❑ Points to be kept in mind while construction of a new Broiler Farm
✓ Selection of Site/ Location of Broiler Farm
✓ Layout and Design of Broiler Sheds
✓ Relative Humidity
✓ Temperature
✓ Ventilation
Broiler Shed Construction: An Overview
❑ Selection of Site/Location of Broiler Farm: CPCB, GOI Guidelines, 2021
✓Should be on an even and elevated land.
✓500 m away from residential zone in order to avoid nuisance due to unpleasant odour
& flies.
✓100 m from major water course like River, Lakes, canals and drinking water source
like wells to avoid contamination
✓100 m from national Highway (NH) and 50 m from State Highway (SH)
✓10-15 m from rural roads/internal roads/village pagdandis.
✓The Poultry sheds should not be located within 10 m from farm boundary for
cross ventilation and odour dispersion.
Broiler Shed Construction: An Overview
❑ Selection of Site/Location of Broiler Farm: CPCB, GOI Guidelines, 2021
✓SPCBs/PCCs shall upload Environmental Guidelines on their website.
✓Poultry Farms handling birds above 25,000 at single location will have to obtain
consent to establish (CTE) and consent for operate (CTO) under the Water Act, 1974
& Air Act 1981 from State Pollution Control Board/Pollution Control Committee.
✓The Poultry Farms are categorized under “Green” Category, therefore validity of
consent will be 15 yrs.
✓Animal Husbandry Dept. of the State/Districts to assist the poultry farms for
implementation of Guidelines.
Layout and Design of Broiler Sheds
1. Long axis should be East To West
and width extending North-South.
2. Foundation: Solid concrete blocks and bricks with 1.5 to 2 feet below the surface
and 1-1.5 feet above the ground level.
3. Floor: A cement concrete floor about 1-1.5 feet above ground will eliminate disease
problems and help in easy cleaning and disinfection and reduce problems due to
rodents, snakes & diseases. Floor must be flat concrete with slope towards door for
easy cleaning.
Layout and Design of Broiler Sheds
4. Width: Should not be > 30 feet. If the width of the shed is > 30 feet, it can cause
ventilation issues. But you can increase the width in EC sheds up to 40 feet. There
is no limit for length of broiler shed.
5. Size: Size of shed depends upon the no. of broiler birds to be raised as each broiler
requires 1 sqf of floor space.
6. Roof: Roof height at center should 12-14 feet and 6-7 feet on the side walls with an
overhang extended 3 feet beyond wall to prevent rainwater from entering sheds.
7. Doors: Single door is considered best. The door must open outside in deep-litter
broiler sheds. The size of door is preferably 6 x 4 feet. There should be a foot-bath
with disinfectant at the main entrance of the Poultry farm, instead of at the entrance
of the sheds.

9. Water tank: must be of large capacity preferably 1000 L per 5000 birds.
10. Lighting: Light should be provided at 7-8 ft above floor hanged from ceiling. In
case of incandescent bulbs distance should be 10 ft between two bulbs whereas if
Tube lights are used then distance should be 15 ft.
11. Drinkers:
1) Automatic Bell drinkers: 25-30 per 1000 broilers birds and max distance
between a drinker and bird should not be more than 2 mt. Drinker height should
be adjusted to neck region of bird.
2) Nipple drinkers: 1 per 10 broiler birds max distance between a nipple drinker
and bird should not be more than 4 mt. Nipple drinkers provide better water
quality have low maintenance and result in dry litter due to less water spillage.

12. Feeders:
1) Automatic Pan feeders: 75-100 broilers birds per
Pan feeder.
2) Broiler Feeder: 16-18 per 1000 broilers birds.
3) Chick feeder: 50 per 1000 broilers chicks.
