WHAT IS FOSS?
• FOSS- Free Open Source Software
• FOSS programs are those that have licenses that allow users to
freely run the program for any purpose, modify the program as
they want, and also to freely distribute copies of either the
original version or their own modified version.
• One major reason for the growth and use of FOSS technology is
because users have access to the source so it is much easier to
fix faults and improve the applications. In combination with the
open license, this simplifies the development process for many
enterprises and gives them flexibility that simply isn't available
within the confines of a proprietary or commercial product.

WHAT IS PROPRIETY SOFTWARE?
• Proprietary software is software that is owned by an individual
or a company (usually the one that developed it). There are
almost always major restrictions on its use, and its source code
is almost always kept secret. Refers to any computer software
that has restrictions on any combination of the usage,
modification, copying or distributing modified versions of the
software. Proprietary software usually can be distributed at no
cost or for a fee. That's why Proprietary software may also be
called closed-source software.
• The term proprietary is derived from the Latin word proprietas
meaning property.

WHAT IS A SPREADSHEET?
• A spreadsheet is a document which is divided into rows and
columns to record such things as items in inventory, income
and expenses, debits and credits.
• Spreadsheets are designed to ease the management of
numbers and calculations. They calculate totals, averages,
percentages, budgets, and complex financial and scientific
formulas etc.
(A Example for Spreadsheet)
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 4
FEATURES OF SPREADSHEET.
 Visual Design
Most people process data most easily when it is presented
visually, rather than simply existing as a set of hypothetical
numbers in the mind. Spreadsheets allow you to lay figures out
on a grid, calculating and manipulating them visually.
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 5
 Automatic Calculations
Spreadsheet software gives you the ability to enter
mathematical formulas ranging from simple arithmetic to
complex statistics. This is done in a simple and intuitive manner;
to perform a calculation with two different cells on the
spreadsheet.
 Dynamic Updates
In addition to the standard method of entering data in a
spreadsheet -- typing numbers in cells -- you can also create a
cell with a value generated dynamically based on other cells.
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 6
 Data Analysis
Spreadsheet software gives you the ability to analyze your
data in ways other than simply looking at grids and lines. Most
spreadsheet software can automatically create graphs and charts
from your data, giving you different ways of comparing and
analyzing information.
 In Addition There are Lots of Features in
Spreadsheets.
 Selecting or filling ranges without the screen moving.
 Perform any math action on a range of cells.
 Insert Sticky Notes anywhere in your worksheets for quick
reminders.
 Adding any feature you want to the Quick Access Toolbar.
 The Favorite Directories feature and Bookmark feature.
 The Hide and Un-Hide Sheets feature.
 The Save or Close Multiple Files features.
 The special pivot table features found under the Data Menu.
 The set print area and titles features.
 The rename or delete the active file features. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 7
WHAT IS A WORD PROCESSOR?
• Sometimes abbreviated as WP, a word processor is a software
program capable of creating, storing, and printing typed
documents. Today, the word processor is one of the most
frequently used software programs on a computer, with
Microsoft Word being the most popular word processor.
• Word processors can be used to create multiple types of files,
including Text files (.txt), Rich Text files (.rtf), HTML files (.htm
& .html), and Word files (.doc & .docx). Some word processors
can also be used to create XML files (.xml).
(A Example for Word Processor Document)
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 8
FEATURES OF WORD PROCESSOR.
 Text formatting
 Changing the font, font size, font color, bold, italicizing, etc.
Multimedia
 Insert clip art, charts, images, pictures, and video into a
document.
Spelling and Grammar
 Have the ability to look for spelling and grammar errors in a
document.
Adjust the layout
 Capable of modifying the margins and layout of a document.
Indentation and lists
 Set and format tabs, bullet lists, and number lists.
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 9
Insert tables
 Add tables to a document.
Header and footer
 Being able to adjust and change text within the header and footer of a
document.
Thesaurus
 Look up alternatives to a word without leaving the program.
Auto Correct
 Automatically correct common errors (e.g. typing "teh" and having it
autocorrected to "the").
Mailers and labels
 Create mailers or print labels.
Import data
 Import and format data from CSV, database, or another source.
Macros
 Setup macros to perform common tasks. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 10
WHAT IS A PRESENTATION PROGRAM?
• A presentation program is a software program that helps create
a slideshow that addresses a topic. Presentation programs can
be used in businesses and schools for discussing a topic or for
teaching. Many times, the presenter uses a projector to project
the slideshow up on to screen that everyone can see. Below is
an example of Microsoft Power Point, a commonly used
program that creates presentations.
(A Example for Presentation)
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 11
FEATURES OF PRESENTATION
PROGRAM.
 Ready Prepared Templates.
 Numbers of Mind Blowing Layouts.
 Numbers of Ideas, Information Can be Present With One Image.
 Mind Blowing Animation Effects.
 Lots of Information Can be Abbreviate With Flow Charts, Diagrams
etc.
 Easy to Customize.
 Allows Text to be Inserted & Formatted.

PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091
15
• The core software is free, when
costs become major factor using
open sources software you can
really cut down on your business
cost.
• Because there are thousands of
programmers that are involved in
the development of open sources of
open sources software it allows
rapid implementation of features
and security fixes of open sources
software.
• Everyone has the right to modify
and tweak with the code to meet
their needs.
• Because it is a paid software it is a
guarantee that you will get the
technical help or support needed
for the software.
• You can experiment with this type
of software in the form of freeware,
shareware, demo ware, trial ware
before you can purchased the
software.
FOSS VS PROPRIETY
SOFTWARE(DISADVANTAGES)FREE OPEN SOURCE
SOFTWARE
PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE
6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091
16
• Some company pay developers to
develop software and therefore
development is pretty much
guaranteed.
• A large disadvantage to open
source software is that as so many
developments are going on at the
same time it is hard to keep track
of which version is the most up to
date.
• Many open source projects are
developed from many different
peoples codes and this can make it
a struggle to effectively sort out
who's is who's.
• License cost of commercial
software is very expensive
compare to the implementation
cost.
• Because there are less
developers compare to open
source, Technical support is less
and features and fixes take
more time to be solves
• Because the sources code are
hidden you cannot modify the
software to meet your needs

  • 3. WHAT IS FOSS? • FOSS- Free Open Source Software • FOSS programs are those that have licenses that allow users to freely run the program for any purpose, modify the program as they want, and also to freely distribute copies of either the original version or their own modified version. • One major reason for the growth and use of FOSS technology is because users have access to the source so it is much easier to fix faults and improve the applications. In combination with the open license, this simplifies the development process for many enterprises and gives them flexibility that simply isn't available within the confines of a proprietary or commercial product. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 1
  • 4. WHAT IS PROPRIETY SOFTWARE? • Proprietary software is software that is owned by an individual or a company (usually the one that developed it). There are almost always major restrictions on its use, and its source code is almost always kept secret. Refers to any computer software that has restrictions on any combination of the usage, modification, copying or distributing modified versions of the software. Proprietary software usually can be distributed at no cost or for a fee. That's why Proprietary software may also be called closed-source software. • The term proprietary is derived from the Latin word proprietas meaning property. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 2

