This document outlines the intended learning outcomes and topics to be covered for a course on fundamentals of the internet and new media. The course will cover identifying relevant internet technologies, evaluating new media scope and functions, analyzing SEO and online advertising effectiveness, leveraging social media as a marketing tool, and critiquing security, copyright and privacy issues. It defines the internet as a global network of interconnected computer networks using standardized protocols to share information. It distinguishes the internet, which connects computers, from the world wide web, which allows documents to be linked through hyperlinks using HTTP. It also briefly introduces Tim Berners-Lee as the inventor of the world wide web.

5. INTERNET VS THE WEB
 The Internet is a network of
connected computers. No company
owns the Internet
 it is a cooperative effort governed by
a system of standards and rules. The
purpose of connecting computers
together, of course, is to share
information.
 It is build with Protocols Like FTP and
others which helps pass information
between computers
 The World Wide Web (known
affectionately as “the Web”) is just one
of the ways information can be shared
over the Internet
 It is unique in that it allows documents
to be linked to one another using
hypertext links—thus forming a huge
“web” of connected information.
 The Web uses a protocol called HTTP
( HyperText Transfer Protocol).

Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee also known as TimBL, is an English
computer scientist, best known as the inventor of the World Wide Web.
He made a proposal for an information management system in March
1989, and he implemented the first successful communication between a
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet
sometime around mid-November of that same year.
