WHAT IS FURNITURE?
Furniture refers to movable objects intended to support various human activities
such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas), eating (tables), sleeping (e.g.,
beds) . Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as
horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), and to store
things (e.g., cupboards and shelves).
WHAT IS FURNITURE DESIGNING?
To design a piece of furniture is called furniture designing.
WHAT IS DESIGN?
Set of drawings done to show how an object looks and functions before it is made.
WHO IS A FURNITURE DESIGNER?
•A furniture designer is a professional that designs and creates different types of
furniture.
•Each piece of furniture that a furniture designer creates must serve few purposes
,like , it must be functional, practical (feasible), comfortable, and attractive.
•Every new furniture design starts with a basic concept, or idea. A furniture designer
then creates a drawing of this idea using traditional and modern methods. They will
often sketch their designs on paper first. Computer software can then later be used
to create a more intricate and detailed design.
•The design should include all different aspects, including how the piece is put
together and what materials are used to make it.
•Once a furniture designer finishes a design, he will then usually create an original
prototype of the piece.
•Some furniture designers simply create furniture designs that are meant to be mass
produced by large furniture manufacturers. Other furniture designers will work
closely with individuals to create custom pieces of furniture.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF FURNITURE IN INTERIOR DESIGN?
•Furniture matters the most when designing a space.
•It's important because interior design is concerned with the design of spaces and
what makes the space is furniture.
•Every furniture is made with user needs and function in mind.
•Function determines how a furniture should be, example for sleeping one would
need a bed , for seating a chair etc.
•Function determines what a space should be like.
•Analyzing how a space will be used and what activities will take place at that space
marks the programming phase of interior design where furniture is involved.
•Function determines which furniture and furnishings (appliances, fittings, and
accessories) are necessary for the usage of space.
•Hence furniture matters when the design is implemented as furniture brings
function to space.

Anthropometry refers to the measurement of the human body.
Ergonomics refers to the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.
Applying Ergonomics in design is the process of designing or arranging workplaces,
products and systems so that they fit the people who use them.
Most people have heard of ergonomics and think it is something to do with seating or
with the design of car controls and instruments – and it is… but it is so much more.
Ergonomics (or ‘human factors’ as it is referred to in North America) is a branch of
science that aims to learn about human abilities and limitations, and then apply this
learning to improve people’s interaction with products, systems and environments.
Ergonomics aims to improve workspaces and environments to minimise risk of injury
or harm.
Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be
accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people
regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.
“FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION” – SAID BY LOUIS SULLIVAN
“FORM AND FUNCTION ARE ONE” – SAID BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGTHT
“GOD IS IN THE DETAIL” ASSOCIATED MOSTLY WITH LUDWIG MIES VAN
DER ROHE
"God is in the detail" expresses the idea that whatever one does should be done
thoroughly; i.e. details are important.
“LESS IS MORE” - A PHRASE ADOPTED BY LUDWIG MIES VAN DER
ROHE AS A PRECEPT (rule) FOR MINIMALIST DESIGN AND
ARCHITECTURE.
That which is less complicated is often better understood and more appreciated
than what is more complicated.

Furniture design by Adeeba Afreen

  • 1. WHAT IS FURNITURE? Furniture refers to movable objects intended to support various human activities such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas), eating (tables), sleeping (e.g., beds) . Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), and to store things (e.g., cupboards and shelves). WHAT IS FURNITURE DESIGNING? To design a piece of furniture is called furniture designing. WHAT IS DESIGN? Set of drawings done to show how an object looks and functions before it is made.
  • 2. WHO IS A FURNITURE DESIGNER? •A furniture designer is a professional that designs and creates different types of furniture. •Each piece of furniture that a furniture designer creates must serve few purposes ,like , it must be functional, practical (feasible), comfortable, and attractive. •Every new furniture design starts with a basic concept, or idea. A furniture designer then creates a drawing of this idea using traditional and modern methods. They will often sketch their designs on paper first. Computer software can then later be used to create a more intricate and detailed design. •The design should include all different aspects, including how the piece is put together and what materials are used to make it. •Once a furniture designer finishes a design, he will then usually create an original prototype of the piece. •Some furniture designers simply create furniture designs that are meant to be mass produced by large furniture manufacturers. Other furniture designers will work closely with individuals to create custom pieces of furniture.
  • 3. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF FURNITURE IN INTERIOR DESIGN? •Furniture matters the most when designing a space. •It's important because interior design is concerned with the design of spaces and what makes the space is furniture. •Every furniture is made with user needs and function in mind. •Function determines how a furniture should be, example for sleeping one would need a bed , for seating a chair etc. •Function determines what a space should be like. •Analyzing how a space will be used and what activities will take place at that space marks the programming phase of interior design where furniture is involved. •Function determines which furniture and furnishings (appliances, fittings, and accessories) are necessary for the usage of space. •Hence furniture matters when the design is implemented as furniture brings function to space.

  • 6. Anthropometry refers to the measurement of the human body. Ergonomics refers to the study of people's efficiency in their working environment. Applying Ergonomics in design is the process of designing or arranging workplaces, products and systems so that they fit the people who use them. Most people have heard of ergonomics and think it is something to do with seating or with the design of car controls and instruments – and it is… but it is so much more. Ergonomics (or ‘human factors’ as it is referred to in North America) is a branch of science that aims to learn about human abilities and limitations, and then apply this learning to improve people’s interaction with products, systems and environments. Ergonomics aims to improve workspaces and environments to minimise risk of injury or harm. Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability or disability.
  • 7. “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION” – SAID BY LOUIS SULLIVAN “FORM AND FUNCTION ARE ONE” – SAID BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGTHT “GOD IS IN THE DETAIL” ASSOCIATED MOSTLY WITH LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE "God is in the detail" expresses the idea that whatever one does should be done thoroughly; i.e. details are important. “LESS IS MORE” - A PHRASE ADOPTED BY LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE AS A PRECEPT (rule) FOR MINIMALIST DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE. That which is less complicated is often better understood and more appreciated than what is more complicated.
