Gender Equality Essays
Crafting an essay on the subject of gender equality is a challenging endeavor that requires a
nuanced understanding of the complex issues surrounding this topic. The difficulty arises not
only from the need to delve into historical contexts, social constructs, and cultural nuances but
also from navigating the evolving landscape of gender dynamics in contemporary society.
One must meticulously research and analyze the historical roots of gender inequality, examining
how societal norms and structures have shaped and perpetuated disparities between genders.
Simultaneously, addressing the contemporary aspects of this issue involves staying abreast of
current events, ongoing debates, and legislative changes that impact gender equality.
Furthermore, the sensitivity of the topic demands a careful approach to ensure inclusivity and
respect for diverse perspectives. Balancing the exploration of challenges faced by different
genders, the strides made towards equality, and the ongoing struggles necessitates a keen
awareness of the multifaceted nature of gender issues.
In addition to the intellectual demands, the emotional aspect cannot be overlooked. The subject
of gender equality often elicits strong emotions, and navigating these sentiments requires a
delicate touch to maintain objectivity while acknowledging the human experiences at the heart
of the matter.
Writing an essay on gender equality, therefore, involves a dynamic interplay of research, critical
thinking, and empathy. It demands not only a grasp of the theoretical frameworks but also an
ability to convey the human stories that underscore the urgency of addressing gender disparities.
In conclusion, tackling the intricacies of gender equality in an essay requires a comprehensive
approach, involving historical, social, cultural, and emotional dimensions. It is a task that
demands intellectual rigor, a commitment to understanding diverse perspectives, and a delicate
balance between analysis and empathy.

The Awakening, by Kate Chopin
The Awakening is set in 1899, a time when the Industrial Revolution and the women
s movement were just beginning , conversely, still overshadowed by the attitudes of
society in the 19th century. Kate Chopin s idea that a woman s needs were
important was somewhat radical, especially since women were not considered to be
independent, and women s rights were still being fought for.Edna s major conflict is
her need for independence and personal fulfillment while still trying to conform to
her traditional upbringing. Edna is expected to be a perfect wifeand mother, both
while vacationing on Grand Isle and living in New Orleans. She is to be the social
hostess , wife and mother, all the while keeping house, maintaining order with the...

Edna s children are to be her true companion, above anything else she could ever
conceive of doing. Her social duties and pleasures must come second to her
responsibilities as a mother. A perfect example of this is when Leonce came home
from an evening at the men s club and after checking on the sleeping children.
Leonce came back to the bedroom where Edna was sleeping and stated to her that
one of the boys had a fever. Edna did not immediately jump up to check on the boy,
and even debated with her husband. Leonce reproached his wife for her
inattention, [and ] her habitual neglect of the children . He went on to state, If it
was not a mother s place to look after [the] children, whose on earth was it? Edna is
expected to be chaste, forthright and behave in an reserved manner. She is to
conduct herself and dress herself [and the children]according to custom. Many
times throughout my reading I noticed that she dressed for an early dinner or the
children were properly groomed, since it seemed to be a law of society that hair
must be parted and brushed . These restrictions were very troubling for Edna since
at heart she was a free spirit. During Edna s time on Grand Isle she learns about
freedom of expression from Adele, which ultimately leads Edna to reject the
subservient life she is living. Edna wants to be liberated from her previously formal
behavior and her repressed emotions and desires. From her friendship with Adele she

Understanding William Wordsworth s Imagination
The Romantic Movement of literature in England sparked a rapid change in the
common themes of writings produced by the nation s most renowned authors and
poets. Writers often explored more subjective topics such as the effect of nature on
the individual rather than the chemistry of the mind, a topic of greater importance to
philosophers of the Enlightenment. Onto the open stage of this newly flourishing
literary movement stepped William Wordsworth, at that time only a young man in
his twenties or thirties. Wordsworth would soon become a highly influential poet
in this literary era as well as during several political eras that occurred in his
lifetime both in England and the rest of Europe. His presence during such a lengthy
period of rapid change both in literature and other aspects of society made
Wordsworth more than just a great composer of verse. While his poems retain their
value as great reads to this day, Wordsworth serves as a portal into the thoughts of
people living in his time period. The subject matter of his poetry reveals what issues
held the most importance for writers and other citizens of England at the time and the
way in which contemporary politics may have affected writers including Wordsworth.
Munchausen Syndrome Analysis
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, ... is caused by a caregiver who uses various
techniques to induce symptoms in a child giving the child drugs, tampering with
medications, contaminating a feeding tube, or even smothering the child, for
example (Comer, 2014, p. 238). I assume that this diagnosis is psychologically
brought about. Something inside the brain of the person who is diagnosed with this
syndrome seeks a special kind of attention. I would almost view it as an addiction. In
ways they are craving this attention from medical professionals and peers. Also, the
Nemours Foundation claims that those diagnosed with Munchausen Syndrome by
Proxy are not only seeking attention, Some experts believe that it isn t just the
attention that s gained... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I now understand how crucial this diagnosis is. It is disturbing to know
that this is taking place more often today. From my perspective, I can t grasp how a
parent or guardian could treat their child like they are ill or enforce ill upon them.
However, I do believe it should be considered a psychological disorder. There are
many other mental illnesses that pose harm to people, yet they are viewed as
something that needs to be treated. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy should be
treated the same as any other mental
Description Of The Disorder. What If You Were Physically
Description of the Disorder What if you were physically paralyzed, conscious, and
unable to communicate? You would feel locked in, trapped in your body, constantly
searching for a way to communicate with the outside world. Locked in Syndrome is
a rare condition in which a patient is unable to produce any form of movement or
verbal communication. An individual with Locked in Syndrome (LIS) is affected by
tetraplegia, which is the partial or complete paralysis of the limbs in the human body
(Villines, 2015); an additional symptom includes anarthria, or the inability to
produce speech, which results from a loss of function in the speech muscles and a
difficulty articulating words (Vega, 2016). Patients affected by LIS are often
described as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A patient with classical LIS has the potential to improve dramatically over a
prolonged amount of time. In contrast, the recovery for patients with incomplete or
total LIS may take more time and appears more difficult to accomplish.
Symptoms of LIS are similar to those that occur during sleep paralysis; however,
LIS is not considered a transitional state between being awake and asleep. Some
characteristic of LIS include a difficulty breathing, and the inability to chew,
swallow, speak, and control movements in the lower area of the face. Locked in
Syndrome is not more prevalent in any age, race, nor gender. However, individuals
prone to stroke and traumatic brain injury victims are more likely to become locked
in. In addition, there is no standard course for this disorder; the development of LIS
is abrupt, rather than progressive, and diagnosis may take years.
Etiology and Associated Medical Information How can an individual be cognitively
locked in? Locked in Syndrome can be caused by poisoning, brainstem strokes,
infarctions, traumatic brain injuries, medication overdose, and progressive
neurodegenerative diseases. Common neurodegenerative diseases that may
potentially be affected by Locked in Syndrome (LIS) include: amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis, myelin loss, and the inflammation of nerves. LIS is often a result of
damage afflicted on the pons, an area on the brainstem in charge of sensory and
motor roles.
Mede Ancient Greek Misfortune Witten By Euripides
Medea is an ancient Greek misfortune Witten by Euripides. The play is based on
the myth of Jason and Medea and first produced in 431 BCE. Euripides was the
first Greek poet to suffer the fate of so many of the great modern writers: rejected
by most of his contemporaries. Euripides was the son of Mnesarchus. The family
owned property on the island of Salamis, and Euripideswas twice married and had
three sons. Euripides was well ahead of his time. He irritated people in his own day
by his harsh criticism and won only five dramatic prizes during the course of his
career. Euripides decision of women support characters such as the nurse and the
chorus is imperative to the magnification of Medeas feelings. The very fact that the
nurse and chorus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also give advice to Medea on how to get back at Jason. The chorus has Medea s
back and will always be there for her. The ending shows irony. Medea kills both of
her sons, as well as the killing of the princess and Kreon. After all the events she is
still pleased with herself. The plot of Medea is very straightforward, and happens
in a logical sequence. The thought of this plot can be expressed in a single
sentence: Medea s heart is destroyed by Jason when he marries another woman,
which leads her to seek revenge. In this play, characterization is the main focus, and
the characters are only a means of moving the plot forward. For example, Medea s
evil trait is developed through her resentful actions. Another element of theatre which
is demonstrated throughout the story is the use of elevated diction, which heightens
the emotions of the audience. Music, also an element of theatre, is used to
stimulate emotion as well. The main demonstration of this element is the Chorus,
which provides explanations and reviews on the action occurring. As all the events
of Medea s revenge progress, it is unclear how the conflict will be resolved. To end
the play, Euripides includes the final element of theatre: spectacle. Just when it
seems Medea has no escape from being punished, she appears in a chariot drawn by
dragons. This transpiration is considered a contrivance, as it is an unexpected and

