Francis Wray from the University of Edinburgh discussed how the Fortissimo 2 project provides cloud-based high performance computing (HPC) simulation and analytics to enable better design through advanced simulation and better understanding via large-scale data processing. This significant computing power is needed but raises barriers for smaller companies; a pay-per-use, one-stop shop approach can help address this. Examples include using sensor data from production lines to optimize manufacturing, monitoring vehicle condition via real-time data processing, and optimizing gas detector layouts in hazardous plants.
