The document analyzes the coursework production of a pop/country artist in relation to genre. To create a pop/country genre, the artist was dressed in a long white dress with country elements. A color scheme of pink, white, and grey was used, with pink representing pop, white representing purity, and grey as the background of a New York skyline. A serif font represented femininity and blonde hair and blue eyes created a stereotypical pop artist look. The New York skyline created ambiguity while being unstereotypical for a pop/country genre normally associated with R&B.
1. Section A: Theoretical Evaluation of Production
Analyse one of your coursework productions in relation to the concept of genre.
The main inspiration for my coursework was pop artists such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Maddi
Jane. Each artist uses both stereotypical and un-stereotypical concepts to represent their
individuality. For example, Taylor Swift is a pop artist however she is also a country singer, this is to
gain a wider fan base but also because it is from her roots as she grew up in the country. This is the
same for Miley Cyrus however she is a pop artist as well as a country and rock singer. Therefore I
decided for my artist I wanted to create the look of a pop/country genre as this was the main focus
for my music video. On my ancillary task I took the opportunity to create the ambience of my
pop/country genre, I did this by dressing my artist in a long white dress, this was a dress that had a
county essence to it therefore I think this worked well.
Another factor I used to create a pop/country essence isthe use of a colour scheme. For example, I
used grey, pink and white. I used pink to mainly represent the pop side of my genre; this is because
most conventional pop artists use the colour scheme of pink on their memorabilia. Therefore I
wanted to use the colour pink to create a stereotypical link to other pop artists in the industry. I used
white to represent purity and innocence within my artist. I used grey as the background which I used
consisted of grey as it is a picture of a New York skyline.
Also, I used a serif font to represent femininity within the artist, this is because I thought about what
my conventional audience would expect and used a serif font to suit this. My artist has blonde hair
and blue eyes I think this is stereotypical of a pop artist as most pop artists look like this. Therefore I
wanted to give my artist this look so that my album cover looked like a genuine pop cover. I used a
New York background to create ambiguity and mystery within my artist I also used it to create a un-
stereotypical view because a New York skyline would normally be associated with R&B music.