Genie Wild Child
The Secret of Wild Child is an Emmy award winning documentary which talks about
a feral child Genie and how the affects of social isolation had severely damaged her
both physically and mentally.
Genie was 13 when she was discovered by social workers. She was kept chained to a
potty chair in her bedroom. She was abused by her parents so much that she
couldn t even learn to speak. She was made to sit alone every day and night. She
had no one to talk to and the girl when found by social workers gave an impression
of an infant. She was still in diapers when she was found.
Genie had a very awkward bunny walk and non human features. She used to sniff
and claw everything. She used to make noises as she couldn t speak and she was
abused by her parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genie was hence removed from Rigler s care and she was sent to her birth mother
who found it too difficult to handle her and hence Genie was moved from one foster
home to the other. This period was the beginning of an end for Genie as she was
abused regularly.
In 1975 came a shocker when Genie s birth mother sued the Riglers and the research
team charging them with excessive testing and exploiting the girl.
After the lawsuit, Genie was sent back to the Children s Hospital. Her condition had
worsened due to lack of care at foster homes. Unfortunately, the progressed that was
observed at the early stages of her treatment was nowhere to be seen now due to
subsequent treatment she received at the foster homes. Afraid of being abused again
for opening her mouth, Genie had turned back to being silent.
In Genie s case, sometimes her interest came second to interests of the scientists. In
her case, to make matters worse, one man played the role of psychologist and
scientist.
Hence we can conclude that even though Genie showed signs of doing the
impossible by turning her life of social isolation around, she was unable to achieve
this feat in the end all because of involvement of the legal authorities and the lawsuits
and the greed that the team had developed to become famous and make a name for
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation (ADHD)
A disability that many people are faced with is ADHD. ADHD is usually developed
as a child and some people have it forever while others it could last until they are
adults. People who have it tend to talk too much, affects their behavior, forgets or lose
things, has a hard time getting along with people, and falls into temptation easily
(CDC). Determining what your symptoms are can help you figure out what type of
ADHD you might have. There are three different types of ADHD and they are
predominantly inattentive Presentation, predominantly hyperactive impulsive
presentation, and combined type. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation is when
someone has a difficult time completing a task or following directions and are too
distracted to remember their daily routines. Predominantly Hyperactive Impulsive
Presentation is when someone is fidgety, talks a lot, can t sit still and may injure self
or others by the behavior. Combination type is when you have Predominantly

I also thought that this disability was something that someone would have to live
with for the rest of their lives, but now I know that if someone who has it there is a
small chance that the disability sympthoms will decrease over time. I went to high
school with a kid who had ADHD and I saw that it was very hard for them to get
close to anyone and they had a hard time focusing while in class. There were many
children in my class that had other disabilities and my school made smaller classes
for all the children with disabilities they taught them the material at a slow pace and
they would give them extra time on tests. When having a disability, I think the
hardest thing to do is to go to school and I think that really affects a child s
development. It affects their learning, makes it hard to make friends, and some
people bully children with

The Merchant of Venice
The Merchant of Venice
The Merchant of Venice was written in 1598 by William Shakespeare. The story is
set in Elizabethan times, which was the sixteenth century. People back then were
quite prejudiced towards any race that was not Christian. They would have hated
Jews. When Shylock would come onto the stage, the audience would have just booed
him back off. The Christians had their reasons for hating the Jews. The fact that they
supposedly killed Jesus still angers many people today. Christians were resentful of
their wealth. Jews were very successful with their businesses. You could say that the
Christians were experiencing Xenophobia, fear of foreigners. They feared that they
would take over their land. So when Shylock comes to act, ... Show more content on

The audience would feel some sort of pity for him when Antonio says, I m like to
kick you again! On the other hand the Elizabethan audience members might go up on
stage and give him a pat on the back.
When the court scene begins, Shylock is not anywhere to be seen nor is Antonio,
the supposed victim of his. The duke is there who is supposed to be the master of
ceremonies. One thing that you should know is that Antonio and the Duke are
good friends, which puts Shylock in a bad position right away as the man who
decides his fate is biased towards Antonio, meaning that he is in favour of helping
out Antonio. The Duke says to Antonio, I m Sorry for Thee. You can see that
Shylock will have his work cut out for him. The court rooms are a place of justice,
the duke should not even think to be biased. They describe Shylock as, stony, cold
and inhuman. They say that he is incapable of pity. He is at the bottom of the chain
of beings, below animals. You can see that Shylock is being criticised in his
absence. The Christians who are in the court at the moment refer to him as The Jew.
He is nameless to these people. He is portrayed, through their use of language, as a
stone cold villain.
After much criticism and behind his back abuse, Shylock comes in. His entry is
quite dramatic in the way of what he brings in with him. It shows his cold side, and
The Role Of Finance Departments For Training Future Ceos
Finance Departments for Training Future CEOs
In light of involvement with the department of finance, a CFO presents a conceivably
effective CEO for tending to the requirements of the corporation. CFOs perform focal
roles in organizations. In any case, these roles are centered predominantly on the
finance related viewpoint. The duties of the finance section areto make choices on the
activities to be executed within the corporation. This office is also vital in dictating
authoritative administration, hierarchical culture and general authoritative operation
(Kim Zhang, 2011). Subsequently, the office can be a proper place to train CEOs
and since CFOs are the senior employees in this department, their role is suitable for
nurturing CEOs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The responsibilities that a CFO has and thus the qualities that are required of them
are both relevant in dispensing the duties of a chief executive officer. For instance,
it is the duty of the finance division to control profit and loss. If a chief financial
officer is able to effectively turn a firm from making losses to making profits, then
it is likely that the CFO will be adequate for overseeing the entire firm in the role of
the chief executive officer. The department of finance also has many employees
working under the chief financial officer. A CFO who is capable of managing the
employees under them properly is a good candidate for the company s top
job(Fabich et al., 2012).Examples of CEOs with a background in finance are
Charles L Szews of Oshkosh and Patricia Woertz of Archer Daniels Midland.
Pros Cons of Hiring a CFO to be a CEO There are several benefits that comes with
enlisting a CFO for the role of the chief executive officer. One such benefit is the
assurance of broad, specific and reasonable in financial control and initiatives. The
firm can be sure that the budgeting within the firm is top notch since the CEO has
experiencing in those matters. The allocation of funds for various activities in the
firm is crucial for the growth of the firm(Kim Zhang, 2011). The skills and
knowledge possessed by CFOs can be utilized to ensure optimum allocation. Thus, a
chief financial officer presents appealing candidacy for CEO. A CFO
The Color Purple as a Parable
The Color Purple Parable
According to Scholl s article, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, is a parable. In
classifying a story as a parable, Scholl determines that a parable must be a movement
through a realistically improbable sequence of narrative reversals toward a conclusion
that defies realistic expectations. (Scholl, 255) These reversals are very evident
throughout the novel and render the conclusion unrealistic. In almost every character,
there is an ironic reversal of what should happen and what does happen.
With the main character Celie, she overcomes her hardships with her childhood and
marriage to achieve complete happiness. Her childhood consists of a father that rapes
her and gives her kids away. He also gives her ... Show more content on

This reversal from a sure bleak and meaningless life to one of total happiness is a
direct contradiction to the social norm of what the reader would assume.
Shug Avery also has a reversal in character. At first she is presented as an ungodly
woman who sings in bars. She had become a smoker and an alcoholic, who had
slept with a lot of men and is said to possibly have some unclean disease. Shug had
become very sickly when she met Celie. By the end of the novel, she returns to the
church and also goes back to her father, who had exiled her from the family. She too
had achieved total happiness through Celie.
Other reversals happen with Harpo (Celie s brother in law), Sophia, and Squeak.
Harpo and Sophia marry, but Sophia doesn t listen to Harpo like he feels a woman
should, so he beats her. Sophia ends up leaving Harpo and has a fight with his new
girlfriend Squeak. The reversal comes at the end of the novel when Squeak
incorporates total trust in Sophia as her loyal friend and keeper of her kids, while she
pursues singing.
Sophia s reversal deals with the race controversy in the deep South. Whites were of
course considered dominant and ruled the blacks. Sophia was originally put in jail
for hitting the Mayor. She got out ofjail on an agreement to be the Mayor s family
servant. According to social standards, Sophia was supposed to be dependent on her
employers. However by the end, the Mayor s family was dependent

For organizational change management, various models have been presented, and I
probably chose following three most prominent ones in this regard:
John Kotter : Eight steps to transforming an organization (Kotter s, 1995)
This model, created by Harvard University Professor John Kotter s, causes change to
become a campaign. Employees buy into the change after leaders convince them of
the urgent need for change to occur.

Banning Concealed Carry
There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding
1,870 (MST). Guns are not a bad thing, it s the people carrying them. That is why I
think there should be Gun control that does not abuse the power of the rightfully
armed. Stronger regulations are okay, but they should not violate the Second
Amendment. All states should have carry laws allowing concealed carry in all states,
while banning open carryof guns. Why should open carry should be banned?
Because it could be considered flourishing a gun. For example, Texas is now
allowing open carry. Patrik Jonsson, a staff writer at Student Issue Research (SIR),
reports that Police are discouraged from even asking about someone s holstered gun.
If they do,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Open carry should be banned in all states because you re practically flourishing
your gun for everyone, including criminals, to see all the time. With concealed
carry, you re required to provide a permit showing you are legally carrying,
However, with open carry an officer can walk up and ask for your gun permit, but
can do little if they refuse. Open carry could allow a mass murderer or a terrorist to
walk in public with a weapon and gather little suspicion from nearby people.
Concealed carry is not visible to others. In a state with open carry, your gun could
be snatched out of a open holster. In a state that allows concealed carry, who s
going to know you have a gun? Guns are weapons of self defense, not toys to
flourish to the public eye. Guns don t kill people, people kill people. This is why
we should have tighter regulations on guns. Again, my opinion is that concealed
carry should be allowed in all states. In addition, all states should have carry rules
and open carry should be banned. We can try stop mass shootings, but not by
restricting the average person s gun rights. We can stop some of the killing, but let s
not make the righteous
In This Essay, I Will Examine Social Contract Theory And
In this essay, I will examine social contract theory and explain the perspectives of
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. From there, I will explore Dostoyevsky s poem,
Grand Inquisitor, and conduct an analysis of the relationships between the Grand
Inquisitor and his subjects as well as Jesus and his followers. After, I will draw
parallels associating The Grand Inquisitor s relationship to his subjects with Thomas

relationship to his followers with a Lockean perspective on social contract theory.
Finally, I will synthesize my findings and draw conclusions regarding the
omnipresence of elite herd models in political and religious institutions. Social

This prompts a societal condition of war. The need to control the evil, malicious, and
unreasonable masses becomes the center theme for Leviathan; a goal of which
Hobbes accomplishes through the advocacy of absolute monarchy. Contrarily, John
Locke presents a far more optimistic worldview concerning the human condition and
Social Contract Theory. In his work Second Treatise of Government, Locke is
quoted, Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life,
health, liberty, or possessions (Second Treatise of Government, II). In writing, Locke
establishes that people in their natural state ( all equal and independent ) shall refrain
from interfering on another individuals natural rights (life, liberty, and right to pursue
property). Locke s underlying premise in his political theory is that humans have
inherent knowledge of natural law what is right and wrong. According to Locke,
humans have enough knowledge of these ethics to resolve conflicts without need for
an omnipresent and conspicuous social contract. The Social Contract still exists but
merely in a judicial manner; Hobbes respects individuals rights to maintain peace
and order. However, should individuals breech their respect knowledge of natural
law, and good and evil, Locke s Social Contract provides justice.

