College 25 EXECUTION. De plannen kunnen nog zo goed zijn, uiteindelijk is de uitvoering bepalend. Desondanks is operational excellence een modewoord, dat – zoals dat gaat met mode – al weer aan slijtage onderhevig is. Wie het college over execution bijwoonde zal dat volmondig beamen.
Lector Digital World Frans van der Reep nam zijn publiek mee op een vliegreis naar Kaapstad, overigens zonder er daadwerkelijk te landen. Hij vroeg het publiek wat het eerste land zou zijn dat het vliegtuig in zuidelijke richting zou passeren na Zuid-Afrika. Her en der werd Australië geopperd, maar het goede antwoord (omgeving Beringstraat) zat er niet tussen. Voor Van der Reep een illustratie dat mensen op een bepaalde, enigszins vastgeroeste, manier naar de wereld kijken. Mensen moeten te veel, maar weten vaak niet meer precies waarom. Het doel is onduidelijk en de weg ernaartoe vaak ook niet al te helder. Vaak het moment om dure consultants in te huren, een reorganisatie te overwegen of tot grote ingrepen te komen op IT-gebied. Kan allemaal nuttig zijn, maar Van der Reep is pleitbezorger van meer oog voor de menselijke factor. Medewerkers van een bedrijf weten vaak beter dan het management hoe de uitvoering beter kan.