  • 6. WHAT IS A SPREADSHEET? • A spreadsheet is a document which is divided into rows and columns to record such things as items in inventory, income and expenses, debits and credits. • Spreadsheets are designed to ease the management of numbers and calculations. They calculate totals, averages, percentages, budgets, and complex financial and scientific formulas etc. (A Example for Spreadsheet) 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 4
  • 7. FEATURES OF SPREADSHEET.  Visual Design Most people process data most easily when it is presented visually, rather than simply existing as a set of hypothetical numbers in the mind. Spreadsheets allow you to lay figures out on a grid, calculating and manipulating them visually. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 5  Automatic Calculations Spreadsheet software gives you the ability to enter mathematical formulas ranging from simple arithmetic to complex statistics. This is done in a simple and intuitive manner; to perform a calculation with two different cells on the spreadsheet.
  • 8.  Dynamic Updates In addition to the standard method of entering data in a spreadsheet -- typing numbers in cells -- you can also create a cell with a value generated dynamically based on other cells. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 6  Data Analysis Spreadsheet software gives you the ability to analyze your data in ways other than simply looking at grids and lines. Most spreadsheet software can automatically create graphs and charts from your data, giving you different ways of comparing and analyzing information.
  • 9.  In Addition There are Lots of Features in Spreadsheets.  Selecting or filling ranges without the screen moving.  Perform any math action on a range of cells.  Insert Sticky Notes anywhere in your worksheets for quick reminders.
  • 10. WHAT IS A WORD PROCESSOR? • Sometimes abbreviated as WP, a word processor is a software program capable of creating, storing, and printing typed documents. Today, the word processor is one of the most frequently used software programs on a computer, with Microsoft Word being the most popular word processor. • Word processors can be used to create multiple types of files, including Text files (.txt), Rich Text files (.rtf), HTML files (.htm & .html), and Word files (.doc & .docx). Some word processors can also be used to create XML files (.xml). (A Example for Word Processor Document) 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 8
  • 11. FEATURES OF WORD PROCESSOR.  Text formatting  Changing the font, font size, font color, bold, italicizing, etc. Multimedia  Insert clip art, charts, images, pictures, and video into a document. Spelling and Grammar  Have the ability to look for spelling and grammar errors in a document. Adjust the layout  Capable of modifying the margins and layout of a document. Indentation and lists  Set and format tabs, bullet lists, and number lists. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 9
  • 12. Insert tables  Add tables to a document. Header and footer  Being able to adjust and change text within the header and footer of a document. Thesaurus  Look up alternatives to a word without leaving the program. Auto Correct  Automatically correct common errors (e.g. typing "teh" and having it autocorrected to "the"). Mailers and labels  Create mailers or print labels. Import data  Import and format data from CSV, database, or another source. Macros  Setup macros to perform common tasks. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 10
  • 13. WHAT IS A PRESENTATION PROGRAM? • A presentation program is a software program that helps create a slideshow that addresses a topic. Presentation programs can be used in businesses and schools for discussing a topic or for teaching. Many times, the presenter uses a projector to project the slideshow up on to screen that everyone can see. Below is an example of Microsoft Power Point, a commonly used program that creates presentations. (A Example for Presentation) 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 11
  • 14. FEATURES OF PRESENTATION PROGRAM.  Ready Prepared Templates.  Numbers of Mind Blowing Layouts.  Numbers of Ideas, Information Can be Present With One Image.  Mind Blowing Animation Effects.  Lots of Information Can be Abbreviate With Flow Charts, Diagrams etc.  Easy to Customize.  Allows Text to be Inserted & Formatted.  Insert Slide Feature.  Deletion of Inserted Slides. Allows cut and paste Slides in Any Oder.  Allows animations and/or sounds manipulations. 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 12

  • 17. FOSS VS PROPRIETY SOFTWARE(ADVANTAGES)FREE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 15 • The core software is free, when costs become major factor using open sources software you can really cut down on your business cost. • Because there are thousands of programmers that are involved in the development of open sources of open sources software it allows rapid implementation of features and security fixes of open sources software. • Everyone has the right to modify and tweak with the code to meet their needs. • Because it is a paid software it is a guarantee that you will get the technical help or support needed for the software. • You can experiment with this type of software in the form of freeware, shareware, demo ware, trial ware before you can purchased the software.
  • 18. FOSS VS PROPRIETY SOFTWARE(DISADVANTAGES)FREE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE 6/6/2017ITE 1901 E1641091 16 • Some company pay developers to develop software and therefore development is pretty much guaranteed. • A large disadvantage to open source software is that as so many developments are going on at the same time it is hard to keep track of which version is the most up to date. • Many open source projects are developed from many different peoples codes and this can make it a struggle to effectively sort out who's is who's. • License cost of commercial software is very expensive compare to the implementation cost. • Because there are less developers compare to open source, Technical support is less and features and fixes take more time to be solves • Because the sources code are hidden you cannot modify the software to meet your needs