Sri Lanka s Continual Civil War
Sri Lanka s Continual Civil War The ethnic tension between Sri Lanka s majority
and minority populations, the Sinhalese who are mostly Buddhists being the
majority and the minority being mostly Hindu and are called Tamil, has been going
on for many of years. Finally in 1983 the ethnic tensions finally spilled over into civil
war. The civil war has been mostly between the government of Sri Lanka and the
militant organization called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The LTTE are
fighting for an independent Tamil state called, Tamil Eelam. The government of Sri
Lanka has relied heavily on two of the four faces of power and those two would be

Not only did this hurt civilians but it also affected the Sri Lankan economy
negatively. With a sizeable amount of money coming into the country through
tourism, having eight planes destroyed is not good for business. This definitely
cost the Sri Lankan government hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars.
Since 1980 the LTTE has carried out more than 200 suicide bombing attacks which
goes to show the morale and passion these people have for creating their own state
and punishing Sri Lanka in order to do so. Force and persuasion are the two
dominant faces of power used by the Sri Lankan government while trying to get
under control the LTTE and finally end their ongoing civil war. On the other hand,
the LTTE has predominately used punishment against the government of Sri Lanka
to try and get the outcome they would most prefer, a Tamil Eelam state. While
these faces of power seem to have been used effectively in some small isolated
occasions, in order for this seemingly never ending civil war to finally come to a
halt, one side is going to have to give a little more than they are right now. Until
either side uses a face of power more effectively in getting the other side to do what
they do not want, the civil war will quietly continue.

The Getty Museum Is Absolutely Breathtaking
Part I: The Getty museum is absolutely breathtaking. When you step off the tram
you are surrounded by white marble and stone above the hectic LA area. The all
white buildings allow for a clean slated mindset where you are able to open your
mind the the pieces within. It sits above the greater Los Angeles area. There are
several buildings in which the collections are located, each being two stories. The
space contributes significantly to the art in that it allows you to have a clear clean
palette in your mind to view the art. With each room being dedicated to a specific
time period, it allows one to really move through time and witness the changes that art
went through in each time period but also from region to region. There are three...

It as well is in an ellipses shape where it is in an oval shape filling most of the
canvas. This piece has a very dark atmosphere, as the only highlighted images are
that of Christ and and the adulteress. There are people surrounding them all dressed
in greys and greens. Jesus is dressed in an ivory which is a color in which people of
importance often wore. The adultress life drained body is looking down towards
her exposed breasts as she comes to understand her fate. This painting conveys the
emotion of a bible story about Jesus forgiving an adulteress. The emotions run very
high as the individual s facial expressions are locked in surprise and anger. Anger
towards the woman and utter shock as to Jesus forgiveness and compassionate heart
towards her. Showing Christ bending down to write in the sand as the pharisees
behind him are appalled at what he has to say. He who does not sin may throw the
first stone John 8:7. This reflects reaction to Mannerism, but also the social turmoil of
the time. According to the Council of Trent and the Catholic church artworks should
be a clear, intelligible subject realistically interpreted in order to stimulate piety. This
was part of the reason that the artwork turned towards naturalism, becoming
emotionally engaging and intense. This is similar to a renaissance painting The Rest
on the Flight into Egypt with St. John the baptist by Fra Bartolommeo composed
about 1509. This piece on the contrary is
The 5 Giant Evils Of William Beveridge s Five Giant Evils
William Beveridge and the Five Giant Evils William Beveridge was part of the war
time government, after world war two he was tasked with the job of putting in
place a framework for the welfare state. The aim of the report was to find out what
Britain needed to take care of the basic needs of all the people and to begin to put
in place a set of reforms to give every citizen of Britain a basic standard of living.
Published in 1942 the Report proposed a new social security system that would
provide benefits from the cradle to the grave this would include in ideally a system
of proper healthcare, sickness and unemployment benefits, family allowance and
an employment policy. As well as this, the report would outline how best to tackle
the five giant evils, Beveridge believed that these issues were what was standing in
the way of social progress for post war Britain. Citizens were more open to
government intervention in relation to social welfare due to their increased
involvement for the duration of the war, individuals became accustomed to higher
taxation to help cover medical costs and services for people who had been injured
by bombing and air raids. This example of free health care paved the way for
creation to the NHS and made individuals more aware of the benefits of free health
care. Also, due to the mixing of social classes during the second world war on the
battle field and on the home front, as well as shared experiences under a common
enemy many British people
Stephen Leacock
Stephen Leacock
Born in Swanmore, England, Stephen Leacock was one of 11 children of an
unsuccessful farmer and an ambitious mother, a woman to whom Leacock no doubt
owed his energetic and status conscious nature. In 1891, while teaching at the
prestigious Upper Canada College in Toronto, Leacock obtained a modern language
degree from the University of Toronto. In 1903, after receiving a Ph.D. in political
economy from the University of Chicago, he joined the staff of McGill University,
Montreal, as professor of politics and economics. Leacock s career as a humorist
began when he had some comic pieces published as Literary Lapses in 1910. This
successful book was followed by two more books of comic sketches, Nonsense

The son who wandered forth in the world was either killed by the cannibals or
crawled home years afterwards doubled up with rheumatism. So the old men made
the proverb. But nowadays it is exactly wrong. It is the rolling stone that gathers the
moss. It is the ambitious boy from Honkville, Indiana, who trudges off to the city
leaving his elder brother in the barnyard and who later makes a fortune and founds
a university. While his elder brother still has only the old farm with three cows and
a couple of pigs, he has a whole department of agriculture with great sheds full of
Tamworth hogs and a professor to every six of them.
In short, in modern life it is the rolling stone that gathers the moss. And the geologists
outside of Tennessee say that the moss on the actual stone was first started in exactly
the same way. It was the rolling of the stone that smashed up the earth and made the
moss grow.
Take another proverb:
All is not Gold that Glitters
How perfectly ridiculous! Everybody in the days in which we live knows even a
child knows that all is gold that glitters. Put on clothes enough, appearance enough
and you will be accepted anywhere. Just do a little glittering and everybody will
think you are gold. Make a show, be a humbug, and you will succeed so fast that
presently, being very wealthy and prominent, you will really think yourself a person
of great merit and intellect. In other words, the glitter makes the gold. That is all
there is to it.
Analysis Of Blue-Collar Billiance By Mike Rose
Every contemporary society endures a division among the people, whether it s
because of social, financial, or political reasons. Mike Rose, the author of Blue
Collar Brilliance, is a professor at UCLA and an outspoken contributor on the
topics of literacy. Furthermore, Blue Collar Brilliance was published in a
prestigious magazine, American Scholar, in 2009. As the storyline of the article
revolves around the working American class, Rose writes it as a rebuttal to
misconceptions that people who are on a higher social ladder hold. What Rose
tries to convey in his article is that blue collar jobs are much more complex than
just its physical component. In his article, Rose utilized various strategies to
effectively attempt to persuade his readers through his personal experiences. The
article is rhetorically effective because it encompasses a variety of emotional
appeals, and successfully exhibits its logical aspect of arguments to establish a
connection between the past, and the contemporary belief regarding the blue collar
jobs. First, in his text, Rose effectively uses his personal experiences as a
foundation for his claims to conceive the emotion of compassion towards the blue
collar workers, as well as establish an understanding of the complexity of such jobs.
Rose writes about his family members, and attempts to achieve a much deeper
connection with his readers who might even relate to his own experience. Rose
reveals some of his memories by saying, Rosie took
Analysis Of Inside Out
Abstract This paper explores the development of Riley Andersen, the 11 year old
protagonist in the Walt Disney Studios film Inside Out. When Riley is forced to
move to San Francisco with her family, viewers witness her struggle to work though
her developmental tasks and her psychosocial crisis. Although she had once been
successful in her stages of development, her transition to a new home and a new
school negatively impacts her emotions and causes a regression in her developmental
tasks. With the support of her family and increased emotional maturity, she is able to
successfully overcome her developmental obstacles. Throughout this paper, the
principles and concepts of the psychosocial theory are discussed in relation to Riley s

