2. Geographical situation
Gibraltar is a British Overseas
Territory located on the
southern end of the Iberian
Peninsula at the entrance of
the Mediterranean. It has an
area of 6.8 square kilometers
and a northern border with
Andalusia, Spain.
4. Early history
Evidence of Neanderthal habitation in
Gibraltar from around 50,000 years ago
has been discovered at Gorham's Cave,
making Gibraltar the last known, holdout
of the Neanderthals. Within recorded
history, the first inhabitants were the
Phoenicians, around 950 BC.
In 1462 Gibraltar was captured by Juan
Alonso de Guzman, 1st duke of Medina
Sidonia. Who then sold it in 1474.
In 1501 Gibraltar passed back to the
Spanish crown.

5. History
In 1704, during the War of the Spanish
Succession, leading to a permanent
exodus of much of the existing
population. In 1713 Treaty of Utrecht
Gibraltar was ceded to Britain.

10. Over 500 different
species of flowering
plants grow on the
Rock. Gibraltar is the
only place in Europe
where the Gibraltar
candytuft found
growing in the wild.
Most of the rock’s
upper area is covered
by a nature reserve
which is home to
around 230 Barbary
Macaques.

12. Ethnic groups: the main ethic
groups, are the British (27%),
Spanish (24 %), Italy (20%)
Language: The official language
of Gibraltar is English. Though
the majority of the residents are
bilingual. The Gibraltarians often
converse in Llanito.
Religion: Approximately 78 % of
the Gibraltarians are Roman
Catholics. The second religion in
size is Islam (4% of population) *Llanito or Yanito (pronounced [jaˈnito]) is a form of Spanish
heavily laced with words from English and other languages,
such as Ligurian;
