Meeting the Challenge
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 4
 IES intends to expand current capabilities and move from an approach of single
building simulation, to multi-building city-scale simulations
 Moving to City-Scale Simulations
WHAT WE ACHIEVED
Primary Achievement
Moving our SunCast module
onto a cloud based platform
for faster simulations
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 5
WHY WE DID IT
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 6
6
There is a growing need for IES to
increase the speed of our
simulations. This is both at individual
building level, and more recently for
city-scale level
Open new markets for us where we
move from early stage master
planning to detailed design, to the
development of smart cities
HOW I4MS HELPED
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels
• Provided suitable testing
platform to experiment with
cloud computing in a low risk
setting
• Has enabled IES to perform
intricate simulations via a web
based platform as opposed to
running on a desktop solution
• Has allowed IES to create a new
market for the company
– Blue Ocean Strategy i.e. creating
a new market instead of
competing in an existing red
ocean

Project Example - Masterplanning
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 9
• Northside Coalition, Pittsburgh, USA
• Main Features of project:
– 3D Model Creation of existing buildings in
Northside Coalition area
– Building Energy Simulation
– Photo Voltaics (PV) & Solar Thermal Potential
– Wind Potential
– Overall Energy Masterplanning
Project Example - Masterplanning
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 10
• Use of Cloud Services
– Our SunCast Module was
used to provide an analysis
of solar radiation falling on
buildings -> useful to show
potential for PV
– In this case it ranged from
72.25 kWh/m2 (blue) to
1377.25 kWh/m2 (red)
– Dependent on orientation
of buildings, and
overshadowing of other
buildings
Project Example – In-depth Simulation

Project Example – In-depth Simulation
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 12
• Hotel Project, Middle East
• Main Features of project:
– 3D Model Creation of the hotel
– 7 story building, 250 guest rooms
– Large organic shaped wrap-around for shading
– 35,626 surfaces in the model, 5,538 windows
Project Example – In-depth Simulation
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 13
• Use of Cloud Services
– Our SunCast Module was used to
provide an analysis of solar
radiation penetrating all the
rooms of the building
– Resulted in greater
understanding of passive heating
of the buildings and explicit need
for shading
– More detailed analysis than
Pittsburgh example
Project Example – Benefits
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 14
• Speed
• Prior to obtaining cloud services, a simulation like that run in
for Pittsburgh could have taken 3 hours. This simulation was
run in 10 minutes
• In the Middle East Example, the simulation would have taken
2 weeks to run, this was done in 2 days with through the use
of cloud capabilities
• Reduced human resource
• Data Capacity
• Prior to obtaining cloud services, simulations taken at this
scale would be far more susceptible to crashing
• Increased efficiency and reliability
HOW WE WILL TAKE IT FORWARD
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 15
• Increase our modules on the cloud
• SunCast completed, Radiance will be next
HOW WE WILL TAKE IT FORWARD
I4MS 2015: Enhancing Digital Transformation in Manufacturing SMEs · 22nd of May · Brussels 16
• Market evolution
• Faster, more comprehensive
simulations
• Marketing approach/channels
• Target our existing worldwide
customer base which include:

Editor's Notes

  • #5 Please, include in this slide information about actual improvements, ideally with something visual to show + economic impact Just showing what suncast looks like. Top right shows how much sunlight is falling on buildings. Trying to run simulations at cityscale …to run faster simulations would be of benefit
  • #6 Please, include in this slide information about actual improvements, ideally with something visual to show + economic impact Just showing what suncast looks like. Top right shows how much sunlight is falling on buildings.
  • #7 Please, include in this slide information about business case, rationale. Building scale simulation to move into city scale simulations
  • #8 Red ocean already competing in market Blue ocean – a new market
  • #9 Model made in Pittsburg – a 3D model made of existing buildings. Sim carried out on existing uses and then future use after retrofit
  • #11 Suncast analysis run on model. A lot quicker doing it thru the cloud rather than on desktop…and no risk of crashing (red high intensity, blue low)