The film ends with a now 12 year old Riley adapting well to life in San Francisco,
making new friends, and leading a more emotionally complex life. Psychosocial
Theory of Development In analyzing Riley Andersen through the psychosocial
theory of development, it is important to understand what is going on in her life
throughout the events of the film. The psychosocial theory addresses growth
across the life span, identifying and differentiating central issues from infancy to
elderhood (Newman Newman, 2014, p. 62). In the beginning of the film, Riley is
11 years old and is in the Middle Childhood life stage (6 12 years old). The
developmental tasks during this stage include friendship, concrete operations, skill
learning, self evaluation, and team play (Newman Newman, 2014). As seen in the
film, Riley is a social child with many friends while living in Minnesota. She is a
successful member of a hockey team, and is able to relate to others in a positive
manner. It appears that Riley has successfully accomplished the developmental tasks
associated with Middle Childhood. When Riley moves to San Francisco, she is
forced to restart these developmental tasks with a brand new group of peers.
Although she tries to connect with other students in her new classroom, she struggles
with making friends and can only think of getting back to her old friends in
Minnesota. She also
Kent State Shooting In The Vietnam War
During war, chaos occurs when there is conflict between the people and the authority
of a country. The Vietnam War was a time of extreme disagreement between the
government and the people. People of the United States did not want to be involved
in the Vietnam war and felt very passionate about this. On May 4, 1970 students at
Kent State protested the war. Feeling that the protest was becoming wild, the
National Guard was called in. The protest did not die down, so the soldiers shot
about fifteen people. Four students were killed and at least nine were injured. This
shooting caused a great quantity of chaos and argument among the people,
government, and media. All three have different views of what took place. The

The National Guard claims that their actions were to end the chaos of the protest. A
website states, Outraged over the use of tear gas, the beatings, and the bayoneting,
the students conducted another rally on Monday. Forty minutes later, they opened
fire on the crowd of students in a thirteen second sustained volley in which at least
sixty seven rounds were fired. Four students were killed, and nine were wounded (
Kent State Shootings ). The shootings were just from the National Guard s
perspective because the crowd was very rowdy and the senior chief thought it was
the proper action to take. Also, the National Guard easily could have taken out the
entire crowd, but only shot a few that they thought were necessary. An article says,
Four students at Kent State University, two of them women, were shot to death this
afternoon by a volley of National Guard gunfire. At least 8 other students were
wounded ( 4 Kent State Students Killed by Troops ). They injured a total of at least
twelve students out of the many protestors. This they felt was a very reasonable act
for the situation. The government believes the shootings are a very just action,

Analysis Of Happy Days And The Carmichael Show
SACE Stage 2 English: External Assessment: Comparative Analysis
Happy Days and The Carmichael Show
Sitcoms have existed ever since television was introduced to the family home, and
continue to evolve along with television and society itself. Traditionally, sitcoms were
centred around men, usually having only one or two female characters, however over
time, societal changes and movements have drastically changed the way sitcoms have
been presented to the public. Happy Days was produced in the 1970s; portraying the
traditional 50s white American family. The 50s were a time recognised for being post
World War II, the beginning desegregation, the rise of Rock N Roll as well as a
widespread sense of stability, contentment and consensus. The ... Show more content

Each of the sitcoms both have easily identifiable sets, such as the Cunningham
home or diner in Happy Days or The Carmichael home in The Carmichael Show.
These sets work in conjunction with a catchy theme song that allows viewers to
instantly recognise the sitcom that is playing. Each of the episodes are self
contained, meaning that the sitcoms had moved from conflict to resolution by the
end of each episode. Humour plays a key role in the sitcoms, this humour is
mostly character driven; one liners at another character s expense. Occasionally,
there will be running jokes concerning a character s personality, flaws or
disposition. Each of these sitcoms also presents certain character archetypes.
These include the wise cracker, the bully/charmer, dork, goofball and the square.
The wise cracker is someone that lives to make fun of the other characters on the
show; this archetype can be related to Jerrod from The Carmichael Show and
Howard Cunningham from Happy Days. The bully/charmer has a rough exterior
although they are generally good natured at the core; this relates to Fonzie and
Bobby s ex wife Nekeisha. The square is typically the main protagonist of the
sitcom, this individual is slightly nerdy and a lot of the sitcoms comedy comes from
how they react to certain situations. Maxine is the square, as a result of her very
wealthy background she frequently acts out in
Traditional Terrorists
Terrorists
When I think of the word terrorism, the first thing that pops into my mind is 9/11. A
day I will never forget, as I am sure countless other Americans will not as well. I
never took the time to truly think about a terrorist, what they are thinking, what their
motives are, or whom they are trying to hurt or even why they are terrorist. In doing
this research, I have acquired knowledge about not only the traditional terrorist but
also the cyberterrorist. In some ways these criminals are similar, and the reasons
behinds their actions sometimes overlap, yet they also are different. Although some
people, including myself, could get the two of them confused, they are not the same.
In looking at both a traditional terrorist and a cyberterrorist, a clear definition is not
universal which could account for the reason that some people get them confused or
overlap them. Once cyberterrorism terms are determinable, we would have a clear
view on how to deal with such malicious acts. The only way to avoid that ... Show

Internet to help commit or assist with the crime, they physically do the damage.
Cyberterrorist destroy their targets as well, they just do through the Internet. One
primary difference between a cyberterrorist and a traditional terrorist is that the
former would have a sophisticated knowledge of hacking and information
technology vulnerabilities or would have the funds to employ people skilled in those
areas (Poremba, 2011). Cyberterrorist are smart individuals, they have the knowledge

The Energy Development Of Greening Energy Sector
Greening energy sector in India has started through the implementation of various
policies and acts in energy sector. The electricity Act which was enforced in 2003 for
the generation of renewable energy, providing sufficient support and facilitating its
purchase was the first formal process in promoting clean energy (solar energyin
India). Other energy policies and acts like National Tariff policy 2006, National rural
electrification policies 2006 and semiconductor policy 2007 have provided ground for
the establishment of standalone off grid renewable energyand also subsidised
manufacturing of solar panels (solar energy in India).
The installed capacity of solar power plant which was 161 MW in 2010 increased
up to 4097 MW till July 2015 (Phillips, 2014).During the year 2014 2015, there has
been 42 % increase in the solar power installed capacity adding up 1112 MW in the
renewable energy pool (Power brochure India). Recently on August 2015, India has
turned The Cochin International Airport into entirely solar powered airport
producing 48 KWh of energy which is assumed to save 300,000 tons of Equivalent
carbon in the next 25 years (Greenberg, 2015). This has been considered as a great
achievement in clean energy development in India and around world. Madhya
Pradesh, Gujrat, Rajasthan, are the leading states in solar energy production in India.
With the aim to reduce the dependency in conventional fuel, Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched the programme

Catch 22 Themes
In Joseph Heller s satirical novel Catch 22, Yossorian, an American bombardier
soldier in World War II, is stationed on an island off the coast of Italy with his fellow
comrades. Everyone there is frustrated and upset as most of them have completed the
amount of missions that are needed to be sent back home, but catch 22is a law that is
interpreted different ways throughout the book that ultimately is there to keep
soldiers from going on leave. The war gradually takes a severe toll on Yossorian,
especially when his friend Nately is killed in combat. After this, Yossorian refuses
to fly anymore missions and gets caught in Rome illegally. With this, the officers
over Yossorian give him two choices: be court martialed or receive an honorable
discharge by voicing his approval of raising the amount of missions to eighty
before a soldier can be sent home. Yossorian, however, had other plans as he
decides to get away from the catch 22 once and for all by escaping to neutral
country of Sweden to take control of his life once again. There are many different
elements that Joseph Heller utilizes to portray the horrors of war such as the
characterization of Yossorian, the characterization of Milo Minderbinder, and the
theme of the absurdity of war presented throughout the novel. Unlike many other
characters in the book, Yossorian is characterized as a realist who sees all the horrors
of the war when many others cannot. This is portrayed in a conversation between

Compare And Contrast How To Date A Brown Girl
Stereotypes and Expectations
How to date a brown girl (black girl, white girl, or halfie) and Girl are both an
extreme representation of what life was and sometimes still is for many women.
They re both based on a standardized conception of how women should act towards
society. Even though these two stories have similar messages, the points of view
from where each story is told are different. How to date a brown girl is narrated by a
teenager who believes is experienced with girls from all types of ethnicities. Girl
seems to be a story of a mother trying to help her daughter by telling her how she s
supposed to behave. Besides the confident, self assured tones in both narrators, the
expectations that society places on women are the true similarities shared between
these two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, in the same way these stories are assimilated to each other, they also
have their differences. These two stories differ in the perspective from where each
story is told. One side tries to enforce rules and create barriers, whereas the other
side is the reaction to the results of these rules and barriers, which later lead
towards expectations of certain behaviors. The mother in Girl speaks as if she has
been accustomed to living this way all her life and, according to her, its how her
daughter should live also. Each family has different rules depending on their
ethnicity. Most parents raise their daughters with the rules their own parents made
them believe in, which in the end just creates stereotypes for others to use. In How
to date a brown girl , the teenage boy uses this all through the story by speaking in a
self assured and experienced way, as if he knows these girls because of the existing
stereotypes. While one story encourages a specific behavior on a girl, the other story
takes advantage of this repeatedly seen behavior in order to get what he wants from

Clopidogrel can be prescribed prophylactically to high risk patients or to those who
have experienced atherothrombotic events such as strokes, acute coronary syndrome,
peripheral arterial diseases or any other thrombi producing illnesses (Cheek, 2013).
Clopidogrel works by inhibiting the binding of adenosine diphosphate to platelet
receptors, thus, disrupting the process of platelet formation and preventing platelet
aggregation and thrombi formation. However, in order to inhibit the binding of
ADP, clopidogrel has to be converted to its active form by the enzyme CYP2C19*1.
Unfortunately, some people have lost the ability to produce enzyme CYP2C19*1 and
instead produce a variant form known as CYP2C19*2. CYP2C19*2 cannot convert
clopidogrel to its active form, making clopidogrel useless in patients who carry gene
CYP2C19*2. Providentially, pharmacogenomics can identify variant genes with
DNA sequencing prior to prescribing medications in order to assure the effectiveness
of pharmacologic therapy. This also helps health care providers to prescribe alternate
medications when appropriate. Other drugs of research include the anticoagulant
warfarin, the antiretroviral agent abacavir, and the antibody trastuzumab. All these
drugs have genetic variant forms that can affect the effectiveness of pharmacological
therapy. Warfarin is a vitamin K antagonist used to prevent thromboembolic disorders.

