Vladimir Propp's narrative theory proposes that characters fall into seven types: hero, villain, donor, helper, victim, dispatcher, and false hero. Some characters may encompass multiple types. Tzventan Todorov's theory suggests that conventional narratives follow a five-stage structure: establishing equilibrium, disrupting equilibrium, recognizing the disruption, attempting to repair the disruption, and reinstating equilibrium. The document then provides examples of how these theories apply to the plot and teaser trailer of a horror film about teens entering an abandoned building.
2. Vladimir Propp’s Theory
Vladimir Propp’s Theory is that characters took on a role of narrative along
with seven different character types. The seven different types are a hero,
villain, donor, helper, victim, dispatcher and the false hero. Some characters
can appear to have more than one sphere character type.
3. Vladimir Propp’s Theory
The Hero – A common convention would be the Hero being male, but in
today’s society the media does usually tend to challenge this.
The Villian – The Villian is usually the creation of disruption.
The Donor – Assists the Hero with an item to restore the equilibrium.
The Helper – helps restore the narratives equilibrium
The Victim – character that is threatened or feared by the Villian who usually
needs rescuing from the Hero. This is very stereotypical as it is mostly a
female.
The Dispatcher - sends the hero on his mission or task.
The False Hero – appears to be the Hero but usually ends up being portrayed
as somewhat else at the end of the narrative.
4. Tzventan Todorovs Theory of
Narrative.
Todorov suggested that conventional narratives were structured in 5
particular stages.
1. A state of equilibrium at the outset
2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action
3. A recognition that there has been a disruption
4. An attempt to repair the disruption
5. A reinstatement of the equilibrium.
5. Narrative Structure Of Entire Film
Plot
1. Equilibrium – teens hanging out, entering a ‘NO ENTRY’ PARK/BUILDING
2. Glimpse of antagonist - this leads to the Disruption of equilibrium
3. Recognition of equilibrium - try to leave. Gate is locked
4. Try to repair equilibrium – by running away, try to survive - false hero is
killed by antagonist.
5. Reinstatement of equilibrium - teens are found dead. – Killer walks away.
6. Narrative Structure Of Teaser Trailer
1. Equilibrium – teens hanging out, entering a ‘NO ENTRY’ PARK/BUILDING
2. Glimpse of antagonist - this leads to the Disruption of equilibrium
3. Recognition of equilibrium - try to leave. Gate is locked
4. Try to repair equilibrium – by running away, try to survive - hand held
movements, running, panting, screams etc.
5. ‘ATTEMPT’ to Reinstatement of equilibrium - false hero is killed by
antagonist
