A person who feels they need to accomplish something needs to have the tenacity to
complete it. They would feel satisfied once they do, and discontented otherwise. For
an external source to destroy significant progress, anger will be conveyed. In some
cases, it can change a person s perspective on reality. As they continue to age, their
outlook would mature to accept reality as it is. James Joyces short story, Araby,
centers on an unnamed boy who is on a romantic quest for his crush; a journey to
the bazaar, aptly named Araby, in order to get her a souvenir. Initially, a normal
endeavor for his crush; however soon becomes ill fated. Joyce also implements
another narrative element to the story; the same boy now older reminiscing those
events unfazed and dispirited. The narrative of the older counterpart initially is
subtle; but later throughout the story, it is effective about commenting his past.
Reinforcing this is his imaginative obsession with his crush that he soon becomes
oblivious to obstacles in his life that would complete his dream of love. To make his
quest more difficult, he is delayed by his uncle who does not have the same passion
of the bazaar s importance unlike the boy. By implementing imagery, two point of
views, and conflict, Araby reveals the boy s ignorance to the harsh reality he resides

For many, the American Dream entails upward social mobility. For a few, the
dream of increased social status comes true. Throughout my life, I experienced
many changes in my socio economic class. I was born into a working Middle
Class family. Both of my parents graduated from high school but neither attended
college. My father worked the stereotypical nine to five job as a bank teller. My
mother was a stay at home parent raising me along with my two older brothers. We
could have been described as the typical Middle ClassAmerican family. As the term
Middle Class implies, our family was not wealthy, but at the same point, we were
not considered poor. My parents were able to afford a roof over our head, food on
the table, and heat to keep us warm during the cold Wisconsin winters. Our class
status changed when my father began earning more money. Along with the increase
in monetary items came changes to my father s social status. He was suddenly
being offered opportunities that were previously off limits to him. He was
introduced to individuals who in their own right were wealthy and well off. Through
those new personal connections, my father s wealth, power, and prestige increased.
Those three factors are what make up Max Weber s concept of Socio Economic
Status. By reflecting on my own experiences regarding changes in socio economic

I chose the article Disliking Books at an Early Age by Gerald Graff. He is a
teacher of literature and states his advantage as a teacher since he hated and feared
books while growing up. Graff discovered something that provided reading to be
more appealing. He engaged himself into the text where reading became fun.
Growing up Graff was raised in an ethnically mixed Chicago neighborhood where
he feared that if he had anything to do with books, he would get beaten up. Graff,
however, would sit down and try to read novels, but he could not relate to any of
the text, he would just stare blankly at the pages. Later Graff s fear developed into
flunking college. Graff then discovered a new way of reading finding a way to
make reading fun. Graff put himself into the text, a sense of personal engagement.
The main point in Graff s article is to read at an angle and keep an open mind
while being patient. Graff s goal throughout the article was to keep an open mind
while reading. In addition to reading with an angle, you can discover your way to
connect with the text while in doing so stay patient. While we read his article, we
