AI Based Game Design - Teaching how to expand designers' artistic palette wit...Mirjam Eladhari
Talk given at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco on the 3rd of March 2015.
One approach to game design innovation is AI-based game design (AIGD), in which the game mechanics are inspired and enabled by AI systems. This case study describes AIGD as an educational approach along with best practices of using it in teaching, illustrated by example student games demonstrating both design and technical innovation. Teaching AI and design in tandem enables students to take a role where they can use different technological approaches as part of their artistic palette as game developers.

The use of Moodle in STEM education, maker spaces and Fab Labs; Pieter van de...Pieter van der Hijden
In the fifties, in many western countries hobby clubs emerged, that shared tools and knowledge. In the eighties, the same happened with computer clubs, sharing a matrix printer or a telephone modem. Now they have a new successor: MILK (made-in-Limerick) labs, Happy Lab Vienna, Protospace Utrecht, Buda Lab Kortrijk, and more generically the Fab Labs, Maker spaces, repair cafés, and hacker spaces. They all focus on making, learning, sharing and empowering.
The popularity of the maker concept has its impact on more and more educational institutes. To motivate their students, to improve their STE(A)M education, many school organise tours to the nearest Fab Lab, promote project activities there or set-up their own Fab Lab embedded in their school. In fact, it is a new trend in social constructivism.
We will shortly introduce you to this new world and reflect on its opportunities and threats for Moodle.

Title:
Computational Game Design: A Frontier and Roadmap for AI-powered Artifactual Science
Abstract:
In this talk, I present a vision to systematize research into one form of creativity: game design. This vision, made operational through artificial intelligence, is concerned with the design, computer-implementation, and use of mathematical models that establish invariant properties of game design—those that relate the structures of virtual worlds, how these are communicated to people, and what mental effects manifest in them as a result. Through several examples drawn from my own research and a roadmap to continue this kind of work into the future, I aim to convince the audience that the value of asking the question “can a machine design?” is that it begs the corollary question “how do people design?”

Gaming for Development - building and applying gaming/simulation in the conte...Pieter van der Hijden
Paper presented at the National Conference Autumn 2011 of JASAG - Japan Association of Simulation and Gaming, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, 22-23 October 2011.
In this talk we will introduce serious games as games which purpose is not only amusement and can be effectively used for educational or training purposes. This kind of games are also frequently named as educational games or even as game-like simulations. We will describe the general characteristics of serious games and how they are used in several domains (e.g. military, medicine), describing their main advantages (e.g. engagement, student motivation) and some of the shortcomings that prevent a wider generalization in educational settings (e.g. cost, deployment). We will also describe new emerging trends in the field of serious games such as gaming for solving scientific problems or how the application of learning analytics techniques can improve and simplify serious games application in different domains.

The UN SDGs are a globally accepted reference framework for socio-economic issues including health and care, they set common goals for all countries for the year 2030 and they are provided with indicators and a system of monitoring to track progress.
We indicate the role health and care play within the SDGs and which fablabs have SDG profiles that show they are interested in this or want to contribute.
Based on current data on the state of “care” within various countries, we can see where the existing fablabs could have the most impact with regard to care. And which themes are preferable to tackle.
A Mind Shift in Mind Mapping; Pieter van der Hijden; Sofos Consultancy, Amste...Pieter van der Hijden
Mindmapping via a “hand tool” is great. With data becoming more and more important it is time to automate it. We developed a simple command language and interpreter (Corel/Mindmanager Macro) to do so.
For more than 20 years mindmapping has been my personal productivity booster. It helps to organize my thoughts, to play on different fields, to plan, to develop and to write. With data becoming more and more important, it is time for a next round.
Spending time with mindmapping software as part of a creative process, planning or writing is a pleasure. But spending time to visualize information is becoming more and more a load. It certainly is possible, but it takes often too much time and energy. As an example, look at the Figure 1. It is very simple in structure; it has a central topic, 13 main topics (picture only) and an additional main topic with some statistics.
Figure 1 - Simple mindmap, nevertheless a lot of work
In this example the creative part of the process to produce the map is rather limited. Maybe you need two minutes to set-up the main idea. But be honest, how many minutes will it take to produce the complete map? and even worse: this map is about UN Sustainable Development Goal #09. There are 17 such goals, so producing such a map for each of these goals will cost you 17 times that amount of time. All this time you can not spend to creative and more engaging processes!
Mindmapping software is like a Swiss Army Knife, a fantastic tool in all kinds of situations. However, this tool needs the hands of a human all the time. So there is an upper limit to the fun you can have with it. In complex applications (eg a map with 100 nodes, decorated with images, markers, hyperlinks etc.), using the tool is too laborious. In series production (eg a series of 17 maps), the repetition becomes boring.
We have to distinguish creative work from creating graphics. The latter should become more and more data driven and automated.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

In a Fab Lab (workshop for digital fabrication) visitors come and go.
Some are one time visitors who look around or take a guided tour.
Others have a personal project in mind like making a present for their
partner or a technical construction for in their homes. They are
returning visitors who use the Fab Lab tools and materials for their
personal project.
A third category are inventors and/or entrepreneurs who
systematically develop prototypes for new products.
The Fab Lab management considers their organization as a (worldwide)
knowledge ecosystem.
Visitors, especially the returning ones, create new knowledge, e.g.
about the materials they used and about the typical characteristics
of the machines.
These visitors carry with them implicit knowledge from elsewhere, e.g.
what they studied, what they watched on tv or what they searched
for on internet.
The Fab Lab management wants to archive all this knowledge in
some way and to make it available just in time to other visitors and,
via events and publications, to the community.