Bridging the Gap: Developing Computational Models of PD Subtypes and
Progression Models for Clinical Research
Rationale and Impact:
Developing data science code for use in clinical research is limited. Computational
researchers either develop black box methods for general use or specific models to
answer a particular scientific question. Development of models into a useable clinical
research tool is unusual. Many codes are, at best, uploaded to a software repository
online, like GitHub. At this point, the computational researchers would usually move
on to the next project and the model would not have any clinical impact. While it is

How We Waste Power and Carbon Dioxide
Did you know that lighting a typical office overnight wastes enough energy to heat
water for one thousand cups of tea (Climate Care.org). This is only one of many
examples of how we waste power and Carbon dioxide. Almost everything we do
releases carbon dioxide emissions, and in different amounts. We can save money
and CO2 by reducing our carbon footprints, which is the total quantity of greenhouse
gases that someone produces. Although we don t think about them very often, a
carbon footprint is part of everyone s life because it s measured on things we use,
our actions create and waste CO2, and several people have worked to find energy
saving ways to reduce them and help the environment.
A carbon footprint is measured by using several different variables about someone s
lifestyle. It s important to note that depending on where someone may live influences
their impact on their carbon footprint. Just as Stephanie Pappas mentioned; In
California, for example, electricity generation is relatively climate friendly, so
focusing on vehicular emissions has a greater impact . Using an online calculator can
show anyone how much CO2 they use on average, by answering the questions
provided. Inevitably, in going about our daily lives commuting, sheltering our
families, eating each of us contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions that are
causing climate change (Nature.org). Basically, determining your carbon footprint is

The Main Causes Of Selfies
Did you ever know that taking too many selfies could kill you? According to
Robinson (2014), He told the Sunday Mirror: I was constantly in search of taking
the perfect selfie and when I realised I couldn t I wanted to die (para. 7). Selfie, as
defined in the dictionary, is an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital
camera especially for posting on social networks (Selfie, 2002). But why can it kill
you? This is because people today, especially teenagers, are addicted to taking
selfies every day, considering that this is already a popular trend. Most teenagers
would take selfies every now and then because of vanity and perfectionism. This is
why some teenagers or even adults go to extremes, like committing suicidebecause
they cannot get the perfect shot they wanted. According to Sanghani (2014), most...

The first main cause is vanity. People would not want to take a lot of selfies if they
were not that vain; they would only do such if they were that much proud of
themselves. People sometimes feel that they have a better appearance or a better
pose compared to others, this is why they would take a lot of selfies and post those
all over the Internet. The second main cause is the influence around. A lot of
people, especially teenagers, are influenced by this trend. They might not like to
take a lot of selfies, but because people who almost always take selfies from
wherever surround them, they too are now being influenced and tempted to do
such. The third and last main cause is social networks. It is because of these social
sites, like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that give a reason to people to take
selfies; to post those pictures online. People nowadays post their selfies almost
every day on these social sites, some people would even post their selfies online
every hour; people become very much vain because of social
Drywall
A hole in drywall may appear to many people to be difficult to repair, but in reality
it is a simple fix that the majority of homeowners can repair themselves. The repair
technique outlined in this article takes a few hours, but if done correctly will
leave you with a flat, seamless wall. There are seven steps that you should follow in
order to achieve a great repair on your drywall. 1. Mark off the area to be patched.
Use a square to mark off an area slightly larger than the hole that you are repairing. 2.
Using a drywall knife, cut around the four sides that you have already marked off,
leaving you with a square hole in the wall. 3. Prepare a piece of wood to reinforce the
patch. To do this, cut a thin strip of 1x2 or 1x4 slightly larger... Show more content on

Spread a thin coat of joint compound on the patch using a drywall knife. If
necessary, apply drywall tape around the perimeter and spread on another thin coat
of joint compound. Let the area dry and then sand the area using a fine grit
sandpaper. 7. After the joint compound is completely dry, apply another coat of
joint compound using the drywall knife, blending in the repaired area with the
surrounding wall. Allow to dry completely and sand again with fine grit sandpaper.
Once you have completed the steps, you should have a seamless patch. All that is
left to do now is paint the repaired area and your job is complete. To do this you
need to prime the newly repaired area first. You can use a latex based primer to do
this such as Kilz or Zinsser. After priming the repaired area and allowing it to dry,
you are ready for the finish coat. If you have touch up paint it may not match
perfectly because even interior paint will fade over a period of time. If your paint
does not match, there are two different options. The first option is to repaint the
entire room which is another project altogether or you can paint from corner to
corner of the repaired wall. I would advise you to try and paint from corner to
corner of the repaired wall first and if it does not match with the rest of the room you
can always paint the entire
Gary Shteyngart s Super Sad True Love Story
A Super Sad Sorry Awful Novel Gary Shteyngart s novel, Super Sad True Love
Story was a New York bestseller and won the 2011 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse
Prize for comic literature. The novel has been critically acclaimed and given more
good reviews than it truthfully deserves. When reading a novel one expects the writing
to pull you in and captivate you with each turn of the page. However, this is not
one of those novels. Motivation for reading this novel began to slip soon into the
first chapter and my class grade is the only reason I was able to complete the
reading. The novel is meant to be written in satire but throughout the entire book, I
only found a select few lines witty or amusing. There are a few appealing things
worth mentioning among the atrocity that lies between the covers of this novel.
Each chapter is written in either a diary entry or messages and chats. This
technique is called epistolary which allows for an interesting look at each of the
main character s voices. Leonard, or Lenny, Abramov is the more expressive of the
two as he often becomes long winded because of his detailed descriptions of what he
finds beautiful. Eunice is on the other side of the spectrum as she is brief and
concise. The interesting part of the use of emails, chats,... Show more content on

The novel moves forward several decades into Lenny s life in Europe. He has
published his diary and Eunice s letters into a novel which becomes an international
bestseller called Super Sad True Love Story as well as a television show and a major
movie production. In my opinion, this reflects terribly on the author who seems to be
self congratulating himself by writing this into his novel. The book includes flattering
critiques quotes such as, a tribute to literature as it once was. (327). One can find
insulting reviews that still associate him with the final generation of American literary
Mechanical Design Of Storage Vessel
MECHANICAL DESIGN PARAMETERS
The mechanical design of storage vessel are based on the following considerations:
(a) Design Code : ASME SEC. VIII or IS 2825 or BS : 5500 or equivalent duly
approved by CCOE. Design shall take into account Static and Mobile Pressure
Vessels (Unfired) Rules 1981 also. A single code shall be adopted for the design,
fabrication, inspection and testing, i.e. ASME and BS shall not be combined.
(b) Material : Micro alloyed steel containing Ni, MB, VA is not considered. Where
H2S presence cannot be completely ruled out (Like in Refineries), high stress
material shall not be used as it is prone to hydrogen induced stress corrosion
cracking. Hence ASTM A516 Gr. 60 or equivalent is recommended. For Marketing
installations, where H2S is not present, ASTM A 516 Gr.70 or SA 537 CLASS 1 is
recommended.

Night Father s Relationship
The novel Night is written by Elie Wiesel, who is a Holocaust survivor. In this
novel he writes about his experience through the concentration camps which
involved the death of his family and close friends. One of the most painful
thoughts throughout the book was his relationship with his father and how it
changed over time. From the beginning it was just Elie and his father. During their
journey, his father became more dependent on Elie. It was particularly hard for
him to care for his father while watching many other young boys disown their
fathers and leave them to die. His father became weaker every day and it was a
struggle to sit back and watch, because there really was nothing he could do to have
saved him in the end. One of the

Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing
field of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. The issue presented by the
author is amenable. The reasons to buttress my stand are as follows.
Firstly, educational institutions should allow the students to dog any field of study
based on their interest even if it precludes the students. By facing difficulties are the
only way to pass difficulties in life for instant consider Michael Jordon indisputable

The Concept of Protesting with Non-Violence
The concept of Protesting with Non Violence is to bring some shame to your
oppressor so they can realize the wrong they are doing without violence. Without
violence there is no urge for retaliation only acceptance of friendship. Some felt that
this was a cowardice way to protest, and had to be taught those who resisted it
without fully understanding it. They taught that this method is nonaggressive
physically but strongly aggressive spiritually. It is not meant to humiliate or
challenge the whites, but to win over their friendship, and respect as human beings.
This was a movement awaken the philosophy of love. With this method of
boycotting it involves not only avoiding external aggression, but also internal
aggression on the spirit. To love and accept others who have wronged you, you must
first love yourself. Martian Luther believed that believing in nonviolence means you
believe the universe recognizes injustices and through freewill comically fixes them.
The sit ins were another important part of the movement. The one that started it all
was in North Carolina in Greensboro. These sit ins were very successful they were
the spark that started desegregation. Four college student went into Woolworth for
lunch, and were refused service. So they refused to leave. This act got African
American talking why didn t they stand up and say enough is enough? It was then
they realized segregation only exists because they allowed it to. They had verbally
opposed it, but hadn t
Reasons For Referral And Background Information
Reasons for referral and background information
Reasons for referral The referral of the client was done on the basis of evaluation
and assessment by the clinical psychiatrist at the Williamsburg Mental Health
Center after the school psychologist discovered that she has undergone some
behavioral problems which are symptoms of depression as well as a mental illness
(Asendorpf, 2003). The nature of this assessment takes a while since various steps
and procedures need to be taken and to conduct various tests and be able to come up
with the best intervention that will help treat the client. The client has to be assessed
and observed occasionally, and this means that she has to be around for the
psychologist to carry out the various tests ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this is her second psychology test. After the school psychologist noticed
some funny behaviors with Jane, he recommended her for an evaluation so as to
avoid any further complications. Some of the signs of a possible mental illness as
shown by Jane include dissatisfaction with her life, stress, and depression, feeling of
hopelessness, not being sociable as always, she appears being sad, aspects of
inadequacy in her life, as well as the lack of progress in her position as the
administrative assistant. Essentially, the client here is known as Jane Smith who
was referred to the Williamsburg Mental Health Center after there was a discovery
that she had funny symptoms of depression as well as suicidal attempts. The
admission date for Jane was 10/8/2013, Number case 12783A and the evaluation date
was 10/12/2013.

