Picture Analysis
Who are the people in the photograph? First picture are kids riding their bikes. Second picture are
military men. Third picture looks like business men and regular citizens.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this. First picture looks like the boys are German and it was during the reign of Hitler
because they have their hands saluting the way Hitler did. The second one looks like military men during
the WWII because their uniforms look to be from that era and the land atmosphere looks hot and some
of the men look tan and have their shirts off. The third picture looks like either business men or police
men dumping out moonshine and the bystanders are citizens that either like moonshine or are the ones
who made it because they do not look happy. It also looks like 1940’s in the US because of the brick
streets and the building.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey? In the first picture I think he was
showing that these boys in Germany at this time and place were with Hitler on his side because they
were doing the sign for Hitler by the way they were raising their arms in his honor. In the second picture
I believe it was conveying brotherhood during the war because even though these men were fighting
the war being all together in this picture they are smiling and they all are in close proximity to each
other. The third picture to me was showing that the business type men pouring out the liquid won the
right to dump this liquid but the other people in the picture were not happy about this because they
were not smiling instead they looked a little aggravated.
Why is this photograph important to history? The first photo shows how the youth might have been
influenced by Hitler’s Germany being as they were showing the sign for Hitler. In the second picture it
shows the closeness of these men during the war and some of these men might have been killed later
and having their picture might mean a lot to their family. The third picture shows the triumph over
bootleggers running moonshine and that by them dumping it out they are showing their power over
them.
What questions does this photograph raise? In the first picture the question I think of is how do these
boys think now is they are still living and how did the fall of Hitler affect them as men. In the second
picture I wonder how many men lost their lives that are photographed in this picture. The third picture
makes me wonder if the bootleggers got these other men back for dumping out their liquor.
Write your own caption for the photograph: Hale to Hitler! USA, USA!!! Did the police really when this
battle?
What could you do to find more information about this photograph? The first picture as well as the
others you can research the clothing and determine the actual decade the picture was taking in . You
could also research the buildings in the third picture.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1- The boys are for Hitler’s reign. They might be some kind of boy scout based on their uniforms.
They all look to be over 11 years old but under 18 years old.
2- These men look to be 18 years old or older. They look like they are in a hot climate because they
are tan and they have their shirts off. They look like soldiers because of their uniforms.
3- It looks like they are in a big city maybe New York based on the building and the brick streets
and big gutter. They look like they are celebrating something because they are dumping the liquid they
have big smiles on their faces. The other men do not look happy, the men not in suits, so that might
mean they are on the losing end of this celebration.
