Who are the people in the photograph?
Picture 1: There are four boys riding bicycles that seem to be raising the “heil Hitler” sign
Picture 2: These are what looks like American soldiers during a war, perhaps Vietnam, since the
picture is in color.
Picture 3: These people are factory or street workers.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
Picture 1: They are riding their bikes on what is probably a beautiful sunny day. They seem to be
newspaper boys as they have bag strapped to their backs that could hold a newspaper. They are
waving their hands in the air in a motion that seems to signify a “Heil Hitler.”
Picture 2: These men are soldiers: they are wearing soldier gear and have guns in the picture. They
see, to be happy as they are smiling and don’t look sad. They also seem to have a certain
“togetherness” quality within their group as they are placed together and have loose posture and are
sitting rather close.
Picture 3: They are pouring jugs of liquid, which I assume to be water, down the drains. They are
workers, judging from their hats, aprons, and clothing. Some are wearing business suits so some of
the men might be wealthy businessmen that are watching the show.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?

Picture 2:That being a soldier is a happy thing and can be fun.
Picture 3: That they water they are pouring out isn’t sanitary.
Why is this photograph important to history?
Picture 1: This photograph depicts the time of World War II, and perhaps the divide people felt on
whether or not to follow Hitler.
