Gametogenesis in plants is the process of forming haploid male and female gametes, occurring in two main stages: sporogenesis and gametogenesis. In male gamete formation (microgametogenesis), the pollen grains develop in the microsporangia of the anthers, involving the division of the diploid microspore mother cell to produce haploid microspores. Female gamete formation (megagametogenesis) occurs in the ovule, where a megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis, resulting in one surviving megaspore that divides mitotically to form an embryo sac with eight nuclei.
