Sex, Gender, And Sexuality
OBJECTIVES:
1. Differentiate sex, gender and sexuality
2. Contemplate about your own sexuality
and on the importance of appreciating
sexual diversity.
Definition of Terms:
SEX – Biological aspect of sex; male or female
Gender – Social interpretation of sex; masculinity;
femininity.
Sexuality – totality of our own experience of our sex
and gender
Sex chromosomes: Female (XX) Male (XY)
Intersex: Individual with composite genital
SEX
A biological sex or physical sex pertaining to identity
depending on your sexual anatomy and physiology – the
parts of your body are relevant to reproduction.
Typically determined by examining your own genitals
– external organs that are associated with reproduction
– the ability to produce offspring.
Hermaphroditism – Intersexuality (Have both
genitals)
GENDER
Male expected to be masculine while Female expected to
be feminine.
Gender Identity is how we see and experience ourselves as
a man, a woman, or neither.
Transgender wherein a person’s biological sex does not
align with one’s gender identity.
transgender man – not comfortable identifying as
woman.
transgender woman - not comfortable identifying as
man.
Sexual orientation
Aspect of our gender pertains to our emotional and
sexual attractions to a person.
According to psychological association of the Phil. Ages 6 to
8 are typically experience to develop attraction to other
people.
Our capacity for emotional and sexual attraction is diverse
and complex, but there are common terms for us to use.
Heterosexual (Straight) who are attracted to the opposite
sex.
Homosexual (Gay & Lesbian) who are attracted to the
same sex.
Bisexual (Bi) who are attracted to both sexes male or
female.
LGBT Refers to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Community.
SUMMARY
Complexities of human sexuality can be quite
overwhelming.
We need to look at our own experience on our journey of
discovering our sense of being a man and woman.
Baby is born and given an assigned sex based on it genitals,
but can partly change through time and in todays era are
acceptable.
