Site Visit Report
• CLAY: Natural rock or soil which is fine
grained and contain silica , alumina , organic
matter.
• Types : Earthenware , Stoneware, Porcelain.
• CLAYBODY : Consist of different materials
like silica , clay , fluxes , grog.
• Types : Earthenware , Stoneware , Porcelain.
Traditional pottery
• The clay used is terracota .
• They mix wheat straws , cow dung , horse dung ,
in it.
• Plasticity is gained to clay which is needed.
• Legs are used to mix clay.
• A pond like recessed place is created in soil to
mix clay.
• Religious related thing are made.
• They have belief in things.
• They make things on manual wheel.
• Yellow clay is applied on things made by them
which on drying turns out red .
• Things like toys , utensils , kodh (consist of
calf, cow , shepherd and shepherdess ) ,
gummat (residence of spirit ) , male , female
idols , pots , etc
• Things are baked in open kiln.
• Made by laying things on ash and placing hollow
pots , cow dung cakes , husk surrounding it.
• By putting pre – burnt cow dung cakes on cakes
placed in kiln they lit kiln.
• The kiln runs for 5 hrs .
• On being baked the things turns out red .
• Products can also be painted.
• Apply “GERU” on products which is also
a kind of clay.
Pottery
• Mechanical wheels are also available for pottery.
• The product to suitable size is made on it .
• Then are tapped by putting it on ash .
• They are tapped on outside as well as innerside.
• Then are placed in moulds of ash to get them
shaped.
• Then are placed in sun so that they get dry.
• Position is to be regularly changed to prevent single
part from over drying.
• Its then painted with “ GERU ”
• Also designs by using white clay are created.
Bricks
• It’s a rectangular unit composed of clay.
• Its size is 9” x 4” x 3”.
• The clay is mixed with husk and saw dust.
• Then is laid in mould whose sides are
coated with sand in order to get brick
easily unmoulded .
• The excess clay is removed.
• Then it is baked in kiln
• The indension made in brick is called
FROG.
• The kiln has a temperature of 700 ⁰ C
• The tunnel kiln is created in which bricks are laid.
• From top coal is added and they use fevicol to
transfer heat .
• The chimney is placed on tunnel.
• Its position has to be kept on changing so that
other chambers also get fired.
• The chamber has mud doors.
• The kiln runs for 24 hrs.
• Once the bricks get baked they are covered with
plastic.
• On average one person makes 1000 bricks.
• The manufacturing process runs 8 months in a year.
