At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS. I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

After completing the initial year, I4MS has hosted its first public international event on 18th June in Berlin, in cooperation with the launch of the German manufacturing programme, Autonomik für Industrie 4.0". I4MS has brought together more than 150 professionals from industry and innovation, who have attended to several presentations about what has been achieved by I4MS and further funding opportunities for SMEs and middle size corporates (mid-caps) under the Initiative. The event signified the importance of SMEs in Europes manufacturing industry and their role in the reindustrialisation process for Europe. At a glance: SMEs are providers of around 45% of manufacturing added value and roughly 59% of employment in the manufacturing sector.

Ultrafast lasers can help address challenges in the solar industry. Through the I4MS project, a picosecond fiber laser was customized for scribing thin film copper indium gallium selenide solar cells. Testing the laser in a scribing machine at Bern University of Applied Sciences allowed validating the process. This is expected to standardize laser scribing, lower solar cell production costs, and increase Onefive's market share in solar. The global solar market is projected to grow significantly by 2019, providing an opportunity for increased sales and revenue for Onefive.

Cyber Physical Production Systems (CPPS) represent the Key Enabling Technology at the basis of the fourth Industrial Revolution of Industry 4.0. BEinCPPS I4MS Phase II project aims at spreading the presence of CPPS-based industrial experiments to all the Regions of Europe, starting from 5 champion experiments located in advanced Vanguard EU regions. BEinCPPS provides a CPS/IOT Open Platform on top of which application developers could base innovative services e.g. in the field of production planning, resources management, logistics optimisation. BEinCPPS Open Call 1 targets the development, testing and experimentation of innovative IT applications experiments, which, based on CPPS technology, could significantly enhance the impact of CPPS into the Manufacturing Industry and SMEs / Mid Caps in particular. Open APIs and datasets coming from the project's 5 experimental facilities will form an IT infrastructure for a realistic testing and experimentation of the new applications. A second wave of Open Calls will afterwards replicate the first wave best practices to additional regions in EU, facilitated by the presence of Regional Digital Manufacturing Innovation Hubs.
