Unit Goal
To introduce students to the basic skills and techniques involved in playing
frisbee.
Name: Zach Foose Date: 3/7/2014
Unit Objectives Psychomotor: SWBAT physically perform Frisbee skills at a basic
beginner’s level (Forehand throw, Backhand throw, Hammer Throw,
Clap catch, 2 handed rim grab, 1 handed rim grab, Offensive and
Defensive skills) with 70% accuracy on a application test.
Cognitive: SWBAT understand how to perform the skills and know the
rules of Frisbee with 70% accuracy as assessed by cognitive quizzes.
Affective: SWBAT incorporate team strategy and concepts into
application tasks and game-play. SWBAT participate in Frisbee as a
recreational activity with competency and enjoyment. SWBAT be
competent, literate, and enthusiastic about the game of ultimate frisbee.

follow the sport education model, working as a team within roles (coach,
fitness trainer, equipment manager, etc.) to earn daily team points
(wearing the right color, attendance, knowing your roles, etc.).
Health-Related Fitness: SWBAT increase their cardiovascular
endurance, flexibility, and strength through daily fitness activities, game
play, and practice. Students will be engaged in vigorous activity during
game play which will help them to achieve over 50% of MVPA during
every lesson. During fitness training students will achieve 80% MVPA.
Students will participate in a fitness challenge towards the end of the
semester/unit.
frisbeeunitplanrevised-140605090554-phpapp02.doc: Frisbee
Content Outline Motor Skills:
Backhand Throw
Forehand Throw
Hammer Throw
Critical Elements:
Grip:
Fingers Curled under Disk
thumb on top (Disk Parallel
with arm);Staggered stance
sided to your target
Cock wrist back; Rotate waist
bringing Frisbee back to
waist (to generate velocity)
transfer weight from back
foot to your front foot; extend
arm out point towards target
snapping wrist at the end
Grip:
Thumb on top, Index and
Middle finger extended out
under the Frisbee; Knees
slightly bent and feet towards
the receiver, Shift weight to
throwing side, When bringing
disk back keep elbow pointed
to target (keeping disk level
while bringing forward),
Extend arm forward while
rotating trunk forward, Snap
wrist when releasing and
keep hand pointed at
receiver (palm should be
facing the sky).
Grip: Same as Forehand
Throw (Thumb on top, Index
and Middle finger extended
out under the Frisbee. Knees
slightly bent and feet towards
the receiver); Similar to an
Volleyball Overhand serve:
Start with disk at side (as if
going to forearm throw it),
Move the disc above your
head holding the disc
vertically, when disc is 45
degrees from ground (over
head) release the disc, Right
leg is out to the back of you,
Weight should be on right leg
(or opposite if faking a left
forearm throw), as bringing
disc up and over your head,
weight should be transferring
to left. After weight is
transferred, right leg may
come forward to balance.
Instructional Cues:
Staggered stance
Face target
Bring Frisbee back
Transfer weight forward
Extend arm forward
Snap wrist and release
staggered Stance
Shift weight to throwing side
Keep elbow pointed to target
Rotate and extend arm
forward
Release pointing at target
and palm facing up
Fake Forearm throw
Bring Disc over head
(holding disc Vertically)
Transfer weight from right to
left
At 45 Degrees release high
Motor Skills:
Clap Catch
2 Handed Rim Grab/ 1
Handed Rim Grab
Pivoting
Faking
Dump & Swing
Critical Elements:
As Frisbee is coming in at
chest level, Square Chest to
the Frisbee, Look Frisbee in
with eyes, place one hand on
top of Frisbee, while
simultaneously bring free
hand up to catch under the
Frisbee (Sandwiching the
Frisbee with your hands)
If the disk isn’t coming
straight at you, Aim to grasp
the disk with your 4 fingers
on top and thumb on the
bottom (Crab Grasp), If
Frisbee is coming low, rotate
hand so fingers are on
bottom and thumb is on top.
When a receiver catches, he
or she must establish a pivot
foot. The receiver must keep
a part of one foot in contact
with a spot on the ground,
while his or her other foot is
allowed to move freely.
When being covered, Pump
fake the throw (fake to one
area), break eye contact with
receiver, pivot to an area that
isn’t covered as well against
the defender, and release
quickly (preferably using the
hammer throw)
The thrower gives a short
pass to a teammate and
immediately “goes” to get
open for a return swing pass
Instructional Cues:
Square body up
Look into hands
Clap on to the Frisbee (Top
and Bottom)
Locate Frisbee
Look Frisbee into hand
Grasp with Crab Grasp
Catch Frisbee
Plant one foot
Break eye contact
Fake one way
Pivot another way and throw
Players will play against Man
to man Defense
Practice running the Dump &
Swing