various assessment measures and these measures are listed as follows:
пѓ The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Adolescent (MMPI A)
пѓ Examination of mental status
пѓ The review of Past school records
пѓ Review of past Medical Records
пѓ Interviewing the client, family, close friends as well as colleagues

P. F. Chang Case
Case Study: P.F. Chang serves its workers well
It is suggested by various text books and management tutors alike, that the mastering
of the four functions of management; Planning, controlling, organising and leading
along with developing technical, human and conceptual skills, should go some way
to allowing a manager some degree of success in the field of management. Of course,
having skills is just part of being an effective manager, these skills and functions must
be communicated in a way that fellow managers and workers can understand and act
upon.
The case study of P.F. Chang, a U.S based chain of Asian Bistros and contemporary

Chang makes a point of putting their customers satisfaction at the forefront of their
business. This position is illustrated in the 2010 financial report of P.F. Chang which
stated that the company s aim was to strive to create a loyal customer base that
generates a high level of repeat business in our restaurants and translates to interest
and trial of our retail products [however] Our business is highly sensitive to changes
in guest traffic and our operators concentrate on consistent execution of superior
customer service while also focusing on additional opportunities for operating
efficiencies (P.F. Chang, 2011).
Some workers may struggle with the concept of exceptional customer service and a
P.F. Chang manager must find ways to organise those workers to meet the companies
expectations while upholding the companies values of openness and respect.
The case study mentions that restaurant managers face the challenge every day of
putting the right person in the right job, creating a team that works well together . At
P.F. Chang, staff meet before every work shift where the manager is able to organise
staff, reminding them of them of their duties for which ever role they may occupy.
This meeting could also give the manager an insight into which member of the team
may be feeling unmotivated and time could then be made to talk to the team member
and discuss any issues.

Compare And Contrast Cotton Patch Cafe And Francisco s...

Francisco s Restaurant and Cotton Patch Cafe Most people or college students like
me have work in the food industry. While I have only worked in two restaurants my
whole life, I have learned so much about food and management. First I worked in
Francisco s Tex Mex Restaurant while I was still in High School. Then, after
graduating I changed to Cotton Patch Cafe because they could fit my schedule better.
Although they have many similarities, both follow different procedures in making
food and managing. Cotton Patch Cafe and Francisco s Restaurant relate to the same
industry but have differences in their service and cuisine. (Thesis) To begin, both
restaurants have great service but both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(TS 1) To start, Cotton Patch Cafe always makes food from scratch using
traditional recipes.(STS 1) They even have a professional chef that creates these
amazing food and recipes. Each recipe has its instructions well developed for better
quality food. In addition, they have their secret seasoning recipes which gives food a
whole different flavor. However, recipes in Francisco s are not always followed. To
illustrate, they don t measure the condiments while making the food. Because
some recipes come from the owner s traditions, they don t like changing the recipes
for a better taste. Consequently, this causes the prep cook to not follow recipes.
One reason customers come back is because of their original flavor and taste. (STS
2) Cotton Patch Cafe is an american style cuisine. Their best sellers are the juicy
steaks, fried food and seafood but they sell other tasty food like salads and burgers.
This food is unique because of their secret seasonings which makes food from good
to great. The side dishes, appetizers and desserts they have are also flavory such as
the bacon cheese fries and Dr. Pepper chocolate cake. On the other hand, Francisco
s has a traditional mexican style cuisine. Some of the food has the flavor and taste I
would find in Mexico. For example, the stuffed chiles with Monterey Jack cheese
and taco meat are delicious. One appetizer that is quite unique is the fried shrimp
avocado. This
The Third Estate And The French Revolution
Before the revolution, French society was divided into three estates or orders. The
Third Estate was by far the largest of these, containing around 27 million people or
98 per cent of the nation. The Third Estate included every French citizen who did
not possess a noble title and was not ordained by the church. As might be expected
within such a large group, the Third Estate was marked by considerable diversity. It
housed many different classes and levels of wealth; many different professions and
ideas; rural, urban and provincial people alike. Members of the Third Estate ranged
from lowly beggars and struggling peasants to urban artisans and labourers; from the
shopkeepers and commercial middle classes to the nation s wealthiest merchants...

At the apex of the Third Estate s social hierarchy was the bourgeoisie, or capitalist
middle classes. The bourgeoisie were business owners and professionals who had
acquired enough wealth to live comfortably. There was also diversity within their
ranks. The so called petit bourgeoisie ( petty or small bourgeoisie ) were small scale
traders, landlords, shopkeepers and managers. The haute bourgeoisie ( high
bourgeoisie ) were wealthy merchants and traders, colonial landholders, industrialists,
bankers and financiers, tax farmers and trained professionals like doctors and
lawyers. The bourgeoisie flourished during the 1700s, on the back of France s
economic growth, modernisation, increased production, imperial expansion and
foreign trade. The haute bourgeoisie rose from the middle classes to become
independently wealthy, well educated and ambitious. As their wealth increased, so
did their desire for social status and political representation. Many bourgeoisie craved
entry into the Second Estate. They had enough money to acquire the costumes,
trappings and grand residences of the noble classes, however they lacked their titles,
privileges and prestige. The wealthiest of the bourgeoisie could buy their way into the
nobility through venal offices, though by the 1780s this was becoming frightfully
Nationalism And Democracy Are Intertwined Within The
State
Nationalism and democracy often are co existent with each other at any time within
the state. These interactions that they have with each other culminate in both benefits
and problems for society, or sometimes produce a neutral reaction. This essay will
explore these interactions that could either be beneficial, detrimental, or neutral in the
ways that nationalism and democracyare intertwined within the state. The important
notion that nationalism brings to democracy is the concept of conflict. Nationalism
creates these tensions between the different members of society as they all seek fair
or preferential treatment from the state. Therefore, arguments, tensions, and
dissenting opinions are inside every state and if democracy can organize these issues,
the state will run smoothly. The opposite is true as well, as extreme nationalism may
destroy the state. This requires democracy to ensure that the correct amount of
nationalism exists so that society will agree with its governmentand progress. The
inability to monitor it, however can interrupt the democratic process and degrade
the state s well being. Nationalism creates pride in one s identity and beliefs, which
increases the chance that they will want their wishes to be represented. As Donald
L. Horowitz argues, one of the larger factors of democratic failures is ethnic
conflict. He writes, Ethnic identity provides clear lines to determine who will be
included and who will be excluded. This describes the impact of
Andrew Carnegie and the the Second Industrial
Revolution...
Andrew Carnegie and the the Second Industrial Revolution Andrew Carnegie, the
King of Steel , the benevolent employer, the giant of industry, was among the
greatest influences of the second industrial revolution. It is sometimes questioned
whether Carnegie was the ruthless, sneaky steel tyrant some made him out to be, or
the generous, benevolent education benefactor he appeared to be. I believe him to
be a combination of both, but more so the great giant of industry. Carnegie was the
classic rags to riches story, the penniless immigrant who made it big in the land of
opportunity. Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and migrated to America
in 1848 at the age of 13. His first job was in a cotton mill, earning a measly $1.20...

As young as 33, Carnegie was pulling in an annual income of $50,000 a year, a
huge amount at that time, and this was enough for him. Carnegie was a firm
believer that anyone could make it to the top, and that it was the wealthys duty to
help the poor work towards a more comfortable life. Carnegie said that the man
who dies rich, dies disgraced. This is a greedy, unselfish philosophy that a robber
baron could not conceive. Without Carnegie, the steel industry, and the second
industrial revolution in general, would never have progressed as much as it did.
Carnegie did what was necessary to make the steel industry more productive and
more efficient, for less money. He was a shrewd, ruthless, businessman who s
aggressiveness made the steel, railroad, and oil industries so economically
successful. These characteristics, though not always looked upon as nice or
sympathetic, were sometimes necessary. He had paid his time as a poor factory
boy, and now it was his turn to live comfortably and aid others less fortunate to
work towards the same success. I feel that Carnegie was a very generous and
benevolent philanthropist in his giving of hundreds of millions of dollars to schools,
libraries, arts and music centers, and other educational and recreational facilities.
However, I believe it would have been more ethical to be more

