An Urban Design Approach to a Sustainable Compact City in New Growth Potentia...drboon
Existence of Cities always depends on the region for the resources-land, food, water, energy or maybe cheap labor. The resource base is vital for the survival of the cities. With increasing urban sprawl there is a great impact on the future of cities and their sustenance. The primary intent of the study is to demonstrate an Urban Design approach towards a sustainable compact urban model in new growth potential areas (case of Cyberabad, Hyderabad, India) as a means to counteract city’s faceless sprawl and environmental degradation by generating compact high density, low energy, mixed-use living and integrating it with the existing city fabric reducing the ecological footprint for future generations. As the selected site offers good natural features, ecologically sensitive areas of the site i.e. Steep slope areas, catchment channels and climatically unsuitable areas from the open space system of the development. The sustainable compact city design approach balances the environmental loads and the growth of city saving resources, conserving energy and enhancing the quality of life.
The lecture presented at the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society at Oxford University, in June 2013, arguing the case for a 'clean, green, and smart' strategy of technological development, and a 'long and flat' strategy of physical development, for New Zealand's largest metropolitan area, Auckland.

EXPLORATION ON THE PREPARATION OF TOWNSHIP TERRITORIAL SPACE PLANNING IN THE ...civejjour
Since the Central Rural Work Conference in 2017 first proposed to take the road of socialist rural
revitalization with Chinese characteristics, all townships have been actively exploring the road of rural
revitalization that conforms to local characteristics. Right now, since February 2018, “Park City” has
been promoted, and a series of measures have been implemented, which are of great significance to the
sustainable development of urban and rural areas. It is of great strategic significance to explore a road to
rural revitalization under the background of park cities and to implement the construction and
implementation of township spaces.
The Anyue County Party Committee and County Government attaches great importance to it, actively
organizes, conducts in-depth research, and successfully completes the “Territorial spatial master planning
of Wenhua Town, Anyue County”, which not only aims to realize the formation of intensive and efficient
production space, moderate living space, and ecological space with beautiful scenery and safety. The
harmonious, open, efficient, attractive and quality territorial space pattern has laid a solid foundation for
the construction of a lemon culture agricultural tourism town, and also reflects the concept of some park
cities. This paper conducts research and discussion on its planning formulation, summarizes the
formulation of the existing township-level territorial space master planning, and puts forward some
innovative suggestions for rural revitalization in the context of park cities.

