My main text is supported by two ancillary texts; a radio
advert and a newspaper advert. I believe these ancillary
texts are effective and would be quite effectual were they
real advertisements for my documentary.
My first ancillary product is a newspaper advert
I made an advertisement for my documentary to place in a
newspaper. I feel it to be a very effective advert for the documentary
however unlike the majority of adverts for a program or
documentary it doesn’t contain an image from the actual text itself.
It does however contain images related to the subject matter so it’s
not as if it’s completely irrelevant to the documentary. The use of
game controllers and guns in it should attract the attention of the
young male teen target audience; this is because those are the
types of objects young males are interested in stereotypically. This is
why I feel it’s effective in grabbing
attention and informing the audie-
nce of how to view it.
I used the white box surrounding the text establishing the channel it’s
on and what time it’s on to emulate what is commonly used in channel
4 documentary adverts. The large text at the top ‘Choose Your
Weapon’ is a sentence commonly used in games, it plays on the idea
that some people believe if you pick up a game controller you’re willing
to pick up a weapon too. I think it works well as it grabs the attention
of those who have played games before and recognize the sentence
as well as the possible concerned parents who are interested in
finding out whether or not playing games effects their kids. The advert
would seem to imply that documentary argues that gaming does
cause violence, this is in contrast to how the actual documentary
would be; I did this on purpose to attract those who think it does to get
them to watch it and hopefully change their opinion.
My Second ancillary is a Radio Advert
It contains me saying this dialogue over the Mario theme tune:
"Many people believe playing video games leads to violence and aggressive
behaviour in children and teens; we wanted to find out whether or not this is
true, join us on channel 4 Sunday at 9 o'clock.“
It’s basic but I feel it’s effective in advertising my documentary. This is
because it’s factual and poignant. I considered editing a bunch of sound
clips from news reports discussing video games and correlation between
violence but I couldn’t think of a way to put them in a sentence that made
sense and advertised my documentary. I then decided simply to make and
read a script myself because it informed people of what my documentary is
about and when and where it’s viewable; I felt this more of an effective
advertisement.
The advert only runs for 19 seconds, this is to not lose the interest
of the listener and quickly give them the information they need to
watch what I am advertising. It’s also notable that in the dialogue I
invite the audience to ‘join us’ in finding out whether or not violent
video games do cause violence in real life. This is to entice the
audience without informing them of what results the documentary
has found. The use of the Mario them tune is also important to
discuss, I used it because of it’s obvious connotations of gaming
which is the main element of the subject matter in my documentary.
The desired effect would be grabbing the attention of gamers in ear
shot of the radio; this is because they are the main target audience.
Conclusion
I think combined together my ancillaries compliment my documentary piece quite
well. That’s to say they advertise it well without revealing much of the actual
content. While this can be both an ineffective and effective method of
advertisement I feel it’s effective in my products. That’s because the audience is
either interested or not interested in the effects of violent video games, so I felt it
more important to simply share how to access and watch the information as
opposed to trying to convince people to be interested. I feel that the subject is
interesting enough that a large audience would be reachable through this method
of advertising. However the lack of trying to interest the audience is a definite
negative to my ancillaries, both are fairly basic and arguably not interesting
enough to get the attention of those who aren’t the target audience. Overall I
think the combination of my main text and ancillary products works well and they
all connect together; they all follow a similar structure of factuality and poignancy.

Gaming violence

  • 2. My main text is supported by two ancillary texts; a radio advert and a newspaper advert. I believe these ancillary texts are effective and would be quite effectual were they real advertisements for my documentary.
  • 3. My first ancillary product is a newspaper advert I made an advertisement for my documentary to place in a newspaper. I feel it to be a very effective advert for the documentary however unlike the majority of adverts for a program or documentary it doesn’t contain an image from the actual text itself. It does however contain images related to the subject matter so it’s not as if it’s completely irrelevant to the documentary. The use of game controllers and guns in it should attract the attention of the young male teen target audience; this is because those are the types of objects young males are interested in stereotypically. This is why I feel it’s effective in grabbing attention and informing the audie- nce of how to view it.
  • 4. I used the white box surrounding the text establishing the channel it’s on and what time it’s on to emulate what is commonly used in channel 4 documentary adverts. The large text at the top ‘Choose Your Weapon’ is a sentence commonly used in games, it plays on the idea that some people believe if you pick up a game controller you’re willing to pick up a weapon too. I think it works well as it grabs the attention of those who have played games before and recognize the sentence as well as the possible concerned parents who are interested in finding out whether or not playing games effects their kids. The advert would seem to imply that documentary argues that gaming does cause violence, this is in contrast to how the actual documentary would be; I did this on purpose to attract those who think it does to get them to watch it and hopefully change their opinion.

My Second ancillary is a Radio Advert It contains me saying this dialogue over the Mario theme tune: "Many people believe playing video games leads to violence and aggressive behaviour in children and teens; we wanted to find out whether or not this is true, join us on channel 4 Sunday at 9 o'clock.“ It’s basic but I feel it’s effective in advertising my documentary. This is because it’s factual and poignant. I considered editing a bunch of sound clips from news reports discussing video games and correlation between violence but I couldn’t think of a way to put them in a sentence that made sense and advertised my documentary. I then decided simply to make and read a script myself because it informed people of what my documentary is about and when and where it’s viewable; I felt this more of an effective advertisement.
  • 7. The advert only runs for 19 seconds, this is to not lose the interest of the listener and quickly give them the information they need to watch what I am advertising. It’s also notable that in the dialogue I invite the audience to ‘join us’ in finding out whether or not violent video games do cause violence in real life. This is to entice the audience without informing them of what results the documentary has found. The use of the Mario them tune is also important to discuss, I used it because of it’s obvious connotations of gaming which is the main element of the subject matter in my documentary. The desired effect would be grabbing the attention of gamers in ear shot of the radio; this is because they are the main target audience.
  • 8. Conclusion I think combined together my ancillaries compliment my documentary piece quite well. That’s to say they advertise it well without revealing much of the actual content. While this can be both an ineffective and effective method of advertisement I feel it’s effective in my products. That’s because the audience is either interested or not interested in the effects of violent video games, so I felt it more important to simply share how to access and watch the information as opposed to trying to convince people to be interested. I feel that the subject is interesting enough that a large audience would be reachable through this method of advertising. However the lack of trying to interest the audience is a definite negative to my ancillaries, both are fairly basic and arguably not interesting enough to get the attention of those who aren’t the target audience. Overall I think the combination of my main text and ancillary products works well and they all connect together; they all follow a similar structure of factuality and poignancy.
