2. Centre of Visual Interest
(CVI) – The picture of Nicki
Minaj is very effective in that
it will attracting readers
attention. The denotation of
the reoccurring colour scheme
of pink, black and white. Her
fans call themselves ‘Barbz’
in reference to Barbie dolls as
this is what Nicki Minaj bases
a lot of her style on, due to
this the magazine has made
the colour scheme very much
pink based which has a lot of
feminine connotations and can
be easily referred to Barbie.
Negative Space – Area of the
page without text, image or
other elements. It is important
to allow for this space so that
the simplistic yet informative
nature of this article is upheld.
Masthead – The masthead is
the biggest most boldest
typography, this is because it is
the name of the artist the
interview is about, Nicki Minaj.
The pink has very feminine
connotations
Credit Given to
Photographer – This
gives readers the
opportunity to look up
more of the photographers
work if they like the CVI.
Drop Cap – This is a common
feature used in articles of this
nature in order to denote to the
reader where the main article
begins. It is in a different
colour to the rest of the main
body but the same colour as the
masthead, this shows that it is
demanding the same attention.

Pull Quote – this is a quote
pulled out of the
interview to attract the
readers attention to carry on
reading to find out the
meaning behind the quote.
The connotations of the
actual quote suggests that
Nicki Minaj has come to
some kind of realisation that
she does not need to be as
outrageous as she was
before… however fans that
follow her closely would
know that the statement is
used very loosely.
3. Masthead – It may be hard to decipher which is the masthead as they both are the largest fonts on the page, however in
my opinion I would say ‘Unfinished monkey business’ is the masthead because it is what titles the interview and stands
out in a black and a lower case rounded typography. This suggests a sense of relaxation, which is the vibe that one would
expect to get from a band such as Gorillaz.
Centre of Visual Interest
(CVI) – On this double page
spread the CVI is the version
of the band that they usually
go by – the cartoon version.
To long standing fans they
understand this but new fans
they may not understand the
meaning behind it. The initial
connotations of the cartoon
version is that the band is
childish and are hiding their
identity, however the truth is
that they set out to create a
virtual music project.
Colour Scheme - The colour scheme is red,
white and black; only the most important
features that need to stand out are in red.
Drop Cap -This is a
common feature used in
articles of this nature in
order to denote to the
reader where the main
article begins. It is in a
different colour to the
rest of the main body
but the same colour as
the masthead, this shows
that it is demanding the
same attention.
Negative space - Area of
the page without text, image
or other elements.

Pull Quote – The denotation of the pull quotes
being against the red background connotes that
they are important and are demanding attention.
Question & Answer Layout – I think that the
Q&A layout is very efficient because the
interviewer can ask certain questions to get the
most out of the interview to get the artists to say
what the reader want to read.
4. Drop Cap - This is a common feature used in articles of this nature in
order to denote to the reader where the main article begins. It is in a
different colour to the rest of the main body but the same colour as the
pull quote, this shows that it is demanding the same attention.
Masthead – The masthead
is clearly the name of the
band which connoted that
all undivided attention that
the reader would have on
the page should be flooded
with thoughts about The
Vaccines.
Centre of Visual
Interest (CVI) – The
denotation is that the
CVI is of the band The
Vaccines and takes up
more than one page. This
connotes that it is of high
importance and is worth
given attention to.
Pull Quote – The
pull quote is the
same colour as the
colour scheme but
with also a few of
the only words in
blue on the page.
Colour Scheme – The colour
scheme is clearly blue and
black with a background of
white. Blue typically has very
masculine connotations and
therefor is probably implying
that the band are also very
masculine.

other elements. It is important
to allow for this space so that
the simplistic yet informative
nature of this article is upheld.
This big red ‘J’ cannot go
unnoticed when looking
at this spread, it just
demands attention and it
most definitely receives
it. It supports the colour
scheme but also puts
emphasis on the fact that
it is all about Jay Z and
all attention must be one
him.
Centre of Visual Interest
(CVI) – The centre of visual
interest is Jay Z, wearing all
black and black sunglasses. This
connotes that he is of
importance because his eyes are
shielded from view. He also has
a red glow of light on him
coming from his left side, this
not only adheres to the colour
scheme of red, white and black
but also the red glow on him
may imply a dangerous side or
that we should be on the look
out for Jay Z in terms of his
music.
Further research into
‘RapRadar’ tells me that it
“is the Premiere Rap Blog for
the latest news, music and
video in Hip Hop Culture.” as
stated on their website. This
means that readers can get
the article on an online
format too which highly
appeals to the age range that
Jay Z makes music for.
Drop Cap – In this
case there are two drop
caps and it is the first
time I have
encountered such a
feature. I think it may
suggest to the readers
not to stop reading but
carry on to the next
part because Jay Z will
be talking about
something different.
Pull Quote – This pull quote tells us Jay Z is not afraid to speak his mind about what he thinks of
other artists but it is also an inspirational quote which would go down very well with the readers
whom are big fans of his. This would make them fall in love with the magazine and want to buy it
again as they probably have other interviews of artists from the same/similar genre.