The Real and the Imagined Socially Responsible Real Estate in China - Context...STL Lab
The term “socially responsible real estate” in China lacks a clear definition. Its discourse orients towards physical and technological solutions, as seen from the “socially responsible real estate enterprise index” propagated by the central government. The 2015 China socially responsible real estate index (SRR) lists the "top 100 socially responsible real estate enterprises," including corporations such as Greenland, Country Green, Vanke, China Overseas etc. However, the most well-known SRRs represents a clear mismatch with the general public’s perception of the real estate industry. The SRR index embraces comprehensively the physical and technical measurements, but is weak on the social and cultural aspects. While the social impact of such index system becomes questionable, it remains unclear how it can guide the practice of socially responsible real estate development. The talk will review 3 real estate development cases at three different scales of development, representing three typical developmental models:
1. Large scale: SuZhou-Singapore Industrial Park (1994~) 200 square km by Suzhou government development corporation
2. Medium scale: Liangzhu New Village, Hangzhou (2003~) 6.7 square km by Vanke corporation
3. Small scale: Xiangshan Nanchang downtown renewal (undergoing), 10 hectors by Greenland
By mapping the objectives of key players (governments and developers), this talk aims to identify the value orientation of socially responsible real estate development in different social, economic, and geographic contexts. The meaning of SRR should be further developed and its operationalization should be customized to fit different geographical areas, lands use, and physical historical contexts across China. Ultimately, Chen’s research argues that a community based social value (i.e. community fatality) should be centralized on the value map of the socially responsible real estate in China.
Learning in Chinese Cities: Do Rural Migrants Benefit from Labor Market Agglo...STLLab
Cities facilitate learning and human capital accumulation. In a dense, local labor market, workers can benefit from knowledge spillovers and therefore enhance their productivity. This is supported by many empirical studies from developed countries. Less is known in cities in developing countries. Using micro data from the 2004 manufacturing census and 2005 population census in China, we find that overall workers benefit from labor market pooling and knowledge spillovers in Chinese cities but rural migrants benefit much less than do local urban residents. This is not because rural migrants are low skilled or work in informal sectors. This may be because they lack social network and suffer “double discrimination” for being “rural” and being “migrant.” Our findings suggest that social interactions in cities provide a channel of learning alternative to formal schooling. Our findings also have policy implications on how Chinese cities can become “skilled” during the rapid urbanization process coupled with global competition.
Justifying Chinese Local Government's Land Finance RegimeSTLLab
Land finance has been the engine of the booming Chinese economy for the last twenty years and also the root of the decline of economic growth. The nature of land finance is not revenue for local government. The nature of land finance is debts, and now the engine has stalled. Both increasing cost of land requisition and decreasing demand of property has lead land finance to its end. Since land finance is located in the core of Chinese economic growth, unless a replacement of it is identified, the Chinese economy will lose the dynamic growth of the last two decades. The problem is that we have not fully understood the economic functions of the land finance. However, dual economy theory may help us understand more and find a way out.
Behind the spectacular growth of China’s cities lies a potential fiscal crisis. It is unlikely that municipal governments can count on revenues from land leasing as a major, lasting source of finance. Many are under pressure to find alternative sources to finance urban development and infrastructure. This presentation will discuss a confluence of factors underlying the crisis, and explore the alternatives.
China's Housing Development Strategy in the New NormalSTLLab
As China has entered into a new development phase of "balanced transition" (also known as the "new normal"), the housing sector is facing tough challenges in maintaining the previous growth rate. In this turning point, the question of how to cultivate new development strategies for both the government and private sectors represents an urgent task. Dr. Shao's talk will focus on three issues:
1. How to understand the existing market situation;
2. How to evaluate housing policies; and
3. How to design a new strategy for stabilizing the real estate sector.

Investing In The US As A Canadian… And How To Do It RIGHT!! (feat. Erwin Szet...Volition Properties
=== Investing In The US As A Canadian… And How To Do It RIGHT!! (feat. Erwin Szeto) ===
Ever been curious about Real Estate Investing in the US?? At Volition, for the past 14 years, we have been focused on helping investors invest in over $250M of real estate and generate $100M of wealth in the Toronto market, but we are always open to learning more about other business models and learning from other investors.
The US has always been an intriguing market to invest in. But the US is a big place… if you’re interested in investing in the US, you probably have a lot of questions, like:
☑️ Specifically WHERE should you invest?
☑️ What are the best markets to invest in and why?
☑️ How much are property prices there?
☑️ What are the returns like?
☑️ What is cashflow like?
☑️ Compared to investing in Toronto or other cities in Ontario, what are the benefits / tradeoffs?
☑️ What ownership structure should I use?
☑️ What are the tax implications?
☑️ Can I get financing?
☑️ What are tenants like?
Enter Erwin Szeto, a longtime friend of Volition. Since 2005, Erwin Szeto and his team have navigated the challenging landscape of being landlords in Ontario. Now, they are shifting their focus and guiding their clients' investments toward the more landlord-friendly environment of the USA. This decision comes after assisting Canadian clients in transacting over $440,000,000 in income properties. Faced with issues like affordability constraints, tenant-friendly laws, rent control, and rental licensing in Canada, Erwin sees a clear opportunity in the U.S. Here, there is a significant influx of investments leading to the creation of high-paying manufacturing jobs. Erwin and his clients are poised to capitalize on these opportunities where landlord rights are stronger and there is no rent control.
To facilitate this transition, Erwin has partnered with and become a client of SHARE, a one-stop-shop U.S. Asset Manager. Founded by Canadians for Canadians, SHARE enables as passive an ownership experience as possible for landlords in the U.S., while still maintaining direct, 100% ownership.
