- This seminar will take your library out into the big wide school and beyond! It will give you practical ideas for involving and engaging those students and staff who “don’t come into the library”. Come prepared to share your own experiences and hopefully take away lots of ideas in return. I don’t profess to know it all. Lots of you will have similar or better ideas. The idea is to get us all thinking about how we can market our library and ourselves
- Introduce myself – first career in Advertising & Marketing – feel strongly that as libraries we have to “sell” ourselves and our service Mention Caroline Roche – Heart of the Library website and blog
- Firm belief that to become indispensable we must be a service that people cannot do without Easy to feel trapped in the library – if necessary close one breaktime a week so you can go to the staff room. Must be professional – write annual report telling SMT and governors what you do Keep statistics. Carry out self-evaluation. Feed into school paperwork.
- Easy to do what you want to do – and are good at – rather than what needs doing. Find something on SDP you can feed into – mine was “independent learning” and that enabled me to be seen seriously by the teaching staff. Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats. Concentrate on your strengths, look for opportunities, be aware of people to keep on the right side of!
- Uniquely placed to become indispensable in so many ways. As well as involving wider organisation in events, I am also Secretary of the Common Room and help out with bi-annual conference for all staff. Important for staff and pupils to think of you in a wider sense than the library. Think about your own organisation and who your audience are.

- The Pupils will form the largest part of the four quartiles BUT it is important to think about all your other users – they can help you raise the profile of the library and make it an essential part of the school.
- Sometimes the simple things work. It depends how often you already see pupils above Year 7. I have fought for years to get time with Yr 8 and 9 and have just had agreement for one lesson per term with 8 & 9. I am using it to promote reading but making it fun and relaxing. One fairly new Year 9 boarding pupil had obviously never been in the library. She was in a bottom set and admitted she didn’t like reading. At the end of the lesson she said, almost with awe, can I come in here any time I like ? She borrowed a book and has been a regular visitor since. She had been at the school for a term and never been in the library. Bribery – advertise you will be handing out chocolate one particular lunchtime to those “caught reading” – at least it takes you out of the library and makes it fun. This has caught on and SMT are now handing out spot merits for pupils caught reading.
- Tutor time reading & boxes – visit tutor groups Competitions – wider audience i.e. Art competitions, drama – storytelling, sport related activities Assemblies – I am regularly at assemblies giving out prizes, monitor badges etc. Also during book week each year – raises profile – get staff involved – WBD – A question of reading with pupils interviewing staff House events – Pupils are always pleased when you praise them for something you saw them do – i.e. House music drama or you heard about a sporting achievement. Make them realise you are more than just the book lady!
- Also LVS Literary Challenge during Book Week Involves lots of people who are not normally involved. Sixth form organise teams. Different staff judges for each assembly.
- Had to come to induction to get memory stick – worked very well! Questionnaire each year for sixth form – includes use of LRC, periodicals we get, resources used etc. Make sure I keep one study room sixth form only LRC Pupil Committee headed up by sixth form student.
- Explain situation at LVS – make all groups feel you have their interests at heart – despite day boarding Author visit – Kate Cann during book week for Carlsberg girls Story time every evening at 6pm
- We all hold Book Weeks so won’t go into detail but best opportunity of all to promote the library and reading. Does not have to be a huge event. Two or three high profile events during the week will make an impact. Example: my first year at LVS .... Ensure events not just library based but around the school.
- Staff helping with assemblies – Andy Towse PE teacher.
- Vital to be involved with Teaching and Learning to gain validity. Mention IL assessment INSET – i.e. On copyright etc. posters provided at printers too. LRC/Literacy Group – reps from all departments -
- 2 sets in Year 9 do second foreign language so the other 4 have an extra lesson per week for projects. I went with idea for them to research the country they were studying. Provide worksheets, checksheets, bibliography, mark scheme etc. Students assess their own IL skills at end of project.
- SMT like to add this sort of thing for school handbooks, inspection etc.!
- Mention DEAR, also interviews with staff from around the organisation Kitchen staff regularly use the library for fiction since interviewing them for the big read in NYR Staff book group includes staff from all areas. Email following book group meetings.
- Part of open days and evenings Invite PTA/Governors to an open session – tell them what you do Building Readers – letter to new yr 7 parents
- NYR – formed partnership with local public librarian. We have run competitions since 2008 – i.e. Travel writing – winners displayed in school and public library Yr 7 boarders to join library although no real benefit Yr 6 taster day – public library provides Summer Reading Challenge material for every child which we give out Inter school quiz for yr 7, our SLS provides questions. C/G conference Also BBA Local bookshop – use for bookfair – we use during Wbweek as brilliant at providing lots of the £1 books and really helpful. They offer us free authors and now are locally organising a children’s book festival Press coverage – through school or if necessary ring them yourself! Take pictures and send in.