Motor Skills:
Buttonhook Cut
Counter-Break Cut
Defensive Position
Covering a Cutter/ Triangle
Position
Straight Up Mark/ Jamming a
receiver
Force Forehand Throw/ Back
hand throw
Critical Elements:
Offensive player will run
towards endzone then
change direction and head
back towards the thrower. Or
the offensive player can run
towards thrower than cut the
opposite direction towards
the endzone
An offensive player breaks
deep for a corner of the end
zone then cuts to the other
corner of the end zone.
Defender keeps a low center
of gravity, Knees slightly
bent, Back straight up, feet
shoulder with apart, Defender
should be light on the back of
their feet, so they are ready
to backpedal and change
direction quickly
Defensive Position, Have
vision on both receiver and
thrower (Being between both
of them), Sets up in Force
Lane Passing Side, Back
Pedals with receiver, when
thrower throws, Defender
makes move for the Frisbee
The Defender (Mark) jams
the receiver, trying to
eliminate him from going
deep. Defender allows
receiver to get short throws.
Defender defends the
forehand side of a receiver or
the backhand side of a
receiver. Similar to straight
up mark, but jamming the
receiver to one side rather
than playing them evenly.
Instructional Cues:
Player sprints one way then
changes direction
Receiver will run one
direction then cut to lose
defender
Thrower will lead the Frisbee
soon after the receiver
changes direction
Torso and head straight up
Knees Slightly bent

Instructional
Strategy Sport Education Model - SCARRF Principle
S – Seasons- Teams will participate in daily team practices that will lead
up to the daily application challenges. Working together as a team
throughout the season will earn you points for the day, which goes
towards your season standings in the class. Teammates will need to
motivate each other to be present, on time, and wearing the correct
clothes to participate.
C- Competition- Every day teams will participate in an application
challenge. The application challenge is something different each time
depending on what the focus of that teams practice is that particular day.
Daily team points are earned in the competition, which goes towards
your season standings in the class. Players/Students get the
opportunity to practice and showcase their individual skills to the teacher
then have an opportunity to apply those skills in team competitions.
A- Affiliation – Daily team points come from a couple different daily
tasks some of which have a lot to do with affiliation, such as wearing
your correct team shirt color and showing up for class on time. Affiliation
helps teams to keep their players/students in check. It is a motivational
tool that allows the students to manage their own behaviors which can
help provide a better, overall, experience to/for the whole class.
R- Roles- Every week students on each team will be assigned a certain
role for their team. The roles include a team coach, head fitness trainer,
equipment manager, and daily statistician. Roles provide an opportunity
to develop an understanding and appreciations for everything
encompassing the sport itself. It develops both leadership and following
skills which are essential and translate to all group/team concepts.
R- Record Keeping- Teams will have to report their raw scores from
their application tasks and their daily team points to the instructor who
tallies them up throughout the season. Teams are responsible for
keeping track of their points to prevent any errors in points. Recording
Keeping promotes competition which gives reason to why the students
are competing in the first. Better scores equal better grades, which
places the task of motivating to the students/teams on themselves.
F- Festivities- Teams will participate in a culminating playoff style
tournament; This is what the class is ultimately leading up to. Teams
will be seeded based on their team records. Competition will include
both a winners and losers bracket to determine 1st
though 4th
place.
frisbeeunitplanrevised-140605090554-phpapp02.doc: Frisbee
Assessment
Procedures
Students will be assessed on their skills through a combine. This will
create equal teams for the semester.
Each team will be awarded points for attendance, wearing their team
color, and for daily participation (knowing their roles). *Daily Team
Points Bonus
Daily Quizzes will be administered at the beginning of each class,
content of quizzes come from assigned readings.
Daily application points will be accumulated throughout the season
based on their performance in their daily application tasks.
Teams will be seeded in the tournament based on their daily application
points.
Final fitness combine will be assigned.
60% App Tasks, describe 10 app tasks at 6 worth a max of 6 points
each.

Instructional Strategy Sport EducationModel - SCARRF Principle S – Seasons- Teams will participate in daily team practices that will lead up to the daily application challenges. Working together as a team throughout the season will earn you points for the day, which goes towards your season standings in the class. Teammates will need to motivate each other to be present, on time, and wearing the correct clothes to participate. C- Competition- Every day teams will participate in an application challenge. The application challenge is something different each time depending on what the focus of that teams practice is that particular day. Daily team points are earned in the competition, which goes towards your season standings in the class. Players/Students get the opportunity to practice and showcase their individual skills to the teacher then have an opportunity to apply those skills in team competitions. A- Affiliation – Daily team points come from a couple different daily tasks some of which have a lot to do with affiliation, such as wearing your correct team shirt color and showing up for class on time. Affiliation helps teams to keep their players/students in check. It is a motivational tool that allows the students to manage their own behaviors which can help provide a better, overall, experience to/for the whole class. R- Roles- Every week students on each team will be assigned a certain role for their team. The roles include a team coach, head fitness trainer, equipment manager, and daily statistician. Roles provide an opportunity to develop an understanding and appreciations for everything encompassing the sport itself. It develops both leadership and following skills which are essential and translate to all group/team concepts. R- Record Keeping- Teams will have to report their raw scores from their application tasks and their daily team points to the instructor who tallies them up throughout the season. Teams are responsible for keeping track of their points to prevent any errors in points. Recording Keeping promotes competition which gives reason to why the students are competing in the first. Better scores equal better grades, which places the task of motivating to the students/teams on themselves. F- Festivities- Teams will participate in a culminating playoff style tournament; This is what the class is ultimately leading up to. Teams will be seeded based on their team records. Competition will include both a winners and losers bracket to determine 1st though 4th place.
