Garrett Morgan was an African American inventor and businessman born in 1877 in Kentucky. He moved north for better educational opportunities and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Morgan invented many impactful products including a hair care product and an early traffic signal. He founded a newspaper and advocated for civil rights. Morgan made important contributions but faced challenges from racism and lost most of his vision later in life. He died in 1963 after a life dedicated to invention and social progress.

2. THE BEGINING Garrett Morgan was born on March 4, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky the seventh of 11 children born to Sydney and Elizabeth Morgan.

3. Garrett, at the early age of 14 decided that he should travel north to Ohio in order to receive a better education. He moved to Cincinnati and then to Cleveland, working as a handyman in order to make ends meet. He stayed in Cleveland working as a sewing machine repair man for a clothing manufacturer . In 1907, the inventor opened his own sewing equipment and repair shop. It was the first of several businesses he would establish. In 1908 he married with Mary Anne Hassek, with whom he would have three sons. In 1909 he expanded the enterprise to include a tailoring shop that employed 32 employees.

7. Morgan won many money with that inventions, and he started to be a respect business man. He bought a house and a car. In 1920, Garrett Morgan moved into the newspaper business when he established the Cleveland Call. He also served as the treasurer of the Cleveland Association of Colored Men which eventually merged with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and ran as a candidate for Cleveland's City Council

8. As word of Garrett Morgan's life-saving inventions spread across North America and England, demand for these products grew. He was frequently invited to conventions and public exhibitions to demonstrate how his inventions worked. In his later years, Morgan would develop glaucoma and would thereby lose 90% of his vision. He died on July 27, 1963 and because of his contribution, the world is certainly a much safer place.
