This paper presents the design and simulation of a low power voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) using a multiple pass loop architecture, achieving a tuning range of 2.17 GHz to 4.16 GHz at a power consumption of 3 mW. By employing a bulk drain connected PMOS load operating in the sub-threshold region, power consumption can be reduced significantly to 165 µW with a tuning range of 1.3 GHz to 2.6 GHz. The proposed VCO design is suitable for low power applications such as medical devices, maintaining a full swing output voltage at a 1.8 V power supply.
