Garrett Augustus Morgan was an African American inventor born in 1877 in Kentucky who invented an early gas mask and patented an early traffic signal. He moved to Cincinnati as a teenager to find work and later moved to Cleveland, where he worked as a sewing machine repairman and opened his own repair shop. In addition to inventing the gas mask for emergency responders, Morgan patented an early three-position traffic signal that used red, yellow, and green lights. He was one of the first African Americans to own an automobile in Cleveland.
