material composition, firing temperatures and water absorption. Fine Ceramics are primarily composed of unique minerals such as alumina porcelain.

Hadj Ounis's most notable work is his sculpture titled "Metamorphosis." This piece showcases Ounis's mastery of form and texture, as he seamlessly combines metal and wood to create a dynamic and visually striking composition. The juxtaposition of the two materials creates a sense of tension and harmony, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between nature and industry.
2. Ceramic pottery
• 'Ceramic' comes from the Greek
word meaning 'pottery'.
• The art of making objects by
shaping pieces of clay and then
baking them
• Pottery is a form of ceramics
• Ceramics are not only made by clay
but also other materials
3. Introduction to Glazing
• Glazing is when you paint a thin layer
of minerals and glass onto a fired or
unfired ceramic piece
• Glaze can serve to color, decorate or
waterproof an item.
• Glazes may also enhance the
underlying design or texture
4. Glaze vs Underglaze:
• Underglaze: can be put all over
the ceramic piece (inside,
outside & bottom)
• Glaze: liquid glass that can be put
everywhere except the bottom;
also makes piece food safe
5. History
• Glazes have been discovered to
have been used in the decoration of
ceramics as far back as the early
Egyptian period.
• Powdered glass was originally used
as the base of historic glazes.
•
• Minerals and water-soluble salts
were added which altered the color
and texture of the final product.
6. Major elements in glaze
• Glazes need a balance of the 3 main
ingredients: Silica, Alumina and Flux.
• Too much flux causes a glaze to run,
excessive flux oxides may form
visible, possibly lumpy, crystals.
• Too much silica will create a stiff
• Too much alumina causes a glaze to
stiffen and tend towards opacity
7. How to apply glaze
• DIPPING-Dipping is the quickest
way to glaze a form
• Brushing -Brushing is the most
time-consuming way to glaze
8. Sponges can be used for direct
glazing
• Spraying is the second
quickest way to glaze a piece.
9. Second firing
• Bisque firing is fired to
between 980 and 1,100°C
(1,800–2,000°F).
• Once glaze is painted on the
piece will go back into the kiln
to change the glaze to its final
look
• In manual firing temperature is
measured according to the
cone.
