Future-Focused: The Long Game in US Education
This document discusses the need to prepare students for an uncertain future impacted by emerging technologies. It outlines three key areas of focus: 1) developing a vision for how exponential technology changes will influence education, 2) shifting beliefs around learner-centered education, and 3) adopting a new leadership paradigm focused on learner agency, collaboration, and risk-taking. The goal is to help students develop skills and dispositions to create, live, and work successfully in the world they will help shape. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and sensors/IoT will significantly change teaching and learning in the next 5 years. Leaders must help others envision this future and guide the transition.

Learners want to learn. Focus on having the most effective learning. The system adapts to the unique learner. Effectiveness is achieved through customization. Each learner moves on their own path at an appropriate and adaptable pace. Every learner is exceptional. The uniqueness of learners is not a problem but, instead, something to build on. School-Centered Learning happens in schools. Education is done to the learner. Learners are known by how they compare to their class averages on standardized tests.
