Plastic Maker Hubs aims at tackling the wicked and highly critical problem of plastic waste from the source. We believe the problem is rooted in miscalculated value: negative externalities are not priced in waste, waste pickers valuable work is not reflected in their income, and consumers do not have an opportunity to spend her money on a 'better' plastic. Our contribution to the solution is a series of small-scale hubs/workshops where waste-pickers convert plastic waste into a range of design products such as coasters, notebooks, wall clocks, furniture etc. These products embed principles of fair trade & circular economy, tapping into a huge global market of conscious consumers, both B2B and B2C. We aim at an holistic upliftment of the waste-pickers' communities & livelihoods, in terms of more income, dignified work and status.
Innovate UK (UKRI) and the Knowledge Transfer Network are hosting a briefing event for the first two competitions of the Smart Sustainable Plastics Packaging Challenge:

As part of the Clean Growth Grand Challenge within the Government’s Industrial Strategy, a £60m Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge was announced in Summer 2019 which is expected to be matched by funding of up to £149 million from industry.
The challenge will deliver strategic leadership and a co-ordinated programme of research and innovation for the design, production, supply, recovery and recycling of plastic packaging across the entire value chain.Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £36 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme to fund late-stage demonstrator projects for solutions to create a more circular economy for plastic packaging. Projects must show how they will deliver a more circular plastics packaging supply chain and deliver the targets of the UK Plastics Pact, projects should also include significant industry investment.
This funding will be divided between three rounds, this briefing is for Round 1 which will invest up to £12 million. In addition, Innovate UK will invest up to £750,000 in feasibility studies to develop proposals for the later rounds.
Demonstrators are welcome that trial smart and sustainable packaging innovation across 4 areas at scale:
- Materials
- Design
- Technology or process
- Business model or behaviour change
Demonstrator projects should improve on the current state-of-the-art in plastic packaging, while still demonstrating practical and close-to-market solutions.

SOURCING
• Thammasat University’s Recycle Bank passes 90% of its
recycling income on to informal recyclers that sell
materials to the bank.
• Ex: If the Recycle Bank receives 10 Baht/kg for PET, it pays 9
Baht/kg to the informal recyclers.
• Our project would create a new grade of plastic at the TU
Recycle Bank (clear/clean PET) and pay a higher rate for
this material.
• This would raise incomes for informal recycling workers.
• The clean, clear PET would simplify processing and enabling
us to offer a high-quality filament with consistent coloring.

• The Thammasat U. team will create a social enterprise
that will develop the 3D printing filament value chain.
• Plastic received from the informal recycling collectors will
be washed and processed into flakes in a lab on campus.
• Flakes will be delivered to Covestro for blending and

• Covestro will deliver pellets to the lab for filament
extrusion.
