Three critical delays - seeking care, transportation, and receiving care - lead to 75% of maternal deaths from preventable complications in Uganda. Fuel For Life addresses these delays through a mobile network voucher system that provides free and efficient dispatch and reimbursement for emergency obstetric transport. The system utilizes existing drivers and vehicles to rapidly connect pregnant women in labor to hospitals, transmit clinical information, and compensate drivers, with the goal of reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates in rural Uganda. Implementation of paper vouchers previously increased skilled deliveries, but Fuel For Life aims to create a more sustainable electronic solution that is faster, scalable, and can integrate additional features like mobile health records and partographs to further improve outcomes.