Gender Equality Essays. Essay on equality in gender

  • 1. Gender Equality Essays Crafting an essay on the subject of gender equality is a challenging endeavor that requires a nuanced understanding of the complex issues surrounding this topic. The difficulty arises not only from the need to delve into historical contexts, social constructs, and cultural nuances but also from navigating the evolving landscape of gender dynamics in contemporary society. One must meticulously research and analyze the historical roots of gender inequality, examining how societal norms and structures have shaped and perpetuated disparities between genders. Simultaneously, addressing the contemporary aspects of this issue involves staying abreast of current events, ongoing debates, and legislative changes that impact gender equality. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the topic demands a careful approach to ensure inclusivity and respect for diverse perspectives. Balancing the exploration of challenges faced by different genders, the strides made towards equality, and the ongoing struggles necessitates a keen awareness of the multifaceted nature of gender issues. In addition to the intellectual demands, the emotional aspect cannot be overlooked. The subject of gender equality often elicits strong emotions, and navigating these sentiments requires a delicate touch to maintain objectivity while acknowledging the human experiences at the heart of the matter. Writing an essay on gender equality, therefore, involves a dynamic interplay of research, critical thinking, and empathy. It demands not only a grasp of the theoretical frameworks but also an ability to convey the human stories that underscore the urgency of addressing gender disparities. In conclusion, tackling the intricacies of gender equality in an essay requires a comprehensive approach, involving historical, social, cultural, and emotional dimensions. It is a task that demands intellectual rigor, a commitment to understanding diverse perspectives, and a delicate balance between analysis and empathy. • 2. The Awakening, by Kate Chopin The Awakening is set in 1899, a time when the Industrial Revolution and the women s movement were just beginning , conversely, still overshadowed by the attitudes of society in the 19th century. Kate Chopin s idea that a woman s needs were important was somewhat radical, especially since women were not considered to be independent, and women s rights were still being fought for.Edna s major conflict is her need for independence and personal fulfillment while still trying to conform to her traditional upbringing. Edna is expected to be a perfect wifeand mother, both while vacationing on Grand Isle and living in New Orleans. She is to be the social hostess , wife and mother, all the while keeping house, maintaining order with the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edna s children are to be her true companion, above anything else she could ever conceive of doing. Her social duties and pleasures must come second to her responsibilities as a mother. A perfect example of this is when Leonce came home from an evening at the men s club and after checking on the sleeping children. Leonce came back to the bedroom where Edna was sleeping and stated to her that one of the boys had a fever. Edna did not immediately jump up to check on the boy, and even debated with her husband. Leonce reproached his wife for her inattention, [and ] her habitual neglect of the children . He went on to state, If it was not a mother s place to look after [the] children, whose on earth was it? Edna is expected to be chaste, forthright and behave in an reserved manner. She is to conduct herself and dress herself [and the children]according to custom. Many times throughout my reading I noticed that she dressed for an early dinner or the children were properly groomed, since it seemed to be a law of society that hair must be parted and brushed . These restrictions were very troubling for Edna since at heart she was a free spirit. During Edna s time on Grand Isle she learns about freedom of expression from Adele, which ultimately leads Edna to reject the subservient life she is living. Edna wants to be liberated from her previously formal behavior and her repressed emotions and desires. From her friendship with Adele she
  • 3. Understanding William Wordsworth s Imagination Understanding William Wordsworth s Imagination By Alex Khlopenkov AP Literature and Composition Mrs. Brodel April 2, 2015 Khlopenkov 1 Alex Khlopenkov AP Literature and Composition April 2, 2015 Understanding William Wordsworth s Imagination The Romantic Movement of literature in England sparked a rapid change in the common themes of writings produced by the nation s most renowned authors and poets. Writers often explored more subjective topics such as the effect of nature on the individual rather than the chemistry of the mind, a topic of greater importance to philosophers of the Enlightenment. Onto the open stage of this newly flourishing literary movement stepped William Wordsworth, at that time only a young man in his twenties or thirties. Wordsworth would soon become a highly influential poet in this literary era as well as during several political eras that occurred in his lifetime both in England and the rest of Europe. His presence during such a lengthy period of rapid change both in literature and other aspects of society made Wordsworth more than just a great composer of verse. While his poems retain their value as great reads to this day, Wordsworth serves as a portal into the thoughts of people living in his time period. The subject matter of his poetry reveals what issues held the most importance for writers and other citizens of England at the time and the way in which contemporary politics may have affected writers including Wordsworth.
  • 4. Munchausen Syndrome Analysis Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy, ... is caused by a caregiver who uses various techniques to induce symptoms in a child giving the child drugs, tampering with medications, contaminating a feeding tube, or even smothering the child, for example (Comer, 2014, p. 238). I assume that this diagnosis is psychologically brought about. Something inside the brain of the person who is diagnosed with this syndrome seeks a special kind of attention. I would almost view it as an addiction. In ways they are craving this attention from medical professionals and peers. Also, the Nemours Foundation claims that those diagnosed with Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy are not only seeking attention, Some experts believe that it isn t just the attention that s gained... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, I now understand how crucial this diagnosis is. It is disturbing to know that this is taking place more often today. From my perspective, I can t grasp how a parent or guardian could treat their child like they are ill or enforce ill upon them. However, I do believe it should be considered a psychological disorder. There are many other mental illnesses that pose harm to people, yet they are viewed as something that needs to be treated. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy should be treated the same as any other mental
  • 5. Description Of The Disorder. What If You Were Physically Description of the Disorder What if you were physically paralyzed, conscious, and unable to communicate? You would feel locked in, trapped in your body, constantly searching for a way to communicate with the outside world. Locked in Syndrome is a rare condition in which a patient is unable to produce any form of movement or verbal communication. An individual with Locked in Syndrome (LIS) is affected by tetraplegia, which is the partial or complete paralysis of the limbs in the human body (Villines, 2015); an additional symptom includes anarthria, or the inability to produce speech, which results from a loss of function in the speech muscles and a difficulty articulating words (Vega, 2016). Patients affected by LIS are often described as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A patient with classical LIS has the potential to improve dramatically over a prolonged amount of time. In contrast, the recovery for patients with incomplete or total LIS may take more time and appears more difficult to accomplish. Symptoms of LIS are similar to those that occur during sleep paralysis; however, LIS is not considered a transitional state between being awake and asleep. Some characteristic of LIS include a difficulty breathing, and the inability to chew, swallow, speak, and control movements in the lower area of the face. Locked in Syndrome is not more prevalent in any age, race, nor gender. However, individuals prone to stroke and traumatic brain injury victims are more likely to become locked in. In addition, there is no standard course for this disorder; the development of LIS is abrupt, rather than progressive, and diagnosis may take years. Etiology and Associated Medical Information How can an individual be cognitively locked in? Locked in Syndrome can be caused by poisoning, brainstem strokes, infarctions, traumatic brain injuries, medication overdose, and progressive neurodegenerative diseases. Common neurodegenerative diseases that may potentially be affected by Locked in Syndrome (LIS) include: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myelin loss, and the inflammation of nerves. LIS is often a result of damage afflicted on the pons, an area on the brainstem in charge of sensory and motor roles.
  • 6. Mede Ancient Greek Misfortune Witten By Euripides Medea is an ancient Greek misfortune Witten by Euripides. The play is based on the myth of Jason and Medea and first produced in 431 BCE. Euripides was the first Greek poet to suffer the fate of so many of the great modern writers: rejected by most of his contemporaries. Euripides was the son of Mnesarchus. The family owned property on the island of Salamis, and Euripideswas twice married and had three sons. Euripides was well ahead of his time. He irritated people in his own day by his harsh criticism and won only five dramatic prizes during the course of his career. Euripides decision of women support characters such as the nurse and the chorus is imperative to the magnification of Medeas feelings. The very fact that the nurse and chorus... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also give advice to Medea on how to get back at Jason. The chorus has Medea s back and will always be there for her. The ending shows irony. Medea kills both of her sons, as well as the killing of the princess and Kreon. After all the events she is still pleased with herself. The plot of Medea is very straightforward, and happens in a logical sequence. The thought of this plot can be expressed in a single sentence: Medea s heart is destroyed by Jason when he marries another woman, which leads her to seek revenge. In this play, characterization is the main focus, and the characters are only a means of moving the plot forward. For example, Medea s evil trait is developed through her resentful actions. Another element of theatre which is demonstrated throughout the story is the use of elevated diction, which heightens the emotions of the audience. Music, also an element of theatre, is used to stimulate emotion as well. The main demonstration of this element is the Chorus, which provides explanations and reviews on the action occurring. As all the events of Medea s revenge progress, it is unclear how the conflict will be resolved. To end the play, Euripides includes the final element of theatre: spectacle. Just when it seems Medea has no escape from being punished, she appears in a chariot drawn by dragons. This transpiration is considered a contrivance, as it is an unexpected and highly
  • 7. Genie Wild Child The Secret of Wild Child is an Emmy award winning documentary which talks about a feral child Genie and how the affects of social isolation had severely damaged her both physically and mentally. Genie was 13 when she was discovered by social workers. She was kept chained to a potty chair in her bedroom. She was abused by her parents so much that she couldn t even learn to speak. She was made to sit alone every day and night. She had no one to talk to and the girl when found by social workers gave an impression of an infant. She was still in diapers when she was found. Genie had a very awkward bunny walk and non human features. She used to sniff and claw everything. She used to make noises as she couldn t speak and she was abused by her parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Genie was hence removed from Rigler s care and she was sent to her birth mother who found it too difficult to handle her and hence Genie was moved from one foster home to the other. This period was the beginning of an end for Genie as she was abused regularly. In 1975 came a shocker when Genie s birth mother sued the Riglers and the research team charging them with excessive testing and exploiting the girl. After the lawsuit, Genie was sent back to the Children s Hospital. Her condition had worsened due to lack of care at foster homes. Unfortunately, the progressed that was observed at the early stages of her treatment was nowhere to be seen now due to subsequent treatment she received at the foster homes. Afraid of being abused again for opening her mouth, Genie had turned back to being silent. In Genie s case, sometimes her interest came second to interests of the scientists. In her case, to make matters worse, one man played the role of psychologist and scientist. Hence we can conclude that even though Genie showed signs of doing the impossible by turning her life of social isolation around, she was unable to achieve this feat in the end all because of involvement of the legal authorities and the lawsuits and the greed that the team had developed to become famous and make a name for

