2. Introduction
In this short but informative presentation we have
gathered key details and info about the french pantheon
3. Origin and History
The Pantheon is located in the Latin Quarter of Paris and over the years has become a
famous burial place with many famous and influential people having been entombed here,
but it is far more than that, as it was one of the most important architectural achievements of
its time and is one of the great neoclassical monuments in Paris today.
4. Purpose or Meaning
Panthéon Paris meant the “Temple of all the Gods” and was initially built as a
church dedicated to St. Genevieve. The primary purpose of constructing this
building was to keep the reliquary Chasse containing the remains of the most
honored saint of those times. But unfortunately, it changed to a secular
mausoleum and now houses the remains of prominent French citizens.
5. Architecture
Panthéon, building in Paris that was begun about 1757 by the architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot
as the Church of Sainte-Geneviève to replace a much older church of that name on the same site. It
was secularized during the French Revolution and dedicated to the memory of great Frenchmen,
receiving the name Panthéon.
6. Poem
If Rome is built on seven hills and New York points several pencils at heaven
Paris is slow in taking up the cue
The houses, trees and monuments it leavens
To leaning towers are far between and few
Most of the high spots elevate the churches
Which of the Eiffel tower and arc of Triumph are not
But only they sit on lonely perches
If the Eiffel tower you wish wash and starch
A filigree with giant tweezers
Mine will be bigger and better he said of the arch of triumph when Napoleon looked at Caesar's, while in
the pantheon the funerals march
7. Overview/Conclusion
The french pantheon is a interesting and mysterious building with a good deal of
history and you should take a look at it yourself
