This document summarizes the forms and uses of four future tenses in English: future simple, be going to, future continuous, and future perfect simple. The future simple uses will + verb to make predictions or describe future plans. Be going to uses am/is/are going to + verb to express future intentions or predictions based on present evidence. The future continuous uses will be + verb-ing to describe actions that will be in progress at a specific time in the future. Finally, the future perfect simple uses will have + past participle to refer to actions that will be completed before another time in the future.

FORM:

USES:
• A future prediction.
That man will become very famous.
• A spontaneous decision.
My car has broken down, so I will take the train.
• Future events in a timetable.
The tennis match will start at 5 o’clock.

3. BE GOING TO
FORM:
am / is / are + going to +
verbs
USES:
• A future plan.
Mark is going to study Maths next year.
• A prediction based on present evidence.
Be careful! You are going to fall!

4. BE GOING TO
TIME EXPRESSIONS:
Tomorrow, this evening, in an
hour, at 7 o’clock, later, next week /
month, soon, in a few minutes, in
the future, on 3rd June

5. FUTURE CONTINUOUS
FORM:
will + be + verbs
USES:
• An action in progress at a specific time
in the future.
In the next decades, many places will be
suffering from drought.

6. FUTURE CONTINUOUS
TIME EXPRESSIONS:
at this time, tomorrow, next…, on
Monday, in the next decade.

7. FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE
FORM:
will + have + past participle
USES:
• An action completed by a specific time
in the future.
By the end of the year, I will have done the
first-aid course.

8. FUTURE PERFECT SIMPLE
TIME EXPRESSIONS:
By this time next week, by 2
o’clock, by the end of…, by then,
by July, in five months.
