Objective
• Objective of this case study is to demonstrate capabilities of
GEO-DESIGNER, DFM Software for CASTINGS.
• Through DFM lots of time, effort, and material can be saved,
which eventually reduce product development cost.
• GEO-DESIGNER can help engineer to check various deign
concepts they have in their mind at the early stage of design
before go for full simulation.
• The DFM analysis takes approximately 5-10 minutes which
helps to validate your gating system before for full simulation.

MDI- Mass Distribution Index
Based on the change in MDI value, the circumference of the part gets
transparent. Finally it will show you the thick mass region in the casting
which likely to become a shrinkage porosity. It can be checked in part stage
itself.

Geo Designer is a quick up-front DFM
(Design For Manufacturing) Analysis
Tool in Cast Designer.
Mass Distribution Index (MDI)
Analysis. It is highly useful to find thick
region or high mass region in the part.
Normally, the high mass regions are
solidified in the last.
Mass of the part is calculated using Ray
method (360 degree).
MDI Results:
MDI 1.0 means regions with around
1.0mm thickness becomes transparent.
Regions above MDI 1.0 is highlighted in
corresponding colour in the colour bar.
By keep increasing the MDI value,
regions with highest mass / thickness
can be determined. These are generally
called as “Hot Spots”. These regions
normally create Shrinkage porosity in
the part.

– Found isolated regions in the casting geometry.
– Those identified regions compensated with higher modulus
riser/feeder geometries.
– Based on the MDI results the Riser/feeder geometry can be modified.
– Once the Riser/feeder geometries are corrected it can be go for
further Simulation process.

It is highly useful to find thick region or high mass region in the part. Normally, the high mass regions are solidified in the last. Mass of the part is calculated using Ray method (360 degree). MDI Results: MDI 1.0 means regions with around 1.0mm thickness becomes transparent. Regions above MDI 1.0 is highlighted in corresponding colour in the colour bar. By keep increasing the MDI value, regions with highest mass / thickness can be determined. These are generally called as “Hot Spots”. These regions normally create Shrinkage porosity in the part.