People who have it tend to talk too much, affects their behavior, forgets or lose things, has a hard time getting along with people, and falls into temptation easily (CDC). I also thought that this disability was something that someone would have to live with for the rest of their lives, but now I know that if someone who has it there is a small chance that the disability sympthoms will decrease over time. I went to high school with a kid who had ADHD and I saw that it was very hard for them to get close to anyone and they had a hard time focusing while in class. There were many children in my class that had other disabilities and my school made smaller classes for all the children with disabilities they taught them the material at a slow pace and they would give them extra time on tests. When having a disability, I think the hardest thing to do is to go to school and I think that really affects a child s development. It affects their learning, makes it hard to make friends, and some people bully children with

People back then were quite prejudiced towards any race that was not Christian. They would have hated Jews. When Shylock would come onto the stage, the audience would have just booed him back off. The Christians had their reasons for hating the Jews. The fact that they supposedly killed Jesus still angers many people today. Christians were resentful of their wealth. Jews were very successful with their businesses. You could say that the Christians were experiencing Xenophobia, fear of foreigners. They feared that they would take over their land. On the other hand the Elizabethan audience members might go up on stage and give him a pat on the back. When the court scene begins, Shylock is not anywhere to be seen nor is Antonio, the supposed victim of his. The duke is there who is supposed to be the master of ceremonies. One thing that you should know is that Antonio and the Duke are good friends, which puts Shylock in a bad position right away as the man who decides his fate is biased towards Antonio, meaning that he is in favour of helping out Antonio. The Duke says to Antonio, I m Sorry for Thee. You can see that Shylock will have his work cut out for him. The court rooms are a place of justice, the duke should not even think to be biased. They describe Shylock as, stony, cold and inhuman. They say that he is incapable of pity. He is at the bottom of the chain of beings, below animals. You can see that Shylock is being criticised in his absence. The Christians who are in the court at the moment refer to him as The Jew. He is nameless to these people. He is portrayed, through their use of language, as a stone cold villain. After much criticism and behind his back abuse, Shylock comes in. His entry is quite dramatic in the way of what he brings in with him. It shows his cold side, and

  • 12. The Color Purple as a Parable The Color Purple Parable According to Scholl s article, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, is a parable. In classifying a story as a parable, Scholl determines that a parable must be a movement through a realistically improbable sequence of narrative reversals toward a conclusion that defies realistic expectations. (Scholl, 255) These reversals are very evident throughout the novel and render the conclusion unrealistic. In almost every character, there is an ironic reversal of what should happen and what does happen. She had become a smoker and an alcoholic, who had slept with a lot of men and is said to possibly have some unclean disease. Shug had become very sickly when she met Celie. By the end of the novel, she returns to the church and also goes back to her father, who had exiled her from the family. She too had achieved total happiness through Celie. Other reversals happen with Harpo (Celie s brother in law), Sophia, and Squeak. Harpo and Sophia marry, but Sophia doesn t listen to Harpo like he feels a woman should, so he beats her. Sophia ends up leaving Harpo and has a fight with his new girlfriend Squeak. The reversal comes at the end of the novel when Squeak incorporates total trust in Sophia as her loyal friend and keeper of her kids, while she pursues singing. Sophia s reversal deals with the race controversy in the deep South. Whites were of course considered dominant and ruled the blacks. Sophia was originally put in jail for hitting the Mayor. Yossorian, however, had other plans as he decides to get away from the catch 22 once and for all by escaping to neutral country of Sweden to take control of his life once again. There are many different elements that Joseph Heller utilizes to portray the horrors of war such as the characterization of Yossorian, the characterization of Milo Minderbinder, and the theme of the absurdity of war presented throughout the novel. Unlike many other characters in the book, Yossorian is characterized as a realist who sees all the horrors of the war when many others cannot. The mother in Girl speaks as if she has been accustomed to living this way all her life and, according to her, its how her daughter should live also. Each family has different rules depending on their ethnicity. Most parents raise their daughters with the rules their own parents made them believe in, which in the end just creates stereotypes for others to use. Clopidogrel can be prescribed prophylactically to high risk patients or to those who have experienced atherothrombotic events such as strokes, acute coronary syndrome, peripheral arterial diseases or any other thrombi producing illnesses (Cheek, 2013). Clopidogrel works by inhibiting the binding of adenosine diphosphate to platelet receptors, thus, disrupting the process of platelet formation and preventing platelet aggregation and thrombi formation. However, in order to inhibit the binding of ADP, clopidogrel has to be converted to its active form by the enzyme CYP2C19*1. Unfortunately, some people have lost the ability to produce enzyme CYP2C19*1 and instead produce a variant form known as CYP2C19*2. CYP2C19*2 cannot convert clopidogrel to its active form, making clopidogrel useless in patients who carry gene CYP2C19*2. Providentially, pharmacogenomics can identify variant genes with DNA sequencing prior to prescribing medications in order to assure the effectiveness of pharmacologic therapy. We can save money and CO2 by reducing our carbon footprints, which is the total quantity of greenhouse gases that someone produces. Although we don t think about them very often, a carbon footprint is part of everyone s life because it s measured on things we use, our actions create and waste CO2, and several people have worked to find energy saving ways to reduce them and help the environment. A carbon footprint is measured by using several different variables about someone s lifestyle. It s important to note that depending on where someone may live influences their impact on their carbon footprint. Just as Stephanie Pappas mentioned; In California, for example, electricity generation is relatively climate friendly, so focusing on vehicular emissions has a greater impact . This is because people today, especially teenagers, are addicted to taking selfies every day, considering that this is already a popular trend. Allow to dry completely and sand again with fine grit sandpaper. Once you have completed the steps, you should have a seamless patch. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the apex of the Third Estate s social hierarchy was the bourgeoisie, or capitalist middle classes. The bourgeoisie were business owners and professionals who had acquired enough wealth to live comfortably. There was also diversity within their ranks. The so called petit bourgeoisie ( petty or small bourgeoisie ) were small scale traders, landlords, shopkeepers and managers. The haute bourgeoisie ( high bourgeoisie ) were wealthy merchants and traders, colonial landholders, industrialists, bankers and financiers, tax farmers and trained professionals like doctors and lawyers. The bourgeoisie flourished during the 1700s, on the back of France s economic growth, modernisation, increased production, imperial expansion and foreign trade. The haute bourgeoisie rose from the middle classes to become independently wealthy, well educated and ambitious. As their wealth increased, so did their desire for social status and political representation. Many bourgeoisie craved entry into the Second Estate. They had enough money to acquire the costumes, trappings and grand residences of the noble classes, however they lacked their titles, privileges and prestige. The wealthiest of the bourgeoisie could buy their way into the nobility through venal offices, though by the 1780s this was becoming frightfully
  • 50. Nationalism And Democracy Are Intertwined Within The State Nationalism and democracy often are co existent with each other at any time within the state. These interactions that they have with each other culminate in both benefits and problems for society, or sometimes produce a neutral reaction. This essay will explore these interactions that could either be beneficial, detrimental, or neutral in the ways that nationalism and democracyare intertwined within the state. The important notion that nationalism brings to democracy is the concept of conflict. Nationalism creates these tensions between the different members of society as they all seek fair or preferential treatment from the state. Therefore, arguments, tensions, and dissenting opinions are inside every state and if democracy can organize these issues, the state will run smoothly. The opposite is true as well, as extreme nationalism may destroy the state. This requires democracy to ensure that the correct amount of nationalism exists so that society will agree with its governmentand progress. The inability to monitor it, however can interrupt the democratic process and degrade the state s well being. Nationalism creates pride in one s identity and beliefs, which increases the chance that they will want their wishes to be represented. As Donald L. Horowitz argues, one of the larger factors of democratic failures is ethnic conflict. He writes, Ethnic identity provides clear lines to determine who will be included and who will be excluded. This describes the impact of
  • 51. Andrew Carnegie and the the Second Industrial Revolution... Andrew Carnegie and the the Second Industrial Revolution Andrew Carnegie, the King of Steel , the benevolent employer, the giant of industry, was among the greatest influences of the second industrial revolution. It is sometimes questioned whether Carnegie was the ruthless, sneaky steel tyrant some made him out to be, or the generous, benevolent education benefactor he appeared to be. I believe him to be a combination of both, but more so the great giant of industry. Carnegie was the classic rags to riches story, the penniless immigrant who made it big in the land of opportunity. Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland, and migrated to America in 1848 at the age of 13. His first job was in a cotton mill, earning a measly $1.20... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As young as 33, Carnegie was pulling in an annual income of $50,000 a year, a huge amount at that time, and this was enough for him. Carnegie was a firm believer that anyone could make it to the top, and that it was the wealthys duty to help the poor work towards a more comfortable life. Carnegie said that the man who dies rich, dies disgraced. This is a greedy, unselfish philosophy that a robber baron could not conceive. Without Carnegie, the steel industry, and the second industrial revolution in general, would never have progressed as much as it did. Carnegie did what was necessary to make the steel industry more productive and more efficient, for less money. He was a shrewd, ruthless, businessman who s aggressiveness made the steel, railroad, and oil industries so economically successful. These characteristics, though not always looked upon as nice or sympathetic, were sometimes necessary. He had paid his time as a poor factory boy, and now it was his turn to live comfortably and aid others less fortunate to work towards the same success. I feel that Carnegie was a very generous and benevolent philanthropist in his giving of hundreds of millions of dollars to schools, libraries, arts and music centers, and other educational and recreational facilities. However, I believe it would have been more ethical to be more
