Game sense focuses on developing problem-solving and decision-making skills through gameplay rather than just following rules. It encourages students to strategize and contribute ideas to achieve game goals as a team. The game sense approach places students in situations where they must solve problems and make decisions to be successful. Teachers prompt students to discuss strategies rather than directly teaching gameplay, and games are paused for reflection. Game sense allows students to discover approaches through cognitive thinking and testing different tactics.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Game sense is the tactics and ideas used during the game
more than just completing the rules of the game by reading
the instructions. The rules cannot be broken but they need
to be implemented through the strategy of the game.
Through game sense skills are developed by each student
contributing their ideas or tactics as to how they believe
would be the most efficient way to achieve the goal of the
game.
(Curriculumsupport,n.d)
3. What game sense encourages
Game sense encourages students to interact and develop
ideas and strategies they need to undertake to fulfil the
instructions of the game.
All students need to be thinking and getting actively
involved both mentally and physically so they can allocate
themselves into the correct positions so they can achieve a
goal as a team.
Each student contributes by interpreting what they think
would be the most effective and efficient by strategically
planning how the aim of the game will be reached.

4. The focus of game sense
The focus of the game sense approach is to place students
in a situation where problem solving and decision making
are central to successful performance.
Teachers using the game sense approach encourages
students to question and stimulate thinking about the
game rather than directly teaching them how to play the
game. The game is stopped at regular intervals and
students are challenged to reflect on what they have
contributed both mentally and physically in order to allow
the game to proceed.

5. Game sense strenths:
Game sense is a process of discovery. Each student
explores and discovers their own approach in order to
contribute a technique in which they find beneficial. It
isn’t just following a specific guideline that involves a
step by step instruction guide. It is more cognitive
thinking and using all kinds of tactics to reach the
final goal of the game. Each student carefully thinks
and is given the flexibility to test possible skills and
observes different ways and different approaches to
achieving the most effective outcome to get to the goal
of the game.
6. Game sense can be applied in 4
different categories:
Striking and Fielding games. For example. Baseball,
softball or cricket
Invasion games such as soccer, netball or football.
Court and net games such as volleyball or tennis
Target games such as bowling or golf
These are the physical activities that involve the use of
game sense to develop problem solving and specific
strategic methods needed in order to enhance a
broader meaning to the purpose of the game.
